Agency Performance – Report on Operations<br />
Directorate Reports<br />
Corporate and Commercial Development Directorate continued<br />
<strong>The</strong> App helps visitors plan their day at the Zoo,<br />
allowing them to set reminders for the various<br />
on-site activities including keeper talks and<br />
guided walks. This new interactive experience<br />
allows visitors to easily find their way around<br />
the grounds and locate specific facilities and<br />
species. By the end <strong>of</strong> June 2012, there had<br />
been over 10,000 downloads <strong>of</strong> the App.<br />
Events<br />
<strong>The</strong> 2011-12 event season included:<br />
• Five daytime events starting in November<br />
2011 with Grandparents Day (supported<br />
by the Department for Communities) and<br />
Brownes Numbat Club Day, then Asian<br />
Elephant Tricia’s 55th birthday in January<br />
2012, and the annual Perth Zoo Teddy Bear’s<br />
Picnic and the IGA Easter Treasure Hunt in<br />
March. <strong>The</strong>se events attracted 15,187 visitors.<br />
• Streets Happy Zoo Year, a family-friendly<br />
New Year’s Eve concert, was a sell out<br />
event again.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> summer Nocturnal Concerts at the Zoo<br />
series, staged by Zaccaria Events Presents,<br />
featured Rockwiz and Jimmy Barnes and<br />
attracted 7,087 patrons.<br />
• A high energy children’s concert featuring<br />
the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n Symphony Orchestra<br />
with Jay Laga’aia sold out with over<br />
4,000 patrons.<br />
Zoo Shop, Functions and Close Encounters<br />
<strong>The</strong> Zoo shop, Zoonique, recorded a 10.1%<br />
increase in sales and 35% increase in net pr<strong>of</strong>it.<br />
Closer management <strong>of</strong> stock levels and analysis<br />
<strong>of</strong> stock performance to better understand<br />
consumer behaviour was a focus during the<br />
year. Sales <strong>of</strong> fundraising items, including<br />
elephant art, coins and calendars, generated<br />
$35,000 for the Zoo’s fundraising program,<br />
Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA).<br />
<strong>The</strong> catering dividend from the Zoo’s cafes and<br />
functions increased by 1.3% over last year but<br />
revenue from venue hire for externally managed<br />
concerts was down as a result <strong>of</strong> fewer concerts<br />
held over the summer season.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Close Encounters behind the scenes<br />
visitor tour program recorded reduced revenue<br />
returns but still contributed over $10,000 to<br />
our Wildlife Conservation Action program. <strong>The</strong><br />
price, availability, variety and accessibility <strong>of</strong><br />
the experiences <strong>of</strong>fered under this program<br />
were reviewed during the year. A new Close<br />
Encounters program will be rolled out in 2012‐13<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering a wider variety <strong>of</strong> behind the scenes<br />
experiences with different price points.<br />
Corporate Sponsorships and Fundraising<br />
<strong>The</strong> 2012 Conservation Calendar, featuring<br />
conservation messages and information and<br />
images <strong>of</strong> Perth Zoo’s native and exotic species,<br />
was again sponsored by Water Corporation,<br />
<strong>The</strong> Sunday Times newspaper and IGA.<br />
Released in late 2011, sale <strong>of</strong> the calendar raised<br />
over $85,000 for WCA. <strong>The</strong> significant growth<br />
in the financial contribution <strong>of</strong> the calendar in<br />
2011-12 was due to IGA’s sponsorship <strong>of</strong> the<br />
distribution and retailing <strong>of</strong> the calendar.<br />
Over $250,000 <strong>of</strong> Wildlife Conservation Action<br />
funds raised in 2010-11 were allocated to wildlife<br />
conservation projects in 2011-12 including:<br />
• Conservation projects in the unique Bukit<br />
Tigapuluh region in Sumatra, Indonesia,<br />
including an orangutan reintroduction<br />
program, an orangutan sanctuary, wildlife<br />
protection units, a project to mitigate humanelephant<br />
conflict and a mobile education unit.<br />
