Perth Zoo Docent Association<br />
<strong>The</strong> Perth Zoo Docent Association is a<br />
separately incorporated volunteer organisation.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Docent Association shares Perth Zoo’s<br />
vision and purpose but has a separate charter<br />
which is to ‘contribute through their expertise<br />
and outstanding customer service, to the<br />
achievement <strong>of</strong> the Zoo’s conservation mission<br />
ensuring visitors have an enjoyable outing’.<br />
Around 350 Docents (volunteers) contribute<br />
many thousands <strong>of</strong> hours <strong>of</strong> unpaid service<br />
to the Zoo each year enhancing the visitor<br />
experience through the provision <strong>of</strong> guiding,<br />
education and information services, and<br />
contributing to the many other areas <strong>of</strong> Zoo<br />
operations including fundraising and behind the<br />
scenes activities.<br />
In 2012, the Docent Association celebrated<br />
30 years <strong>of</strong> continuous operation at Perth Zoo.<br />
During the reporting period, Perth Zoo<br />
Docents contributed 40,126 hours <strong>of</strong> service<br />
with an average <strong>of</strong> over 14.27 hours per<br />
Docent monthly. Duties included staffing the<br />
Information Centre, conducting guided tours<br />
and assisting with events and functions, as well<br />
as providing hands-on learning experiences<br />
and <strong>of</strong>f-site presentations to community<br />
groups. Behind the scenes, Docents created<br />
behavioural enrichment items for the animals<br />
and contributed $5,000 to Perth Zoo projects.<br />
