Susan Hunt PSM, BA (Hons), MA (Arts)<br />

Chief Executive Officer<br />

Susan Hunt was appointed Chief Executive<br />

Officer in 2004 after joining the Zoo in May<br />

2000 as Director <strong>of</strong> Business Operations. Ms<br />

Hunt has a background in policy and planning<br />

in the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n public sector and<br />

worked in the university and private sectors in<br />

social science research, writing and lecturing.<br />

She has been a Board member <strong>of</strong> the Zoo and<br />

Aquarium Association (Australasia) since 2004<br />

and was President <strong>of</strong> the Zoo Association from<br />

2007 until 2011. Ms Hunt was appointed to<br />

the Council <strong>of</strong> the World Association <strong>of</strong> Zoos<br />

and Aquariums (WAZA) in April 2012 for a<br />

two-year term and also appointed Chair <strong>of</strong> the<br />

WAZA Ethics and Welfare Committee. She is<br />

also a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> the<br />

International Species Management System and<br />

is a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Australia</strong>n and New Zealand<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Government. Ms Hunt was awarded<br />

a Public Service Medal (PSM) in the 2010<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> Day Honours list for her outstanding<br />

contribution to conservation and public service.<br />

Maria Finnigan<br />

Director Life Sciences<br />

Maria Finnigan joined the Perth Zoo team in<br />

December 2007. Ms Finnigan has extensive<br />

experience in ex-situ and in-situ management<br />

<strong>of</strong> fauna and was a curator at Auckland Zoo<br />

and Life Sciences Manager at <strong>Western</strong> Plains<br />

Zoo in New South Wales before moving to<br />

Perth. Her experience in the field includes<br />

several years in Africa with the Serengeti Lion<br />

Project, the Tanzanian Wildlife Department<br />

and with the Jane Goodall Institute working on<br />

the establishment <strong>of</strong> chimpanzee sanctuaries.<br />

As Life Sciences Director at Perth Zoo, she<br />

is responsible for the <strong>Australia</strong>n fauna, exotic<br />

mammals and elephant sections and linked<br />

conservation priorities. Ms Finnigan is also the<br />

Australasian Species Management Program<br />

Coordinator for chimpanzees, a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Australasian Species Management Program<br />

Committee, and an accreditation <strong>of</strong>ficer and<br />

Animal Welfare Committee member for the Zoo<br />

and Aquarium Association.<br />

Dr Peter Mawson B.Sc.(Hons), PhD<br />

Director Animal Health and Research<br />

Peter Mawson joined the Zoo in January<br />

2012 after working for the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Environment and Conservation<br />

for 17 years, the last 7 years as Principal<br />

Zoologist. Dr Mawson is responsible for the<br />

Zoo’s research program, reproductive biology<br />

unit, native species breeding program and<br />

veterinary department. He is also responsible for<br />

developing collaborative research and breeding<br />

programs with other scientific institutions to<br />

support Zoo conservation activities.<br />
