In 2011‐12, Perth Zoo:<br />
• Achieved a record attendance figure <strong>of</strong><br />
640,642 – the highest in the Zoo’s history.<br />
• Generated $7.2 million revenue from<br />
admissions, a 9.5% increase over the<br />
previous year.<br />
• Achieved a 10% increase in retail shop sales<br />
and a 35% increase in the retail shop net<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>it to $266,553. <strong>The</strong> increase was the<br />
result <strong>of</strong> the record admission numbers and<br />
followed a 5% drop in retail shop sales and a<br />
23% decrease in the retail shop net pr<strong>of</strong>it in<br />
the previous year.<br />
• Increased Friends <strong>of</strong> Perth Zoo membership<br />
revenue by 8.7% from last year to $1,046,553.<br />
• Raised $305,874 through the Zoo’s<br />
community fundraising program, Wildlife<br />
Conservation Action, to support threatened<br />
species in the wild. Over $250,000 raised<br />
in the previous year went to wildlife<br />
conservation projects in 2011‐12.<br />
• Received catering dividends (functions and<br />
café outlets) <strong>of</strong> $528,874, an increase <strong>of</strong> 1%<br />
over the previous year.<br />
• Received vending commission revenue<br />
<strong>of</strong> $57,533, an increase <strong>of</strong> 23% over the<br />
previous year.<br />
• Experienced declines in some areas <strong>of</strong><br />
commercial revenue including car parking<br />
and venue hire for externally managed<br />
concerts with fewer concerts held over the<br />
summer season.<br />
Revenue<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Zoological</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> receives<br />
revenue from the State Government as an<br />
appropriation to fund services. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Authority</strong><br />
also generates its own revenue from the<br />
operations <strong>of</strong> Perth Zoo including visitor<br />
admissions, commercial activities and education<br />
programs. In addition, the Zoo receives grants,<br />
sponsorships and bequests for activities such<br />
as animal breeding, research and exhibit<br />
development. Total revenue <strong>of</strong> over $23 million<br />
was received in 2011‐12.<br />
A total <strong>of</strong> 640,642 people visited Perth Zoo<br />
during the year, contributing gate revenue <strong>of</strong><br />
over $7.2 million, an increase <strong>of</strong> 9.5% over<br />
the previous year. <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> visitors was<br />
4.7% above last year’s figure <strong>of</strong> 611,793.<br />
An admission price increase from 1 July 2011<br />
resulted in the yield increasing by 4.5% over<br />
the previous year to $11.23. Revenue from<br />
membership sales increased by 8% over the<br />
previous year to $1,046,533. <strong>The</strong> combined<br />
total <strong>of</strong> admissions and membership revenue<br />
increased by 10.8% or over $706,000 from the<br />
previous year to $8.2 million.<br />

<strong>The</strong> previous trend <strong>of</strong> lower consumer spending<br />
experienced in 2009-10 and 2010‐11 in the<br />
Zoo shop reversed during the reporting period,<br />
assisted by the record visitor numbers. <strong>The</strong><br />
retail shop sales revenue increased by 10%<br />
over the previous year to $1.3 million and net<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>it increased by 35% over the previous<br />
year to $266,553. Catering dividends from the<br />
café and functions increased by just 1% over<br />
the previous year to $528,874 while vending<br />
commission revenue increased by 23% over<br />
the previous year to $57,533.<br />
