ROLE OF WORK UNIT<br />
Whilst the Youth Policing Division maintains responsibility for the recruitment, selection, training and<br />
overseeing standards in accordance with the agreed Concept <strong>of</strong> Operations and Standard Operating<br />
Procedures, the Youth Liaison Officer are locally deployed, supervised and managed by the relevant<br />
districts within Regional <strong>Western</strong> Australia and Metropolitan Regions.<br />
The Youth Liaison Officer establishes local problem pr<strong>of</strong>iles with the local Criminal Intelligence<br />
Coordination Unit (CICU) and local Police to gain knowledge <strong>of</strong> the district crime trends involving<br />
PPO’s, YO’s and YAR’s. The position coordinates the engagement and interaction with <strong>youth</strong> as a<br />
means to contribute to the reduction in <strong>of</strong>fending <strong>of</strong> young people.<br />
Aligned to a national and state focus on <strong>youth</strong> at risk, the Youth Policing Division is responsible for<br />
strategically shaping the WAPOL approach to policing <strong>youth</strong>. The Division provides an innovative<br />
focus on ownership <strong>of</strong> juvenile justice and leadership in <strong>youth</strong> policing through policy development, the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> effective internal and multi-agency external relationships, and through the provision <strong>of</strong><br />
operational support and guidance.<br />
The Youth Policing Division comprises three (3) business units, including Youth Policing Operations,<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Education Liaison and School Leavers. Youth Liaison Officers will primarily engage<br />
with the Youth Policing Operations business unit.<br />
KEY RELATIONSHIPS<br />
To maintain an efficient and effective service in addressing <strong>youth</strong> policing and juvenile justice, the<br />
position implements and coordinates crime diversionary programs to address WAPOL identified<br />
community <strong>youth</strong> issues in consultation and collaboration with government and non government<br />
organisations. The position interacts primarily with PPO’s, YO’s and YAR’s and maintains a close<br />
linkage with Youth Service Providers including the local PCYC, to engage <strong>youth</strong> at risk, particularly<br />
PPO’s.<br />
The incumbent will also develop and maintain productive working relationships with service providers<br />
<strong>of</strong> diversionary programs for young people as well as engage local government authorities, working<br />
groups and other relevant WAPOL business units that are pertinent to and actively work with PPO’s,<br />
YO’s and YAR <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fending.<br />

External to WAPOL, the position will liaise with other government and non-government agencies in<br />
the areas <strong>of</strong> justice, education, <strong>youth</strong> affairs, sport and recreation, child protection, local government,<br />
sporting associations, local businesses to develop mutually beneficial outcomes that reduce the<br />
<strong>of</strong>fending rates <strong>of</strong> young <strong>of</strong>fenders, particularly PPO’s.<br />
DECISION MAKING ROLE<br />
The incumbent has the autonomy to perform day-to-day designated duties within established policy<br />
and guidelines with minimal supervision. Matters <strong>of</strong> a contentious nature or activities not within<br />
normal business or activities outside standard practice are referred to the position’s line supervisor.<br />
The position incumbent has capacity to make recommendations on changes to policy, procedures and<br />
processes to the Youth Policing Division via their chain <strong>of</strong> command.<br />
