(5) Will the Minister support the Hunter rail services and retain the Newcastle service?
Answer—
I am advised:
(1) to (5) An independent community survey commissioned by the Government, together with public
submissions on the Newcastle City Centre Renewal Report, revealed considerable community and
business support for revitalisation of the Newcastle City Centre and the removal of the heavy rail line in
Newcastle.
On 4 September 2009, the Premier announced that the Government would allocate Crown Land at
Honeysuckle for Stage 1 of the University of Newcastle's inner city campus, which is a key catalyst
project in the Renewal Report.
An independent economic assessment by property and economic advisors Urbis estimate an investment
of $1.4 billion in the Hunter Region would be created through proposed revitalisation projects.
The Premier's announcement on 4 September 2009 indicated that Government will undertake a detailed
scoping study of transport arrangements to inform the revitalisation of the Newcastle City Centre.
