*7553 POWER INTERRUPTIONS—NORTHERN SYDNEY REGION—Mr Rob Stokes asked the Minister<br />

for Education and Training, and Minister for Women representing the Minister for Primary Industries,<br />

Minister for Energy, Minister for Mineral Resources, and Minister for State Development—<br />

(1) How many power interruptions occurred in the <strong>No</strong>rthern Sydney region during:<br />

(a) 2006;<br />

(b) 2007;<br />

(c) 2008;<br />

(d) 2009 year to date?<br />

(2) What was the cause <strong>of</strong> those power interruptions?<br />

(3) What was the average number <strong>of</strong> power interruptions across the entire Sydney metropolitan area<br />

during:<br />

(a) 2006;<br />

(b) 2007;<br />

(c) 2008;<br />

(d) 2009 year to date?<br />

(4) What measures is the Government taking to reduce the number <strong>of</strong> power outages in the <strong>No</strong>rthern<br />

Sydney Region?<br />

Answer—<br />

I am advised EnergyAustralia's northern Sydney region includes parts <strong>of</strong> the Hills and northern districts,<br />

the northern beaches and north shore areas.<br />

(1) (a) 1,057<br />

(b) 1,339<br />

(c) 1,071<br />

(d) 804 year to date<br />

(2) The major causes <strong>of</strong> these power interruptions are as follows:<br />

• Third party impact.<br />

• Wildlife and vegetation.<br />

• Adverse weather.<br />

• Customer's installation.<br />

• Equipment faults.<br />

(3) Average power interruptions are reported as the System Average Interruption Frequency Index<br />

(SAIFI), which is a standard reliability measurement used for the electricity industry. SAIFI<br />

measures the average number <strong>of</strong> interruptions experienced per connected customer. Across<br />

EnergyAustralia's network in the Sydney metropolitan area, the SAIFI figures for the requested<br />

periods are:<br />

(4) Over the next five years EnergyAustralia will invest about $8 billion in its electricity network -<br />

including more than $1.2 billion in renewing, boosting and upgrading the electricity network in the<br />

northern Sydney region. Some <strong>of</strong> the outcomes through this significant investment program include:<br />

• improved reliability and greater security <strong>of</strong> supply by meeting the mandatory design criteria;<br />

and<br />

• meeting reliability targets in the licence conditions through secure redundancy and asset<br />

condition.<br />

"Working with Children Check", even when requested by the employer and employee?<br />
