*7469 INDUSTRY SUBSIDY FOR COAL EXPORTERS—Mr Greg Piper asked the Minister for Water, and<br />

Minister for Regional Development—<br />

With the 2009 budget taking NSW into deficit, why does the Government plan to provide $20 million<br />

assistance to coal exporters over the next two years through an industry subsidy?<br />

Answer—<br />

The global economic recession is impacting the viability <strong>of</strong> some regional coal mines.<br />

The $20 million assistance package will protect more than 2,000 direct jobs in the Western and Gunnedah<br />

Coalfields from the global recession.<br />

The package will help the industry take advantage <strong>of</strong> export opportunities when coal prices improve and<br />

demand increases.<br />

*7471 MANDATORY AIR QUALITY STANDARD—Mr Greg Piper asked the Deputy Premier, Minister for<br />

Climate Change and the Environment, and Minister for Commerce—<br />

What steps are being taken to implement a mandatory air quality standard for PM2.5?<br />

Answer—<br />

The National Environment Protection Measure for Ambient Air Quality (Air NEPM) was amended in<br />

2003 to include two advisory reporting standards for particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter<br />

(PM2.5).<br />

The National Environment Protection Council is currently reviewing the Air NEPM, including the PM2.5<br />

standards. Information on the Air NEPM review is available on the Environment Protection and Heritage<br />

Council website at www.ephc.gov.au<br />
