Work is currently being undertaken on the Coopernook to Herons Creek upgrade. The project has been
affected by five months of unseasonable wet weather which has caused some delays. It is expected that
*7350 LYMES DISEASE—Mr Steve Cansdell asked the Deputy Premier, Minister for Climate Change and the
I am advised:
(1) Lyme disease is a tick-borne zoonosis caused by the spirochaete bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi.
Since the disease was first recognised in 1975 it has become the most frequently reported human
tick-borne infection worldwide. It has been reported from every continent (except Antarctica)
although doubt remains as to whether it occurs in the southern hemisphere in general, and in
Australia in particular. People in NSW with Lyme disease that is acquired overseas are recognised
and treated as appropriate.
(2) No. Your question regarding information given to National Parks and Wildlife officers should be
redirected to the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment.
(3) Lyme disease is not a notifiable disease in NSW therefore exact numbers of cases diagnosed is not
available. Occasional imported cases are recognised. NSW Health is not aware of any cases of
