<strong>Winter</strong><strong>2013</strong> Les Nouvelles 9 Parishnews Right: Le Court Clos Christmas party Claire Jehan’s cover photograph shows how light and the clever use of time lapse can transform the Parish Church into something quite magical. But so can a fall of snow. Claire’s image of the church in January reveals a timeless scene. Polar bears, it seems, are roaming far from their ice flows, but to St Martin? Well, if anyone can spot one in the Rue Des Raisies it will be Claire Jehan. Here the bear enjoys a romp in the garden with its new friend, Maya Shobbroke Walton. Imagine the scene: January 1945, the last year of the war. This Island of ours had endured nearly five years of German occupation, the Christmas of 1944 being the most miserable in living memory. Yet there were some reasons to be cheerful: the war for the Allied forces in Europe was going well and the Red Cross ship, Vega, had docked, bringing much needed provisions for islanders, including a small amount of flour. Mr Amy was the proprietor of the St Martin’s Bakery, situated on the site where the Village Tea Room now stands. He was also the Vingtenier for L’Eglise and he had a plan! The Honorary Police meet once a month in order to discuss how policing matters have gone for the previous month and what is likely to happen in the following one. It was no different in 1945, so, at the conclusion of that meeting, imagine the surprise when Mr Amy presented the assembly with portions of lardy cake (a confection of flour, lard, raisons and sugar ) he had baked especially for the occasion! A worthy thing to have done you might say, but what relevance has that to do with our community today? That little occasion has become a tradition, and every year since it is the lot of the Vingtenier for L’Eglise to supply the Police meeting with lardy cake. Unfortunately, that delicacy is no longer available locally and the confection provided is Guernsey Goche! Not very traditional, you might think, but to placate the purists it is smothered in Jersey butter! The current Vingtenier for L’Eglise is Steve Falle, and this year it was his task, as he has done for the last six years, to provide the Guernsey Goche. Our thanks to Steve for this unique bit of Parish News Just before Christmas, residents of Le Court Clos attended an afternoon tea party at the Public Hall at the invitation of the Connétable and his wife. The residents completed an entertaining quiz and tins of chocolates were presented to the winning team members. A large heated buffet followed prepared by Ian Gicquel and Julie Whitel in the kitchen with a number of helpers and many returned for “seconds” such was the feast Ian and Julie provided. The Christmas Cake was once again made by Le Court Clos resident Mrs Sheila Videgrain, seen here cutting the first slice. Unfortunately some residents were away for Christmas and others unwell but all those who attended had an enjoyable afternoon.
