This research paper focuses on the societal and political implications of the<br />
first major domestic and international crisis under General Secretary<br />
Mikhail Gorbachev. It examines the impact of the <strong>Chernobyl</strong>' accident on<br />
the Soviet population, popular reaction to the event, and the effect on<br />
popular attitudes toward the Soviet bureaucracy and leadership. It provides<br />
the reader with a feel for how various strata of Soviet society reacted to<br />
this near-catastrophic event during a period of leadership-induced social<br />
ferment.<br />
