1.0 INTRODUCTION
A three days workshop of stakeholders for the Pesticides and Poverty project
was organised by AGENDA for Environment and Responsible Development
(AGENDA) and Tanzania Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (TPAWU).
The workshop was held at the Centre for Continuing Education, University of Dar
es Salaam from 03 – 05 August 2005. The main aim of the workshop was to
build capacity and raise awareness among key stakeholders, and bringing them
together into a dialogue and action so as to assist the effective implementation of
the Chemical Conventions and Processes in Tanzania. This will help to integrate
an environmental dimension into national development priorities and promote
sustainable livelihoods in rural areas. This workshop is the initial activity in the
implementation of the Pesticide and poverty project. The workshop was attended
by 28 participants from government departments and agencies, academia,
research institutions, NGOs and CBOs.
The objectives of the first multistakeholders’ workshop were to:
Disseminate the aims, objectives and activities of the project;
Gather stakeholders’ inputs and to plan activities for three years;
Present information on the current level of national implementation of the
Chemical Conventions;
Review needs of the participants and stakeholders for implementation of
Chemical Conventions;
Identify ways that Chemical Conventions and Processes could benefit
stakeholders’ work and responsibilities;
Identify areas of overlap at the level of national implementation for
resource sharing;
Identify possible joint initiatives between stakeholders; and
Review and further develop the national stakeholders map.
The workshop was structured into plenary session (paper presentation and
discussion) and group work (refer to the workshop programme in appendix I).
2.0 OPENING
2.1 Welcome Remarks
The welcome remarks were delivered by the Projects Manager of the AGENDA,
Ms Saada K. Juma. In her remarks, she thanked the participants for availing time
to attend the workshop and share their views on such important event.
