THE PAINT HORSE ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA
• December/January 2007 •
WELCOME to the final issue of the Paint Horse
Journal for 2006 and what a great year it has
been, the 2005-6 year has been an exciting year
for the Paint Horse Association of Australia Ltd
with healthy growth in all of our core areas of
income.
Each and every member should be
proud of their Association and the
results achieved in the 2005-6
Financial Year. Memberships and
Registrations are at an all time high,
as are the number of transfers and
the Association has turned in a
record profit for the year.
We have made improvements within
our office with new computers, a
new telephone system and updating
a small amount of furniture. We have
also recently installed airconditioning
– no more 38 degree
days in the office over Summer!
The staff are continually evaluating
our practices and putting forward
recommendations to the Board to
enhance our services and our
procedures.
The Board have recently introduced
some changes to our fee structure,
simplifying registration fees and
offering discounts in some cases.
The Building Fund is now
established and at the time of
writing there is already over $8000-
in this account.
Please take a moment to look over
the graphs I have compiled, they
will illustrate the growth of the
Association in it’s core business
areas as well as giving an insight
into some statistics that may be of
interest to you.

MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS
As at June 30th 2006, the Paint Horse
Association of Australia Ltd held 1412
financial memberships, the two graphs
above illustrate the growth in
memberships over the last 10 years as
well as giving a break up of the
numbers of each category of
membership.
In effect there was a total of 1412
memberships, equating to
1652 voting members.
REGISTRATIONS
Once again our registrations have
increased in numbers.
Our registrations consist of
Overo 46.11%, Tobiano 11.82%,
Solid 32.85%, Tobero 7.49%
and Sabino 1.73%
There are more females registered
than males. The gender statistics are
the gender at time of registration, if
upgraded to stallion or gelded after
registration the change does not
reflect in these statistics.
Almost one half of all horses
registered are Chestnut.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Thank you must go to both Alison Lord
and Linda Slee for the hard work and
dedication shown by both of these
ladies whilst Directors of the
Association. Both Alison and Linda
were delight to work with and will be
missed by the Office Staff.
And welcome goes to Sally McPhee,
recently elected at the 2006 Annual
General Meeting.

EDUCATIONAL LIBRARY
As you may be aware, a Youth
Development Fund has been set up
and operational for 2 years. The
monies held in this fund are now
reaching healthy levels and it is time to
utilise some for the benefit of our Youth
members. During the last Board
Meeting it was decided to build a
library of educational books and DVD’s
relevant to Paint Horses, horse care,
breeding and principles as well as
training and showing.
We will be purchasing a quantity of
books and DVD’s and will make a list
available for members to borrow.Youth
will be able to borrow these materials
free of charge and all other members
are welcome to borrow, however will
be levied a $5- borrowing fee plus
return postage. We will set up a
borrowing system and listing that you
will be able to read about in the near
future.
If any one has any item that they feel
may be suitable to this purpose we
would gladly welcome donations of
books, DVD’s and the like.
FEE SAVINGS
DNA TYPING – the fee has been
reduced by $10- to $100-.
COMBINED DNA /
REGISTRATION FEE
As all fillies and colts eventually require
DNA typing for breeding purposes, the
Board has introduced a "new fee" or in
fact, a reduction in the cost of
registration and DNA typing, provided
the requests are made at the same
time. When a registration application is
submitted and is accompanied by a
request for a DNA kit for the horse that

forward by one of our members and we
hope that it will encourage members to
DNA type their foals on registration.

Of course if you are upgrading a colt to
stallion the fee remains unchanged at
$585- including DNA, or $485- if the colt
has already been DNA typed.
SHOW APPROVAL FEE
A reminder to all clubs that you may be
able to save some money by applying
for annual approval of your shows.
Rather than having each show approved
independently you can have blanket
approval for a 12 month period,
provided there are no program changes
that would effect approval throughout
the year. Annual Fee = $100 compared
to per show fee of $22-.
2007 YOUTH & AMATEUR CAMP
& PAINT-O-RAMA
Put aside the following dates for the
PHAA Youth & Amateur Camp and Painto-rama
7th – 11th June 2007, held in
Grafton, NSW and followed by shows
hosted by the North Coast Western
Riding Club.
REGISTRATIONS
A new simplified registration form has
been introduced, you no longer need to
complete the diagram section with
whorls, scars & brands, nor do you need
to provide the details of grand-parents
as this information should be stored on
our database. If you are using a Quarter
Horse or Thoroughbred parent please
ensure that you include a photocopy of
the relevant registration certificate or
passport.
REGISTRATION REMINDER-
FUTURITY FOALS
Registrations for futurity foals – must be
in the PHAA office by 31st December.
2007 SHOW REMINDERS
Tentative dates for the next Paint Horse
National Championship Show – Tuesday
April 3rd through to Sunday April 8th
2007.
Tentative date for the 2007 Annual
General Meeting - Monday 2nd April
2007 also in Dubbo.
Futurity Payment dates – 3rd payment is
due December 31st and final payment
February 28th. No payments will be
accepted beyond February 28th. Late
third payments can be made at double
the usual fee.

This is a once off lifetime listing fee
and will include your initial Service

The photographs must contain at least
one Paint Horse as the subject, they
don’t have to be foals, they can be Paint

PHAA - RULE CHANGES...
PROPOSED RULE CHANGE – In addition to the
requirements for High Point 2YO, High Point Junior Horse
and High Point Senior Horse there shall be a requirement
of a minimum of 5 points at halter and 5 points at
performance (within the required categories) in order to
qualify for the award. All in favour.
IMMEDIATE RULE CHANGE RULE 219 - delete "In a
case where "spot checks" are done on show results and
entries are shown to be incorrect by the exhibitor, all
points won by the horse in the class in which the error
was located will be cancelled. All cards must show the
full registered name of the horse. All points must be
submitted on official show result forms." And replace with
- "In a case where "spot checks" are done on show results
and entries are shown to be incorrect by the exhibitor in
which case the exhibitor would gain more points than are
correct, all points won by the horse in the class in which
the error was located will be cancelled. Had no
advantage be gained points on the lesser amount of
entries will be awarded. All cards must show the full
registered name of the horse. All points must be
submitted on official show result forms."
IMMEDIATE RULE CHANGE -
RULE 219A SHOW HIGH POINT AWARDS
Amend – "It is recommended that all High Point Awards
that are available at a show be published along with the
show program / entry forms and advertised in any
printed schedule."
To read "It is mandatory at State Championship Shows
and Paint-o-ramas and recommended at other Shows
that all High Point Awards that are available at a show be
published along with the show program / entry forms
and advertised in any printed schedule."Immediate
Rule Change – Rule 237. Insert after (i) (f)
AMATEUR HALTER CLASSES
Amateur Halter Classes are to be judged in the same
manner as Halter Classes, as described in Rule 231.
In order to obtain PHAA points, Amateur Halter classes
must be closed to Paint Horses (Regular Registered) only
or Paint Bred Horses only. Mixed Sex classes will not
receive points, exception Grand Champion.
An Amateur may only exhibit one horse in a class. More
than one horse may be exhibited by one Amateur,
provided that each horse is exhibited in a separate class.
Should an Amateur have more than one horse qualify for
any Champion, Reserve Champion or Grand Champion
award, then that Amateur can only show one of the
qualifying horses and the other horse/s can not be shown
by another exhibitor or considered for those awards." All
in favour Carried
Recent HSAA rule change to Amateur status will affect
many of our members. PHAA aims to be a family & friend
oriented Associations and encourages family and friends
to help each other. PHAA does not have it’ sown A/O
qualification rule.
IMMEDIATE RULE CHANGE - Rule 237 (i) delete
"Amateur eligibility: as per HSAA Rule Book, with the
following exceptions:" and replace with "
AMATEUR QUALIFICATION: To qualify as an Amateur
exhibitor with the PHAA, and individual must meet the
following requirements:
1. Age. An individual is considered an Amateur exhibitor
when he/she is no longer eligible to show in the Youth
program. For Amateur eligibility purposes, the age of an
individual as of August 1 will be maintained through out
the point scoring year.
2. Remuneration restrictions.
a. For a period of 36 months (three years) prior to the
date of an application for Amateur status is received in
the PHAA office, an applicant may not have shown,
ridden, trained or assisted in training (led, ridden or
driven)a horse for remuneration, either directly or
indirectly; not received remuneration for instructing
another person in riding, driving or training a horse; nor
received remuneration for instructing another person in
showing a horse in competition.
b. An individual may not have shown, ridden, trained or
assisted in the training of a horse for which the
individuals spouse, at the time, accepted any form of
remuneration, either directly or indirectly, for training,
assisting in training, or showing of said horse in
competition for a period of 36 months (3 years) prior to
the date an application for Amateur status is receive in
the PHAA office.
c. Entry Fees. An individual who has had the entry fees
paid would still be eligible for Amateur status. Payment of
entry fees by someone other than the immediate family
shall not be considered remuneration unless entry fees
were paid for service rendered.
d. Amateur status. Amateur status may be maintained
only by continual refusal of remuneration.
e. The following activities shall not affect the amateur
qualification of an individual –
i. The writing of books pertaining to horses
ii. Accepting remuneration for judging or stewarding
iii. Receiving prize money
iv. Having the occupation of farrier, veterinarian,
thoroughbred trainer or trotting trainer.
v. Owning or operating a saddlery, stud or breeding
farm or boarding stables."

PRESIDENTS REPORT - by Craig Dengate
F
irst of all I would like to welcome three
new PHAA members to the PHAA Board
Of Directors, Jeffrey Hall from Dubbo NSW,
Angela Newton from QLD and Sally McPhee
from NSW. My gratitude is expressed
greatly to these three PHAA members that
have decided to take an interest in the
business of the PHAA. With my experience
gained on the PHAA Board there is an
unlimited amount of work that can be done
to promote our Paint Horses and our
member services. These three new Board
members come from different backgrounds
and I believe they will have a diversity of
experience and direction that I am looking
forward to being involved with on the Board.
I also would like to thank Lee Wear and
Donna Kennett for their consideration to
again be a part of the Board and look
forward to their input.
TO ALL PHAA MEMBERS! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
YOUR ASSOCIATION? With some input from the most
recent Directors we will be directing our effort into helping
members feel good about their Association, this makes
sense for the betterment and the growth of our Association.
The best advertising for our Association is contented
members who are proud of their Association and what the
Association does for the members. Of course, this requires
you the member to take an active part in forwarding
information when appropriate so that the current Directors
can use this information effectively. For your input I will
guarantee you a response, your thoughts are important to
me. If you have any positive ideas or issues that you feel
need to be addressed I would like to know about them.
Our last Annual General Meeting was well attended, our
usual formal requirements were attended to as well as using
this opportunity to present our High Point and Honour Roll
awards to the successful exhibitors. My congratulations
goes to those exhibitors and with your promotion of Paint
Horses our Association will surely grow. It was a good
opportunity for me to meet some of our competitors and to
put faces behind names and to keep in touch.
Congratulations goes to Noel Parker and Chris Burton on
acceptance of their HONOURARY LIFE MEMBER AWARDS.
As President of the PHAA being part of the presentation was
rewarding for me to acknowledge these people who have
given commitment to
our Association over
considerable past years.
You may ask why it was
rewarding for me, how
PHAA life members have
been a part of the fabric of
our Association to make it
what it is today, the
Association has given me
great enjoyment.
If you are not already aware
the next PHAA Annual
General Meeting will be
held in conjunction with the 2007 National Show held at
Dubbo. This decision to hold the AGM in conjunction with
our National Show was voted in by our members and I
believe that this decision will be effective in giving the
opportunity for our members to participate, as during the
National Show we already have the most amount of PHAA
members gathered together at the same time. In the past
members wishing to attend the AGM would usually have had
to travel considerable distance to be involved in this
meeting.
At our Board meeting in September the Board considered
several issues that you may be interested in.
PHAA GOODS AND SERVICES AUCTION, in the past few
years the funds raised from this event were distributed
evenly between our PHAA Youth and the PHAA nominated
charity Father Chris Riley’s Youth Of The Streets Program.
After consideration the Board have decided to allocate funds
raised as follows –each year 50% will go towards the PHAA
Building Fund, the remaining 50% will be paid on alternate
years to The Youth Trip and the Youth Development Fund
Opinions were expressed that we needed to help ourselves
before we could help others, and it is of considerable
importance that we acquire our own PHAA Building. The
PHAA Building Fund already has approximately $8000.00 in
the account, boosted by 50% of funds raised from the Youth
Goods And Services Auction annually will help us achieve
our goal. This decision has been based on PHAA members
input to our Directors. First year Youth Development Fund &
Building Fund, following year Youth Trip & Building Fund.
Consideration was given to the current Amateur Owner rule
which had been adopted from the Horse Show Association
Of Australia show and performance rules, which we
currently use. With the proposal of the HSAA changing the
requirements of the amateur owner the PHAA did not
believe that this new proposal for the amateur owner was in

keeping with the future direction of the PHAA where our
amateur members are able to help one another showing
their horses. The PHAA has established our own amateur
owner qualifications. Over recent years comment has been
forwarded to me regarding grey areas of interpretation of the
amateur owner rule, therefore the new PHAA amateur owner
rule was taken into consideration.
In recent times a number of exhibitors have had
discrepancies within their show results submitted to the
PHAA, it hasn’t always been the error of the exhibitor and in
some cases exhibitors have even under estimated the
number of horses that they have competed against in a class.
Under previous rule 219 exhibitors would not be awarded
points where discrepancies were found to occur. On
consideration of these occurrences the PHAA Board have
voted to amend rule 219 to the effect, that provided no points
advantage would be gained, points calculated on the lesser
amount of entries would be awarded. It is the intent of the
PHAA to reward the showing and promotion of Paint Horses
where possible. I would urge you to make yourself aware of
new rule changes, new rule changes are listed in our PHAA
Journal and are available from the office or website. I’m sure
some of our PHAA members find it a task to keep up with
rule changes, but as situations arise it is the PHAA Board’s
responsibility to ensure that our show rules be adjusted to
permit the most positive and effective experience in showing
our Paint Horses.

W
elcome to my first report and thank
you to those members who had the
confidence to allow me this honour.
I look forward to working with the current
Board of Directors who are enthusiastic and
energetic, already with some exciting new
ideas for us all to work on as a Team. I am
proud to have been appointed as Vice
President of your Association and will
strive to do the best job possible for the
membership at large.
Firstly I wish to address an issue that has been raised. You
may be aware that my darling wife, Lee Ann Hall is employed
by the Association in the position of Office Manager. Whilst
a minority may see this situation as a conflict of interest,
everyone who has met us would be aware that my wife and I
work extremely well as a team, whilst maintaining our own
individual opinions – which may not always be the same. This
has been evident in our duties with past National Show
management, Youth Team Trips and our day to day lives. I
would like to put minds at rest, the matter has been raised
with solicitors and there are no legal ramifications on any
person holding a position on the Board if their spouse or
partner is an employee of the Association. The Association
already has in place processes in which I as Director, or Lee
Ann as staff may be removed or dismissed if there are any
conflicts detrimental to the
Association or for any
matters of dishonesty.
Further I am prohibited to
vote on any issues that
relate to the matter of Lee
Ann’s employment or
employment conditions
and as you would be
aware staff members have
no voting rights within
Board of Directors
Meetings. I welcome your
questions if you have any
concerns.
The Directors, fired with enthusiasm, have reviewed the list of
active portfolios and have put together a refreshing list of
portfolios designed to serve the needs of our broad
membership base. This is something that needs to be done
from time to time to ensure that the Association grows in the
direction our members desire. The portfolios that I have
been appointed to are Judges, Show and Performance and
also Rules and Regulations. Both portfolios will take quite a
lot of work and time and will need a large amount of input
directly from our members. Neither portfolio will be an
overnight job, they both need considerable amount of
consideration at this point of time and then continuing review.
Close involvement of the members is essential in many of the

portfolios and particularly in matters pertaining to our Shows
and our Judges as these two portfolios impact directly on so
many members and on the value of our Paint Horses. To
ensure that members can have input, have their say or be
heard, I am recommending to the Board that we introduce
individual Task Forces. I envisage the Task Forces will be as
follows -
• PURPOSE - To open the lines of communication with our
membership and enhance the input made by the core
membership in assisting the Board in decision making
processes on a per issue basis.
• GOAL - To establish a fair and open method of decision
making and to create discussion and gain input within our
membership.
• STRUCTURE - Each Task Force will compose of 4
independent members and 1 Director who have an interest
in the matters of the particular Task Force. In some cases
more or less than 4 members may be appointed at the
discretion of the Board member appointed to the Task Force.
Any current member may be considered for or apply for
consideration to being appointed to a Task Force. In some
cases a professional who may not be a member may be
appointed to a Task Force.
• DUE PROCESS - Establish member based Task Forces on
matters and portfolios of interest. Task Force members
communicate with the open membership to gather ideas,
information, requests and suggestions.
• Task Force members gather information and listen to the
requests of our members in matters relevant to their Task
Force.
• Task Force members research matters at hand.
• Task Force members meet together and discuss the
information they have sourced.
• Task Force members formulate recommendations for the
Board of Directors to consider on issues that are relevant to
their Task Force.
• Chairperson of Task Force delivers report to Board of
Directors.
• Directors consider and act on report.
• ADMINISTRATION - Task Force members receive no
remuneration unless there are investigative expenses preapproved
by the Board of Directors.
Minutes of all meetings held by the Task Force need be
tuned in to the PHAA Office in line with due dates for agenda
items for each Board of Directors Meeting.
If adopted, the Task Forces will allow the Directors to make
well informed decisions with the advantage of having the
information to hand, supplied directly from those who are
active in the particular matter.
Our current rule book deals mainly with matters of
membership and registration, as well as Points, Awards,
Amateur & Youth programs, there is very little included that
deals with the rules for Showing. Presently the PHAA accepts
and operates under the Show & Performance rules of the
HSAA with a few exceptions noted in our own rule book. We
also recognize the judges of the HSAA. A new section is to be
introduced into our rule book to include the rules for Show
and Performance, until this is completed and accepted we
will continue to operate under the HSAA rulings.
My wife and I recently attended the 2006 APHA Convention
held in San Antonio, Texas, one of the reasons of my trip
being to witness Lee Ann taking her oath of office as a newly
elected Director for APHA . Any member of the Association
should be encouraged to attend this Convention, being both
informative and interesting. With well over 100 people in
attendance, 92 APHA Directors / alternates and APHA
members, seminars, meetings and social functions you are
kept busy the entire 3 days.
A major advantage is gained by the PHAA by having
International representation at this meeting. Australia was the
only International in attendance, further strengthening our
bonds with APHA.
It is interesting to experience the different ways that
Associations conduct their activities and meetings, there is
always something to learn. APHA meetings are structured a
little differently than here in Australia, I imagine that there are
a lot of differences in Corporations Law that dictate some of
the agenda. As well as the meetings of Executive Directors,
various committees and general membership, APHA offered
several educational seminars covering Equine related laws
(focusing on contracts and liability), the value of the internet
to equine organizations and businesses and agricultural
equipment suited to equine businesses. Out of Convention
activities were also available, including a tour of The Alamo.
If you ever have the opportunity I would strongly
recommend you take a holiday and include APHA
Convention in your list of activities.
Before you jump to conclusions please have an open mind
and let the "horse run it’s course". And may the horse be with
you – Paint Horse of course!

AMATEUR OWNER REPORT - by Kevin Mills
Y
es, I am back! I must start by thanking
Alison Lord for the great job she has
done with the Amateur Portfolio over the
past two years.Well I started with the
Amateur Portfolio over eleven years ago and
will be finishing up with it at the Annual
General Meeting in 2007. Thinking back on
how it all started, with only $500- each year
to cover all amateur expenses, including
high point awards was a bit daunting.
Thankfully, I received a telephone call from
Queensland Amateur Shirley Sommer who
offered to help me. This was the start of
many telephone calls and discussions on
organising end of year awards and raffles to
raise money for the portfolio.
The Amateur Portfolio really kicked off just a few short years
ago when Vicky Gough, also of Queensland, generously
offered to donate a foal for a fund raising raffle – this was the
first of the now very successful annual Amateur Foal raffles.
Thanks must go not only to Vicky, but also to our other
generous members who have since donated foals for our
raffles – Bronwyn Holobradek of Tasmania, Noel & Bev
Parker NSW, myself Kevin Mills NSW and Sarah Saxer of
Queensland.
This year, Craig Dengate & Karen Lonski of Smiths Creek
Paint Horses had offered to donate a foal for the raffle, they
have had such an unfortunate foaling season losing one mare
and another foal, we thank them for their offer and fully
understand that a Smiths Creek foal is no longer available.
At this stage we do not have a foal, though we have had an
indication from another member – pending birth of the foal.
We would still love to hear from anyone who would like to
donate a foal for this great cause, just in case our other great
member is unable to help us. Please contact the PHAA Office
if you would like to help.
It is a big ask for any member who donates a foal, having to
care for the foal and prepare it for the National Show. Though
there are a few small concessions the PHAA can offer anyone
who is able to help us, and we will try to help where we can.
The money generated from these raffles bought forward
another idea to give something back to the Amateurs. This
was to set up funding for clubs to run Amateur Clinics, the
clinics would have professional people giving their advice
and sharing their expertise on showing and training Paint
Horses. If you would like
your club to hold an
Amateur Clinic please
contact the office for
information regarding the
funding that may be
available. On the subject of
Amateur Clinics don’t
forget the PHAA Youth &
Amateur Camp held
annually in Grafton in early
June.
Some of our Amateurs
have put forward that they
would like to compete at the APHA World Show, similar to
how PHAA send a Youth Team to compete. This idea was
tabled by Lee Ann Hall, our International Delegate, at both
the 2005 and 2006 APHA International Committee Meetings
held in the USA. Unfortunately this will not come to fruition in
the near future, mainly due to the horse ownership
requirements with APHA and also the fact that there is not at
present an Amateur World Games or Tournament. In place of
competition, Director Lee Wear is looking at organising a
recreational trip to the World Show for Amateurs, if you are
interested please contact Lee. I would believe a good
number of Amateurs would need to show interest for this trip
to be made possible.
HSAA Proposed Rule – Some Amateurs may be aware of the
proposed HSAA rule which prohibits amateurs from showing
any horse other than their own, or their own family. This rule
was to come into effect 01.08.06, however had been
postponed until 01.08.07.
The PHAA Board considered the impact of this rule on our
own Amateurs, and have the opinion that as we are a family
and friend oriented organization we would encourage our
members to help each other. Many times at shows Amateurs
have been asked to help out a friend to show a horse in
which they have two entries – this is quite common at the
smaller shows when one person has 2 horses to take back in
for a Champion Award, or may have 2 horses one class after
the other and is simply too rushed to manage the showing.
Quite often you arrive at a show to find that there are no
horses entered into the 2 or 3 classes that are between your
own events and all of a sudden you are pressured – why
shouldn’t your friend be able to lead your horse in for the
Champion, or rush in at the last minute to help you out? What
if you are injured just before your halter class or get ill at a
show, wouldn’t it be nice for your friend to help you out by
taking the horse in for you. You see these things happening
all too often, and that is what we are about – family and

friends – working together and helping each other. Wouldn’t
it be a shame to lose this camaraderie.
For this reason PHAA have introduced a rule specifically for
PHAA Amateurs, of course retaining the essence of our
original rule and prohibiting professionals from competing
in Amateur classes. The rule is printed in this issue of the
journal along with all other rule changes.
The Amateur Portfolio has come a long way over the years
and thanks must go to every member or Director who has
been involved in this portfolio, and of course the support of
our members and Amateurs. Keep up the support and keep
the great ideas coming so the Amateur Program can forge
ahead.

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT REPORT - by Lee Wear
W
ell it’s been a great start to the show
season in NSW, I’ve been up and down
the coast and have seen lots of colour
out and about along with some quality solids. I
spent a week at the Appaloosa State show and
was proud to see the Paints out there mixing it
up in the all breeds open classes. Lee Ann and
Jeff Hall had a great pre show winning both the
Yearling and 3yr & Over Futurities and then onto
win the Supreme Halter Exhibit of the Show with
Sweet Justice. They then came back to compete
in the Open All Breeds All Age Halter Futurity to
get 4th with Hot Senorita and Reserve Champion
with Sweet Justice at the Appy State show, they
were the only Paints in
amongst the best NSW had to
offer in Appy’s. Mel Hogan
had a great pre show and
then went on to get 3rd in the

As the year races away and
before you know it will be
Christmas, I’d like to
suggest an Amateur Owner
event that I discussed at the
AGM and had a positive
response to, to see if we
should organise it. In the
past we have sent a Youth
Team to the World Show
and have asked about
doing the same with the
A/O’s, this isn’t possible at
this stage due to APHA
Amateur rules but I’ve had many discussions about how
great it would be to go to the World Show with other
Amateurs so we could have a look at what goes on and see
some of the ranches they have in the States. The trip would
include taking in the events of the World Show, shopping,
ranch tours, shopping, some sightseeing and of cause more
shopping. The World Show will run from the 24th June 2007
to the 7th July 2007, we would plan to make sure we got to
see the finals along with a variety of the heats and mix our
days with some ranch tours, sightseeing and shopping trips.
Depending on who is interested and what they would like to
see we plan to make the trip very flexible to make sure we
get the best fit for everyone going.
How much will it cost……….we wont know until we start
booking when we see how many people we get, but a ball
park figure of around $5000.00 should cover your airfares,
transport and accommodation and then you’ll need to gather
up your extra funds to shop……look out ebay. If you think
you might be interested in joining us please contact the Paint
Horse Office or myself to register your interest, we will need
about 10 to 15 people to get a group booking and discounts.
If I don’t see you around before Christmas do have a safe
and happy one and I look forward to being out and about
come January.

COMPANY SECRETARY REPORT - by Angela Newton
H
ello Everyone. As a new director I would
like to take this opportunity to introduce
myself.
I’ve been a member, breeder and competitor of Paints for
over 10 years. My husband Shane and I live in the
Beaudesert region of South East Queensland and we both
actively compete. My nomination for the Board of Directors
is my way of putting something back into the Association. I
honestly have a vested interest in the continued growth of the
PHAA as without it I can’t explain my crazy horse habit nor
justify the amounts of money I currently spend on horses.
Seriously though, I am proud of the family and community
spirit of the membership and the Board. This spirit is
prominent at shows and the envy of many other associations.
I’ve seen numerous people from other associations cross
over for this reason alone, so this is a trait worth preserving.
Shane and I cherish friendships built with people from all
around the country, a diverse group of people from the one
horse amateur owner to the big time breeders. Our common
interest, "The Paint Horse" brings us together.
I believe strongly about developing the bloodlines of our
horses across all disciplines and the promotion of showing
opportunities for all
competitors. It is, in my
opinion, important to
maintain the all-round
horse and feel the
contributions of Australian
bred horses are just as
important as those of t
he imported horses.
Additionally, I have a
particular interest in Paint
genes, bloodlines and
general horse genetics
and as such regularly
study the developments of
the leading research organisations. I also communicate
regularly with many APHA members which keeps me across
many of the issues facing their association.
I look forward to meeting you and your horses.

National Show Report...
The final program for the 2007
Paint Horse National Show has
been drawn and appears in
this issue. As mentioned in the
last report the Board have
taken into consideration many
facts, previous questionnaire
responses using the positives
and negatives of previous
years as a guide to formulate
a program to suit the majority
of our competitors.You will
never be able to draw a
program that is perfect for
every competitor, though
we have tried to be as close
to that as we can.
To assist in decision making about our
National Show, not just programs, we
will be conducting surveys at the
National Show. Please spend a few minutes of
your time to discuss the National Show with
the person conducting the interview if you are
approached. Not everyone returns
questionnaire forms, so we feel that a face to
face survey may prove beneficial.
I am pleased to announce that Carol Gleeson
is to be our 2007 National Show Secretary, I
am sure many of our competitors would be
familiar with Carol and the great job she has
done working for the NSW State Show. Our
Show Manager will again be Peter Simpson,
who has worked for the National Show for
quite a few years now.
• SPONSORSHIP – We offer many options in
respect of sponsorship opportunities for
businesses, studs and individuals. Why not be
a part of our National Show and show your
support of Paint Horses by sponsoring a
National Show event?
Arena signage sponsorship is one option.
Many businesses like to have their
acknowledgement / advertising placed in the
most prominent areas – one of which is in the
arena. PHAA offers a 2 year option for inarena
signage. The PHAA sign writing
company will prepare a sign from scratch, or
with your own artwork, of a standard size,
standard media that can be displayed in the
Show Arena during 2 consecutive years. In
between shows you are able to take the sign
with you or leave it for safe keeping with
PHAA. The total cost for this sponsorship,
including the purchase of the sign and
artwork is $550-.
Many more options are available starting with
single class sponsorship of $125.00.
• FREE CLASS ENTRY – another sponsorship
opportunity – in reverse. As a competitor you
have the chance to gain one free class entry
for each class sponsorship you gain. So go
out and drum up some sponsorship for your
National Show, you might save some entry fee
money! Forms are available to help you gain
the information you need to obtain your free
entry.
• PHOTOGRAPHER - A new face for the
National Show but familiar to many
competitors around the traps – Francene
Nuendorf. You will have seen Francene’s work
in various equestrian publications and in our
October Paint Horse Journal with a report on
the Queensland All Breeds Western
Performance State Show.
• ENTRY FEE CHANGES – Get your attention?
Entry fees have not been increased, in fact for
some competitors they may be less.
• YOUTH & AMATEUR - The cost per class
will remain the same – Youth $17.00, Amateur
$22.00 and Open $25.00, however there will
be a "cap" or "Flat entry fee" for Youth and
Amateurs to assist for those energetic
members who enjoy competing in a lot of
classes. Youth will have the option of paying
$17- per class or a flat fee of $170- and can
enter 10 or more youth events, Amateurs can
do the same for $22- per class or $220- for
10 or more classes. Both are on a one horse /
one rider combination and do not apply to
Open classes, Futurities, cattle hire or Teams
events.
• LATE ENTRY – PHAA have amended their
late entry policy. Classes may be late entered
up until 5pm the evening before the class is to
be held. Class entry fee will be the same ($17-
/ $22- / $25- as appropriate) with a flat $50-
late entry lodgement fee, regardless of the
number of classes being entered late. This fee
will apply each time you wish to call by the
Show Office and lodge late entries, so it will
pay to sort out your late entries in one go. The
proviso is that there were already 2 or more
horses that had entered, by the due date, into
the class you wish to late enter.
• REFUNDS – Please make yourself familiar
with the refund policy, for the unfortunate
circumstance that you have to withdraw from
the show.
All refund requests are considered by the
PHAA Board of Directors at the first available
meeting after the National Show. All requests
for refunds must be submitted on the PHAA
Refund Request Form and must be lodged
with the Show Office during the Show or at
the PHAA within 5 days after the last day of
showing. No refund requests will be
considered after 5 days after the last day of
showing.
Only horses that have been scratched from a
class with the Show Office prior to the event/s
will be eligible for a refund. Refunds will only
be considered if furnished with a veterinary
certificate stating that the horse that was
entered was unfit to compete in the specified
events OR a doctors medical certificate
stating that the exhibitor nominated was unfit
to attend the show or exhibit the horse in the
specified event. In all cases an administration
fee will be retained. If a refund is approved a
cheque will be mailed or credit given to the
exhibitor within 30 days of the Board Meeting
at which the refund was approved.
Cancellation by telephone will not be
accepted. Insurance and Administration fee
will not be refunded. Stabling will not be
refunded if PHAA was unable to reallocate the
stable/s.
• SHOW INFORMATION BOOKLET – To assist
make your show more comfortable we have
devised a booklet full of useful information
regarding your show entries, rules, camping &
stabling information and Dubbo Showground
information and policies. Every competitor
will receive a copy with their return tax invoice
when paying entry fees.
• EMERGENCY CONTACT CARDS – Once
again we will provide emergency contact
cards in every show bag. Please use these
cards. They are designed to be affixed to the
front of your horses stable and have the
information that can be used to contact you
should someone find your horse to be in
trouble.

designated period of time in order to score the greatest number of points
The Course: The rider will be able to choose their own direction and
sequence to negotiate each of the obstacles. There will be approximately 8
obstacles.
Scoring: Each obstacle will be assigned a point value. If the rider completes
the obstacle, those points will be added to the overall score. One obstacle
will be designated as "The Joker". This obstacle will be so designed as to
allow the competitor a choice of negotiation and degree of difficulty. This
obstacle will have 2 point values, one for completing at the higher degree of
difficulty and a lesser point value for completing at the lower degree of
difficulty.
Timing: There will be a designated start / finish line. The rider will be given
a 30 second warning prior to the allotted time. When time is called the rider
must ride across the finish line. If the rider is involved in an obstacle as time
is called, the rider my elect to complete that obstacle and if successful will
receive points for that obstacle the rider must then cross the finish line. If
the rider is just approaching the an obstacle when time is called , no points
will be awarded for that obstacle regardless of the completion of that
obstacle.
If the rider has time remaining after attempting all of the obstacles, the rider
may increase their score by repeating any obstacle again as long as it is not
disrupted or knocked over . The rider may not do the same obstacle back to
back unless it is the only obstacle left that is not considered dead (see
below).
Dead Obstacle: If the horse or rider knocks down any portion of the
obstacle, it will be considered dead, thus the rider may not repeat this
obstacle. Also if a horse hits a pole or portion of the obstacle and it is
severely disrupted, the obstacle is considered dead. Tipping or gently
knocking an obstacle not causing it to be dislodged will not be cause for
penalty.
Credit: Credit will be given as long as the horse completes the obstacle, the
gait the obstacle was commenced in must be maintained throughout the
obstacle however switching leads is acceptable. Some obstacles may have
points available by completing the obstacle with a higher degree of difficulty.
Any bonus points will be clearly marked on the pattern.
Faults: If a horse steps out of an obstacle (i.e .back-through or box), a zero
score for this attempt will be given and the rider should move on. However,
the obstacle will not be considered dead.
Equipment: No Training equipment is permitted. Equipment must be in line
with normal Trail Class tack. Exceptions - Protective leg wraps/boots are
acceptable, horses may be ridden in a bridle or snaffle regardless of age,
however rein handling must appropriate to the bit / headgear used.
Attire: Up to twenty bonus points are available for costume. Costumes must
be deemed to be safe and appropriate.
Ties: Ties will be nominated from the highest point earning obstacle down.
In the event of there still being a tie after all obstacles are considered the
score for costume shall be considered.
This event should prove to be quite a crowd pleaser. If you have concerns
about safety – remember – the horse must complete the obstacle without
causing it to be severely disturbed – so even though time is a factor,
destroying obstacles will severely limit the opportunities the competitor has
for gaining additional points through out the course.

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND PAINT HORSE CLUB - by Cynthia Anning
Our Club ran a circuit for all breeds on 17th September 2006. This was the first of five shows for the
season ending with a show on 27th May 2007. High Points for Youth, Amateur Owner, Junior
Performance Horse and Senior Performance Horse can accumulate from the five shows. The
winners will recieve their awards at the end of the May show.
All our shows are now PHAA Approved which means the
results are sent to head office without the hassle of filling out
point sheets. Entry forms have a space for horse rego
numbers and PHAA owner’s and riders membership
number. This is the only paperwork that has to be
completed at the shows.

Can you imagine a freezing cold winter in the Arizona
desert? In a pipe yard in transit, is a hairy as a goat
palomino Paint mare. My darling wife walks past
hesitates and says to me, "We should take a closer look
at that mare, ummm we should take her home" Your
kidding I thought, have a look at it , I think that’s how
it went, but me being the obliging husband I am, "Yes
dear" I said. Sooner than you know it "Honey-Lou"
arrives in Australia in Dubbo in a desert in a freezing
winter not much different really, just a lot further south.
2005-2006 High Point AWARDS...
Traveling didn’t do her the world of good, so much feed and a whole
bunch of grooming, lots of TLC and cuddles and we have turned
this mare into a true Champion. It has been a privilege not only to
show this mare but to share the fun of her with everyone, - she
has a great personality and just loves attention! Our show package
is now complete after winning the High Point Halter Horse and the
High Point Amateur Halter Horse. The Halters that we were
presented with, made by the one and only Ty Granger, are made
with the very best of craftsmanship and are a valued asset to our
show tack. We would like to sincerely thank Ty and Caron for their
generosity in sponsorship of these awards.

Burkes First To Rumble...
I was absolutely delighted to win High Point Paint Bred Halter
Horse Of Australia with ‘Burkes First To Rumble’.
I have had the time of my life showing "Fruity" she’s a lot of fun and keeps
me on my toes, she’s been a great a filly for me representing the Paint
Breds and also doing really well in Dun Horse competition - promoting
the PHAA in every direction. I really love showing paint breds, they are so
easy to keep clean! and best of all they look awesome in Open Futurities
amongst the other breeds. Its great that there are so many classes for our
Paint Breds now so don’t be fooled by that elusive white patch, if it isn’t
there you still have an outstanding horse to show and a lot of fun doing it!

Wizz’s Ringer...
His papers say the that Thornton's own him, but he
believes he is David Egan's horse. You only need to see
Wizz's Ringer when David comes to visit him after his
showing is finished and he is back at home with us for
the breeding season. He comes straight up for some
male bonding time.
Little wonder they have been so successful together. He is a great
horse to be around. His babies are the same. Just gorgeous, friendly
and inquisitive like their dad.

I Am Just Charming...

I"Drover" is a special horse in that he is very trainable
and always tries to please. He has character and can be
naughty to catch. The win was special because I have
won more with Drover than with any other horse. I have
gone from being 'not good enough' to compete to being
a National Champion.
He has achieved more in Dressage than any other horse I have owned.
He is very versatile and competes in all classes but most of our
training is in Dressage. He is an ordinary horse to look at and not the
"type" expected to achieve. His special nature carries him through.
The win is also special because he had been broken in and worked 6
weeks and been turned out for some time before I got him.
I have done all the training myself.
Better known to those who love her as “Milly”, this stunning
girl has already done well since coming to live in Maleny,
Queensland as a yearling!! Milly was broken in by Clair
Drain and had about 10 weeks work before heading home
to continue training with me.
Being the first 2 year old I have trained and shown, she has tried really
hard with what I call considerable patience for a baby. She did not have
the confidence of a professional trainer to help her along, so the Hi Point
result is fantastic for this special filly. Milly endured soreness and fatigue
(growing pains) and gave me her best under the circumstances! Her
versatility does not cease to amaze me. Thanks to all my friends who gave
me encouragement and urged me to stick out the daunting 2 year old
year!!! In her first ridden year she has fulfilled every wish I had for her.

Half A Chance...
I have been asked to write this small article on why winning
High point Youth of Australia is so important to me…
I came to a cross roads and pondered for a while over how to approach this.
Eventually, I came to the conclusion that winning this award is only the icing
on the cake… whereas if I didn’t win it, I would still have a cake, but just not
with finishing touches. Although it is nice to have an accolade such as this
that I have always wanted to win to finish off my youth years, what I am
really appreciative of, is the people that have helped me grow as a competitor
and a person but mostly, the life long friendships I have formed along the
way. So thank you to the PHAA for recognising achievements such as this,
thank you so much to the people around me that helped me get to this point
and most of all thank you and congratulations to every single horse and
rider that I have competed against over the last twelve months.

Natans Lucky Trail...
Congratulations Skip, you really are 15 years
young and even after having 10 years off under
saddle you still showed you have what it takes.
You've been the topic of many a school project/show and
tell, raced barrels, haltered against all those pretty young
fillies/mares (yes we noticed your silent protest of the ears
straight back), hacked, then the next minute hunted, and
brought us to tears on several occasions because of the
happiness you have given us.
We are very proud to be part of your life. Thank you so
much to Claire Geri for all her hard work, it was a great
effort for your first year in the western world.
I had a lot of fun winning this award. I left my fulltime
employment in March this year and started my own business,
which meant I could pick my own hours.
So for the first time, I actually had time, to work Lucky and get him fit.
I hadn’t realised I was in the running to win this award, until my husband
pointed it out to me a few months before the show season ended.It was
then that we decided to maybe get a little bit serious, because up to this
point Lucky and I were just having fun and mucking around. Also, this was
Lucky’s last year as a junior horse. Lucky was bred by Jim Hudson and then
bought by me as a yearling. Lucky is by the great Fire Trail and out of
Bandits Misty. How lucky I was, to have picked Lucky that day (he,he).
I would like to thank Jim Hudson for selling Lucky to me and for giving him
such a great start in life. I need to thank my husband Jeff, for being
extremely encouraging and so very supportive. I would like to thank the
PHAA for being a great club, and Ty Granger for his generous donation.

Hello again from your Youth Director, the Christmas
Holidays are upon us giving you the opportunity to spend
some more time doing the fun things that you like, maybe
even riding your Paint horse a little extra. You may even
like to help your Mum or Dad around the house in
appreciation for how they have helped you over the past
year. You may also have some time to do some other
exciting things like –
PHAA YOUTH ART COMPETITION.
Submit any creative thing that you would call art, photos, models,
pictures or paintings.
There will be two categories Junior Youth and Senior Youth, all
contestants art will be judged on display in our PHAA Youth tent at
the 2007 National Show Dubbo NSW. Send your creation to the
PHAA Office P.O. Box 1008 Dubbo NSW 2830 or bring it along with
you when you come to the National Show. If you would like any
further information please contact myself.
YOUTH INCENTIVE SIRES CLASSIC
This event has been well supported and looks to be an asset to our
2007 National Show program as well as raising money for our
PHAA Youth. If you know any of these stallion owners you might
like to say g’day and thank them for their commitment. We will be
looking forward to see the first YISC Weanling Futurity Event
conducted and I will be asking our Youth President, Kristy Trigg to
present the prize money and garland to the successful winner.
LOAN HORSES FOR NEW ZEALAND YOUTH TEAM
It is only a few months away to our 2007 National Show, we are
expecting a New Zealand Youth Team to come and compete at our
show so I encourage all youth that intend on competing at the 2007
National Show to get together and form some youth teams for the
2007 Youth Teams Challenge, the more the merrier. For further
information, please contact myself. Also guidelines for the Youth
Teams Challenge will be listed in this journal. PHAA will be looking
for horses for the New Zealand Team to borrow to compete in the
Youth Teams events. Please, if you know of any horse that may be
available or know of anyone who may be able to help, give me a call.
It is important that we put together a team of horses for the visiting
New Zealand youth as soon as we can.
PHAA LIBRARY
Thanks to the Youth Development Fund that was established 2
years ago, we will be starting a PHAA Youth Library, in the near
future we will be purchasing books or CD’s of educational and
informative value for our youth to loan. The PHAA Amateurs will
also be able to use this service for a small charge, anyone who may
have items which they think may be beneficial we would willingly
accept them.
ITS ADIOS AMIGOS FOR FELICITY FORSYTH
Felicity Forsyth has been the PHAA Youth President for the previous
2 years and has represented Australia for the PHAA Youth on
several occasions, don’t worry Felicity will still be with us at the
PHAA but she has matured to an age where she is no longer eligible
to compete as a youth. I’m sure Felicity will be a force to be
reckoned with in the Open competition and one day I look forward
to competing alongside her. All the best from the PHAA Youth.

PROSPECTIVE
Youth Team Managers...
If you are interested in applying for the position of Team
Manager accompanying our PHAA Youth Team to attend the
2008 Youth World Games at Fort Worth Dallas Texas, USA, please read on.
Here are the expectations and the requirements of Team Managers.
Minimum of 2 team managers to take responsibility of entire Youth Team.
• Managers must be over 30 years of age.
• Managers must nominate themselves for approval by
the Board (Notices calling for nominations will appear
in the Paint Horse Journal towards the end of 2007).
• Managers must be financial members of the PHAA at
the time of the trip and for at least the 2 years prior.
• Suitable applicants submissions will be presented to
the youth for their consideration and comment.
• The final assessment is to be made by the
PHAA Board.
• Managers airfares and accommodation will be paid
for by the PHAA Youth Trip fund raising, as will
team hire vehicle.
• All other expensed incurred by the Managers are the
responsibility of the Managers.
• Managers must be willing to drive a vehicle for the
Youth Team and previous experience driving in the
USA would be an asset.
• Managers are responsible for the organization of the
Team activities, World Show entries and Team
itinerary prior to the Team leaving. Activities and
itinerary must be approved by the PHAA Board.
• Itinerary should include away from World Show
activities such as Ranch Tours.
• Managers are responsible for ensuring that the Youth
Team members attend all appropriate events, activities
and meetings required at the World Show.
• Potential Team Managers are expected to develop a
rapport with PHAA Youth and it would be
advantageous to participate and encourage PHAA
Youth in the PHAA approved activities (for example
PHAA Youth Camp, National Show Teams Ride or
liaise with the New Zealand Youth Team attending the
National Show).
• Applicants will be required to undertake an
appropriate "Working with children" check.
• Parents of Youth can accompany them on the trip, but
not be a part of the official group or be involved in the
management of the team.

Natans Dixie
9/8/04 – 31/10/06
It is with great sadness that I announce the tragic loss of Dixie.
Dixie was struck down in a freak lightening storm on the 31/10/06.
This outstanding filly had only just began what promised to be a
successfully show career. In one year Dixie was a PHAA National
Champion – Leadtrail, Reserve Honour roll Leadtrial, ROM leadtrail,
Only _ point of her ROM in Halter and as a yearling helped Tammy
achieve her ROM in Amateur Showmanship.
But so much more from her career was her amazing personality, her
willingness to please and playful antics which made her one of a kind.
She will forever be a champion and a best friend that will never be
forgotten.
GOODBYE MY SWEET AND THANK YOU
FOR EVERYTHING.

Last issue you read a little about how wonderful our team was, our
achievements and some of our antics.This issue we have put together
a diary of events, this will give you some insight as to how busy the team can
be. When you account for each day and each hour, there is little time to spare
some days. Our girls were so well organised and articulate in what they did
that everything moved along quite well - even on the high pressure days.

• Tuesday June 20th 2006 – Team
Members, Managers and Supporters
met up at Sydney International Airport
to depart for Los Angeles. A few tearful
good byes and we were on our way.
Not too scattered through out the
plane, but far enough so that we would
get up and walk around a little to talk
to each other. Poor Kristy – she had to
sit next to a new baby all the way – lots
of squeaks and crying and some not so
pleasant smells from the baby! After
our 14 hour flight we arrived in LA to
clear immigration and transfer to
Dallas / Fort Worth (DFW). Here
Desrae & Steve Gant left us so that
they could adventure on up to Las
Vegas for a few days. A little mix up
with the domestic flight left Des &
Joan Biss (Lisa & Rebecca Gants
Grandparents) to be put onto a
different flight to DFW than the rest of
us. Next obstacle, to get everyone and
their luggage into the 2 hire cars, then
out of the rental car section of the
airport and straight onto the freeway!
Eventually we all arrived at our motel
in Fort Worth, really tired but all really
excited. We all had dinner at Cousins
BBQ located directly behind the motel
and a reasonably early night.
• Wednesday June 21st – had been set
aside for some serious Western Store
Shopping and some brain-storming for
our Parade of Teams. As Lee Ann was
very ill and had to spend the day in
bed, Jeffrey took the girls to Walmart
instead, to purchase the props and
materials for the Parade of Teams. And
a detour to Cavendars Western Store of
course. Having decided on a giant
green and gold longhorn cow for the
parade, Jeffrey & the girls arrived back
at the motel with loads of materials,
spray paint, pompoms, pool noodles
(for horns), a sewing machine and a
beautiful bunch of flowers for Lee
Ann. The rest of the day was spent in
Jeffrey & Lee Ann’s room drawing,
cutting and sewing, then modelling and
adjusting, then out to the car park to
spray paint the cow. Job well done!

• Thursday June 22nd – Over to the
World Show grounds to familiarise the
team with the arenas and various other
areas they will need to find their way

around and then a drive up to Justin to
the Justin Boot Outlet and Chute 1 for
some shopping and to buy any last
minute boots, hats or clothing that may
be required for the World Show. After
several hours of shopping we had late
lunch at Mom’s Café and then back to
Fort Worth and down to the Historic
Stockyards district for some sightseeing.
Back to the motel to practice with the
Dancing Cow and brush up on some
Hippology study.
• Friday June 23rd – The team went out to
Wilson Ranch in Tolar, Texas, about 40
minutes from our motel. Riding a cutting
horse on a mechanical cow, checking out
the 70 horses that are there and riding a
various work stations placing their
answers. As each finished it was "I went
hopeless – It was hard" little did they
know just how well they went! All over
by around 1.30 so off to get some lunch,
watch some horses training and then to

between the Team had some time off to
look around the stables and socialising

and you can be assured that the Aussies

tiring time for the team, but a whole lot
of fun. Back to the motel to have a
practice session with the dancing cow,
more Hippology study and then to
freshen up before the AjPHA Year End
Awards Banquet and AjPHA Dance
where Kristy & Felicity were able to
meet some of the Youth they had met on
their previous trip and to introduce
Alex, Lisa and Rebecca.
• Saturday June 24th – Cramming session
for the Hippology contest that was
starting at 11am in the Texas Room at
the grounds. We had 5 nervous girls
waiting their turn to go through the

there – after a bit of encouragement
from the Team Managers! The relay is a
fun event that is taken very seriously by
the Teams, involving some rather
unusual antics that demonstrate just how
well you can work together as a team –
almost like an on foot obstacle course
with all team members tied together by
the ankles! Very challenging and quite a
laugh – with several trail obstacles,
roping a plastic steer, saddling a model
horse and answering questions along the
way. What a hoot! Followed by a great
Mexican feed that night with the Wilson
Family and friends at Dos Gringos.
• Sunday June 25th – Open World Show

so much to look at. We all watched some of the Youth
Showmanship preliminaries then went shopping at
Sheplers and Cavendars, back to the grounds for the
Team to watch some Youth Western Pleasure then the
Team & Managers attend the Coaches Meeting and
welcome reception at Mercado Juarez Mexican
Restaurant.
• Monday June 26th – Early morning surprise – today
Rebecca discovered that she was to compete in the
Youth Teams Tournament – she was so surprised. A
commitment was given to the rest of the Team that the
Team Managers would do everything they could to find
horses for them so that they too could compete in the
YTT Performance events. An all day trip for the visiting
Youth Teams to Six Flags Amusement Park, fully
supervised and organised by APHA. Perfect time for the
Team Managers to finish off the YTT horse search,
entries and paperwork. Five very happy but very tired
girls at the end of that day!
• Tuesday June 27th – APHA had once again organised
activities for the visiting teams, this time all supporters
could come along as well. First up breakfast in the John
Justin arena – a variety doughnuts and "pigs in blankets"
(little frankfurts rolled into sweet pastry). And of course
there was Vegemite being shared around – much to the
pleasure and disgust in some cases of the other
Internationals. Two buses were used to ferry us all around
to Fossil Gate Farms, Valor Farm Thoroughbred Stud and
a fun lunch hosted by Pat & Nancy Trebesch in their own
home. We also called by a Training establishment shared
by Arturo Maestra, Pat Trebesch and Charlie Cole and
were given some tuition in Showmanship and
Horsemanship by Arturo Maestra, a top trainer of Paints,
Quarter Horses and Appaloosa Horses.
By today, horses had been organised for each of our
Team, how surprised they were to find out they would
be competing in the YTT Performance events and keen
to get back to practice! Now they need to find the gear
that they will need.
• Wednesday June 28th – All competitors in the Youth
World Games met at the Watt Arena for the drawing of
horses for teams. There are 4 sections in the Youth World
Games – Showmanship, Horsemanship, Reining & Trail.
Horses are drawn from a hat and you are not guaranteed
to get a horse that specialises in the event allocated, there
were 3 horses per team so there was to be some sharing.
We drew some pretty nice horses. A short time was then
allocated for each competitor to have some practice time

with their horse, most were
accompanied by their owners or
trainers – so that was quite a help. After
the practice session is over you can not
go near the horse again before the
events start. Later that day we were
able to practice with some of the horses
we had borrowed for the YTT and to
lend a hand to the owners that had so
kindly loaned their horses to our team.
The next day was to be the Youth
Teams Tournament, immediately
followed by the Youth World Games.
Even though we couldn’t go near the
World Games horses, we did have to
prepare the YTT horses for the next
day. So today had been one very busy
day! Back to the motel and Jeffrey had
to madly sew, making alterations to
some of the new clothes the girls had
purchased to wear in the World Show.
• Thursday June 29th – The big day has
arrived. 2pm start for the YTT, so it was
off to the wash bays for some last
minute clean ups and one horse left to
wash and band. We had 5 youth
competing in 8 different events on 7
different horses, 4 horses which we had
to prepare and 3 we were not allowed
to go near. As well as this we had gear
to organise for each event – English,
Western & Speed – so there was a lot to
put together with clothes and tack,
coupled with our costumes and props
for the Parade Of Teams. All in order of
use so that nothing would be messed
up – and of course cleaning gear for
horse, rider and tack. Some horses were
in back to back events with gear
changes required. We had ran through
our plans several times. The events
began and before we knew it they were
over – we were kept so busy time just
flew by. Then we had to get the gear
and horses away, get changed into our
Parade costumes and strut our stuff in
the arena! I don’t know how we would
have survived without the help of
Ryan & Sandy Read, Gail Mitchell,
Tracey King and the Wilson Family.
Presentation of awards was
immediately after the Parade of Teams,
with the Team and Managers already
on a high and our Supporters cheering
in the stands we were just beaming as
the awards were called out. With the
success we had in the individual events
and our fantastic parade, we were over
the moon to finish 5th overall in the
Youth Teams Tournament . Though we
weren’t as successful in the World
Games we still had some credible
performances and were proud of what
we had achieved. AjPHA then hosted a
party, complete with cake and gift
exchange between International
visitors. Finishing back in the motel
exhausted at about 2am.
• Friday June 30th – Sleep in! Day off for
everyone after our very busy day. Team,
Managers and Supporters headed
Longhorn Cattle Drive.
North to Aubrey & Pilot Point for a
leisurely day of shopping – Sergeants,
Smith Brothers, Paul Taylors and
Fosters Western Wear – lunch at
Subway, dinner at one of the premier
Mexican Restaurants – Joe T Garcias
with 2006 PHAA National Show Judge
– Dale Barnett.
• Saturday July 1st – A day of watching
World Show events including the
World Show Sale. Events for the day
included Trail, Utility Driving and
Reining. Time was also spent helping
the Wilson’s with their horses and
cleaning stalls. Then off to Mesquite for
the Indoor Rodeo. Another late finish.
• Sunday July 2nd – The Team headed
off to Wilson Ranch for a day of
mustering in the brush, there seemed
to be horses, saddles and riders
everywhere! A very hot Texas summers
day did not deter our enthusiastic girls.
The mustering got a little wild and
woolly at times, but all had a lot of fun.
Then back to the grounds to watch
some Western Pleasure finals and
preliminary runs.
• Monday July 3rd – Down to World
Show in the morning to watch some
Halter & Hunter Hack classes, then
down to the Historic Stockyards to see
the Longhorn Cattle drive. You have
never seen cattle with horns like these
steers – they command a lot of room.
Back to the World Show to watch the
finals of the Senior Western Riding,
Senior Pleasure Driving and Junior
Western Pleasure and to see Come Get
Ya Some win World Champion Jnr
Western Pleasure after placing 1st
under all 5 judges – this horse (owned
by Ron Shelly) has been trained by
Earnest Wilson and was ridden by
Randy Wilson. Hot Lips Cookie ridden
by Mike Hatchel coming in 2nd under
all 5 judges. The crowd went absolutely
crazy.

• Tuesday July 4th – Independence Day.
Most of the day was spent at World
Show watching some of the events
(mainly Halter and Hunter Under
Saddle) then a party for all International
visitors hosted by APHA in the
afternoon. Good time to catch up with
some old acquaintances and reinforce
Australia’s standing in the World scene.
Now, how to spend July 4th? Why not
at Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic
concert down at the Historic
Stockyards. What an eye-opener that
was. Aside from Willie Nelson there
were 20 or so other artists including
Kris Kristofferson, Shooter Jennings,
Ray Price, David Allan Coe & The Nitty
Gritty Dirt Band. A rather aged
audience of definite Willie Nelson fans
– a little daunting to the girls to see so
many old hippies in one place –
educational maybe? Later in the
evening the fireworks all around were
just great, you would be looking up in
the sky one direction and then the other
trying to keep up with them all.
• Wednesday July 5th – Back up to Justin
for Team, Managers & Supporters for
some more shopping. A visit to APHA
with a tour of the Headquarters. APHA
are always so obliging with our Teams,
showing them around the office
building and the various departments,
explaining how they operate. We then
had lunch at Shady Oaks BBQ – it must
be the only place in the World where it
can be 100 degrees outside and they
have it so cold inside that they have a
fire blazing away. Then back to World
Show (with very full tummies) to
watch the Aged Mares Halter, Finals of
the Junior Hunter Under Saddle, 2 Year
Old Mares Halter and the Final of the
2YO Western Pleasure.
• Thursday July 6th – A visit to Fossil
Gate Farms (Gary & Linda Gordon) for
the Team, Managers and Supporters.
Gary & Linda were fantastic to our
Team, making us most welcome. After
drooling over their beautiful halter
horses (Paint & Quarter Horse), a little
more shopping at the stores not too far
from Fossil Gate Farms (Smith Bros &
Sergeants) it was back to the World
Show to watch some of the Amateur
Owner Showmanship. We had been
invited by Gail Mitchell to a party that
evening. We were told to look for the
Tennessee Flag – luckily it was the only
flag flying! But at least we all know
what the Tennessee flag looks like now.
Everyone was so kind to our Team,
making them feel welcome and wanting
to talk to each of us. And the food –
they certainly had some good cooks
amongst them.
• Friday July 7th – Back to World Show
to watch some more events – Cutting,
Western Pleasure and Reining. Over to
Uncle Julio’s for lunch – yes – more
Mexican Food, but it is really good
there. You would not believe that you
could be on the other side of the World,
go to a Mexican Restaurant and see a
kangaroo? Someone had a pet kangaroo
in a bag on their belly in the restaurant!
After eating far too much food we
headed back to the World Show to
watch the finals of the Senior Hunter
Under Saddle, Yearling Mares, Senior
Western Pleasure and the preliminary of
the Western Pleasure Challenge.
• Saturday July 8th – Last day of World
Show, everyone is starting to wind
down and some are beginning to feel a
bit homesick now. A quick dash over to
Cavendars then down to World Show.
You really can’t miss a thing on the last
day – and of course it is the last day of
the Trade Show – can’t miss out on that
either! The closing ceremony of World
Show is unbelievable, with the finals of
the Reining Challenge, Western
Pleasure Challenge, Aged Stallions,
Colour Classes, the High Point
presentations under spotlights, mini
movies on the big screen, Team Penning
Sweepstakes and the Freestyle Reining
– all to a full house of around 3000
people the adrenalin just keeps
pumping. When it is all over it is a very
sad moment to walk out and say good
bye to the new friends that you have
made and your long term friends – until
another visit.
• Sunday July 9th – no sleeping in for this
team. We have a trip to The Alamo
planned and that is about a 4 hour
drive. 6am start and off we head for San
Antonio, calling in to "tube the river" on
the Guadalupe River at Gruene. It was
a hot and humid day, just perfect for
jumping on a tube and floating down
the river – with some splashing and
dunking along the way. After a late
lunch we continued further south until
we got to San Antonio and The Alamo.
An area that is rich in Texan history. A
boat ride on the river pointing out the
spots of interest and the 100’s of cafes
and shops along the way, then back
home to the motel. Stopping at an Irish
Pub at about 11pm for dinner and back
at the motel at 1.30am

• Monday July 10th – our last day before
we leave for Australia. The host of the
APHA tour lunch had kindly offered to
give our Team and Supporters a
personal tour of some of his friends’
ranches – we weren’t going to miss
that. Meeting up at Sergeants (another
excuse to shop) We went to Simmons
Show Horses and were privileged to
see Zippo’s Sensation (Current #1
Performance sire), McQuay
Performance Horses – home to
Hollywood Dunnit (decd), here we all
got to meet the infamous "Gunner"
Colonels Smoking Gun and the many
other beautiful reining stallions.
Another stop was Ted Turners Halter
Horses – absolutely immaculate lawn,
drive, gardens, barn and horses as are
most of the ranches we had seen on our
trip. Now it was back to the motel to
start our packing. Over to Target to buy
some scales so that we could weigh our
luggage.
• Tuesday July 11th – time to go home.
Packing to go home was probably the
biggest challenge anyone on the trip
had faced. It is amazing the amount of
paper, cardboard and plastic you
accumulate on your shopping trips. The
motels trash rooms were bursting when
we had finished. We needed to order a
taxi bus to help us get to the airport,
this is in addition to 3 vans we already
had hired. Sort out luggage, people and
more luggage then head off to the
airport. What a shemozzle that was.
People everywhere, we all had too
many bags and we did shuttles up to
the check in and back from our drop
off zone while the boys returned the
hire cars. It takes 4 hours to get from
motel to the other side of check in, 3
and a half of which are at the airport.
Once we were all safely checked in it
was time to relax, reminisce and have a
much deserved Starbucks coffee before
our flight to LA. 3 hours later we are in
LA, all exhausted and waiting for our
next flight – the long one to Sydney.
Back in Sydney, a few mix ups with
bags with the people continuing on to
Brisbane, some sad good byes and we
all headed to our own homes to dream
about our next trip to APHA World
Show.
