President’s Report 

Hello once again, 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 

past PHAA Board of Directors and office staff for 

the results achieved in the 2011 Financial Year, with 

an operating profit of around $63,000. Major factors 

that contributed to this result increase in membership 

income of $29,000 from the previous year, which tells 

me that people are enthusiastic about being involved 

with the PHAA again. We have also had an increase in 

approved shows and the purchase of PHAA Official 

Points Score Books, which indicates members are 

showing their horses more than the previous year. 

There was also some cost saving efficiencies implemented 

and of course as any business would normally 

do, there will be focus on efficient quality customer 

service for the future. 

The Paint Horse Association of Australia is an Association 

formed for the betterment of our Paint Horse 

and our members, the expected management of the 

Association is the responsibility of volunteer Directors 

and the employed office staff. I would like you to consider 

where you, the member, can make a difference 

for our Association. There is unlimited opportunity to 

help a fellow member. It doesn’t have to be something 

big, it can be as little as just saying hello how are you 

going. Through our attitude we can sometimes make 

a difference to another member and not even know 

it. There is no one that I know that does not want to 

have a good time when we meet with our horses.

to attend. There are minimum requirements that are 

needed to conduct a Horse Show of this size and really 

only two facilities that are central to the PHAA 

Membership, Sydney International Equestrian Complex 

and AELEC. With the current pricing structure 

AELEC is still slightly cheaper than SIEC. At the end 

of the day the PHAA need to pay costs to cover the 

event and these costs are met by the income received 

from the members participating at the show and this 

is why the PHAA has to charge what it does to run 

the National Show. 

I welcome Lisa Day to the PHAA Board of Directors. 

Lisa was nominated from the floor and voted in by 

the members at the 2012 Annual General Meeting to 

fill a vacancy for the Vic, Tas, SA and WA area. I look 

forward to working with Lisa and the other current 

BOD Members. Looking towards the next twelve 

months there is more work to be done to maintain 

the Association and put structure in place for the 

future growth and sustainability of our Association.

The PHAA have just conducted the 2012 National 

Show at the Australian Equine and Livestock Exhibition 

Centre Tamworth NSW and the show attracted approximately 

200 horses. Thank you to all that contributed 

to the running of the show, as it ran very 

well, with plenty of time allocated for competitors to 

enjoy their showing experience, as well as fundraising 

events that were well supported. Thank you to the 

sponsors that supported the event, – through your 

assistance and commitment it made a great deal of 

difference to our competitors. We look forward to 

supporting the PHAA National Show Sponsors where 

possible in the future and making it a worthwhile 

venture for you to be involved. 

On occasion I have read some posts on the PHAA 

Facebook expressing concerns about the cost to the 

competitor to attend the PHAA National Show. For 

members information the PHAA has always tried to 

provide an opportunity, to all members of different

Immediate and proposed Rule Changes 

Proposed Rule Changes 

Comment is invited from members on the following proposed 

rule changes. All comments and feedback received will be considered 

by the Board prior to ratifying, amending or rejecting all 

proposed rule changes. This will occur at the last meeting prior 

to the 1st August, 2012 If ratified by the Board, these rule 

changes will become effective from 1st August, 2012. 

Rule 11 to be amended to replace the words “It will be 

mandatory’ with “It is strongly recommended”. 

Add to Rule 11 the following 

(a) The PHAA may conduct random drug tests at PHAA 

approved shows. 

Rule changes proposed at BOD meeting October, 2011. 

Amend Rule 237 Amateur Activity Program 

Rule 237 paragraph one. Delete: 

“All horses shown in amateur classes must be registered with 

PHAA in order to obtain association points and awards effective 

29.08.04. The horse or horses used by an amateur participant 

must be owned or leased and registered wholly or in part by 

the participant and their name must appear on the horses registration 

certificate.” 

and replace with the following wording: 

“... in order to receive association points and awards. The horse 

or horses exhibited by an Amateur in Amateur Owner (including 

Novice and Masters) or Open classes, must be owned or leased 

by the contestant or by contestant’s spouse, parents, de-facto 

partner, child of the family, grandparents, brother(s) or sister(s). 

Horses owned by anyone other than listed above, do not fulfil 

the ownership requirements under the PHAA Amateur rule.” 

That is, new paragraph one to read: 

“Only current financial members are eligible for PHAA amateur 

status. All exhibitors in amateur classes are required to hold a 

PHAA amateur card. All horses shown in amateur classes must 

be registered with the PHAA in order to obtain association 

points and awards. The horse or horses exhibited by an Amateur 

in Amateur Owner (including Novice & Masters) or Open 

classes, must be owned or leased by the contestant or by contestant’s 

spouse, parents, de-facto partner, child of the family, 

grandparents, brother(s) or sister(s). Horses owned by anyone 

other than listed above, do not fulfil the ownership requirements 

under the PHAA Amateur rule. The minimum lease period for 

any horse, for any amateur competitor will be 12 months. 

Two: Remuneration restrictions (add note to last sentence) 

Please note this includes their period competing as a youth 

member where applicable.” 

Replace Amateur Qualification Rule 2. (iii) with the 

following: 

“237 - 

2 iii) Prize money is not considered remuneration. Payment of 

entry fees and expenses, by any person other than the person’s 

spouse, parents, de-facto partner, child of the family, 

grandparents, brother(s), sister (s) shall be considered remuneration.” 

Add to end of 237 (f) 

“However Amateur Owners in the same family may individually 

accumulate points on the same horse, provided points are individually 

tabulated on a one horse/one rider combination. No horse 

is to be shown by more than one contestant in any one class. 

Add to end of Rule 237 

237 “(j) Sponsorship may be received by Amateur Owners, providing 

only goods are received and not monetary payments. 

Amateurs may be required to submit details of sponsorship 

to the PHAA upon request, and must be provided within 

10 business days. 

(k) Any member ceasing to be a professional with the aim 

of applying to become an Amateur Owner, must notify the 

PHAA in writing of the date of ceasing professional activities 

as soon as practical, in order to qualify for Amateur status.” 

Further amendment proposed 7th feb 2012 BOD Meeting 

(l) In Amateur Owner Halter competition, when an Amateur 

exhibitor has qualified more than one horse for Champion and 

Reserve Champion, only another Amateur may assist that exhibitor 

as long as the Amateur who originally qualified the horses, 

leads one (1) of the horses in that class. 

(explanation: This now allows both qualifying horses owned by one 

Amateur to show for Champion and Reserve Champion) 

Explanation: These amendments to Rule 237 are being proposed on 

behalf of the Queensland AO members as a result of a unanimous 

motion from that meeting. There are several different ‘models for 

changes to PHAA AO rules being proposed (refer Sept 2011 PHJ). 

They are being proposed to remove anomalies in our current rules 

and more closely align them with the rules of other associations. All 

AO’s are invited to provide feedback on these proposed changes. 

Rule 103 Colour Requirements Paint Horse 

Reference Lines 

i) Amend Reference Line 2 to read. A level line around the leg at 

the centre of the knee [the centre of the knee is determined by 

using the bony protrusion on the back of the knee as the starting 

point and drawing a level line horizontally around the knee] 

Explanation: Currently the reference line of the knee is at the top of 

the knee joint. This Rule change is to revert back to the original reference 

line at the centre of the knee used by the Association for nearly 

30 years prior to the current reference line 2. More horses will qualify 

for registration & the reference line 2 would then mirror the reference 

line of the knee used by the APHA. At the moment a horse can be eligible 

for Regular registration with the APHA & be only eligible for the 

Paint Bred Registry with the PHAA. 

Amend Rule 115 Listing Of AQHA & Australian Stud 

Book Registered Horses: 

(a) Stallions registered with the ASB & AQHA, must be listed 

with the PHAA prior to breeding. Stallions registered with 

the AmQHA or other Association recognised by the AmQHA 

are required to be listed with the PHAA prior to the registration 

of their foals. 

From 1st August 2012 a penalty fee of $50 will be imposed on 

QH & ASB stallions not listed with the PHAA prior to breeding. 

Explanation: The PHAA require all Quarter Horse and Australian Stud 

Book Registered Horse to be listed. Over the past years the PHAA 

have received registration applications for horses Sired by Quarter 

Horses and Australian Stud Book Registered Horses that have not 

been listed with the PHAA. To assist with the efficient administration 

of Registration Applications(having the appropriate information for 

the Sire on file) The Stallion Owners who do not do the right thing 

will incur a penalty fee. This penalty fee would compensate the PHAA 

Office for time and effort needed to obtain the information required. 

Immediate rule change Rule 112 add 

(f) When a registered AQHA or ASB stallion is eligible for dual 

registration with the PHAA it need not be upgraded for 

breeding purposes with the PHAA but must be listed with 

the Association prior to breeding. 

Explanation: A listed QH or ASB stallion satisfies the bloodline requirement 

for its resulting progeny to be eligible for registration [provided 

the Dam meets the bloodline requirement]. It is therefore not necessary 

for the stallion if it is dual Registered QH,ASB to use its Paint 

Horse registration to register its Paint Horse progeny.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY 

Highest placed Paint at Showcase in the Open Weanling Futurity. 

Tony and I were thrilled with winning the belt buckle and 

also pleased with the way "Cowboy" handled his first show. 

We haven't shown a horse in five years, but when we bred this 

beautiful black and white colt by "Ford Shameless Cowboy" 

we knew we had 

something special 

with a temperament 

to match. We have 

huge plans for this 

boy in the future and 

see a successful show 

career ahead of him.

Amateur Report 

Hi to everyone 

The big news for Amateurs is the Trans Tasman Challenge, with 

New Zealand, is now on for 2013! I had a meeting with Jason 

Melling PHANZ at the National Show and plans are now well 

under way. A team of four Amateurs have been invited to compete 

at the New Zealand National Show held in March 2013. 

Date and venue are yet to be confirmed. Selection criteria will 

be set at the June Board Meeting and Amateurs will be notified 

via the website so keep a close check. 

The National Show is now over and we are into the final stages 

of the 2012 competition year. The Amateur Classes at this year’s 

National Show were very well supported and I believe the split 

classes for Junior and Senior Amateur have been a success. The 

Masters Amateur Classes were very small, however I did expect 

this to be the case for the very first year, given Masters Amateur 

was only announced to the membership in October 2011. Highest 

placed Amateur was given a $100 bonus for each of the ridden 

futurities, so bear this in mind when considering your nominations 

for next year. Lisa Day was awarded Hi Point Amateur of 

the National Show. Congratulations Lisa! 

The current Amateur List stands at 383. The number seems to 

be steadily increasing so this is a great sign for the future of the 

Amateur programs. Fifty four Masters Amateurs have signed up 

since October. 

The Novice Amateur Program has been very lightly supported and 

I believe in its current form it is not benefitting Amateurs enough 

for the extra fee. I would suggest that the Novice Amateur Program 

cease as of August 2012, however this needs to go to a Board 

Meeting for the final decision to be made. 

An Amateur Meeting was held at the National Show on May 1st at 

4pm with 12 attendees. Amateur Portfolio funding was discussed 

and a motion was moved to have 10% of the Amateur Fee transferred 

to the Amateur Account annually. There were some queries 

about fundraising for the trip to NZ, ownership clarification and 

the ability to hold another horse in Hunter in Hand classes. A 

vote was taken to delete the Novice Programme in its current 

form. All attending the meeting were in favour. A motion was also 

put to have an annual Hi Point Overall Amateur that included 

Halter and Performance. All issues raised will be put to the June 

Board Meeting. Voting of positions was deferred until the next 

meeting to be held at the Queensland State Show in July as 

there were insufficient States represented at the meeting. Minutes 

from the Amateur Meeting will be available on the website. 

Fundraising has been progressing. A clinic 

was run in March with Travis Humphries 

from TNT Training generously discounting 

his fee to enable funds to be raised for 

Amateurs while still keeping the clinic 

very affordable. 660 dollars were raised 

as a result, so a very big Thank You must 

go to TNT Training! Another clinic is 

planned for September 15th at Caboolture 

Showgrounds with both Travis and 

Natasha Humphries of TNT Training. This Shirley Sommer 

will be run in conjunction with the South 

East Queensland Paint Horse Club so book early to avoid disappointment. 

Trainers have already been approached for the 2013 

clinics to be held in Queensland next year and again I encourage 

affiliate clubs to do the same. 150 dollars are available annually to 

each affiliate club who run clinics or camps for Amateurs attending 

to assist in some small way towards costs. These funds come 

straight out of the amateur funding. 

A Fashion Parade and Auction was held at the National Show 

and 975 dollars were raised to boost Amateur funds. Thanks to 

our models Brooke Duddy, Stacey Bentley, Rhianna and Maddie 

Foster, Lisa Sylvester, Emlyn Broad, Simone Robinson, Maddison 

Lane, Nicole Lindeberg, Samatha Johnston and our NZ Team 

member Kurt. Our announcer Jan Biddle, who did an awsome 

job. Denise Duddy, Lorelie Payne, Karen Gorrie, Corina Foster, 

Helen Bentley for dressing and organising our models. To Melissa 

Carmichael of Pleasure Girl Western Wear for co-ordinating the 

whole parade. Together the team worked wonders. And finally 

to Ralph Dunn for Auctioning the items after a long tiring day 

announcing. If I have forgotten anybody I apologise. I appreciate 

all of you. Last but not least to the people who donated goods 

for auction. Pleasure Girl Western Wear (Melissa Carmichael), 

Horsemans Trading Post (Paul and Lisa Lorimer), Designs by Pelipa 

(Corina Foster), DHR Designs (Amanda Sproules), Maisy & Me 

Show Clothing (Deb Cusson). A great night was had by all! 

Please check the website for information on changes to the 

Amateur Rule as of August 1st, 2012. Final decision on these 

changes will be made at the June Board Meeting. I wish every 

one of you the joy of spending time with your Paints and look 

forward to growing and improving the Amateur Program for 

your enjoyment!

In 2012, the PHAA National futurities 

paid out in excess of $30,000 of prizemoney 

in addition to buckles and prizes. 

The prestigious Weanling futurity winner taking 

home a cheque for close to $2,300. 

The nominations for the 2013 Futurities will close on 

31st July 2013. Entry forms will be available from the 

PHAA website and office from the middle of June.

Amateur Spotlight – Rowena Wilcox 

Congratulations to Rowena and WESTERN BY DEMAND 

for winning Champion Hack at the 2012 Paint Horse Nationals. 

1.Where do you live? 

The Oaks NSW 

2.Who is your current Paint Horse? 

WESTERN BY DEMAND ... Aka Flossy! 

3. How long have you been riding Paint Horses? 

I've been riding horses for over 30 years. I brought Flossy in 

2006, so been riding Paint Horses for six years. 

4. Who was your first Paint Horse and when? 

I've only owned one Paint Horse, Flossy and brought her as a 

two year old in 2006. 

5. What is your favourite event and why? 

Traditional English Classes. Mainly because I grew up doing traditional 

English and I understand it and they are my best events! 

Saying that I do appreciate all horse disciplines. 

10. Name your most memorable achievement. 

Winning the President Shield in 1982 for Cobbitty Pony Club 

was pretty special! 

But I think the most memorable was definitely the NSW State 

Paint Championships 2009. I had lost my Thoroughbred "Rumba" 

two days before leaving for Tamworth, after battling for two 

months trying to save him. I wasn't really in a showing mood 

and Flossy really wasn't prepared, but I left for Tamworth hoping 

a few days away would cheer me up. Flossy didn't put a foot 

wrong and I swear old "Rumba" was looking over her that day. 

She was State Champion in every Hack class and was Open 

Hack Challenge winner, then went on to win Grand Champion 

Hack and I loved the "Flossy cheer squad" in the stands. Not the 

greatest achievement, but one I'll never forget. 

6. Boots, Heels or Thongs? 

Definitely boots. 

7. What couldn't you do without? 

I definitely need all my crazy, weird and beautiful animals, my 

happy friends, and a mobile with facebook access!!! 

8. What is a typical day for you? 

A week day is like groundhog day. Up at 5am, take the dogs for 

a walk, take Flossy out for an hour, then off to work – do a fair 

days work – come home and tend to my menagerie of all creatures 

great and small. Weekends are usually "anything that goes". 

9. Who inspires you within the horse industry? 

Does the Dalai Lama own a horse? 

I don't really have any following of a particular person, I prefer to 

get something useful from a range of different people, different 

ideas, different views. Steve Brady did give me my first words of 

encouragement with Flossy. Paralympians are very inspirational.

Youth Report 

At this year’s AGM, I had the honour of becoming a Director and 

am now working with Craig Dengate on the Youth Portfolio. As 

many of you saw at the Nationals, I am super excited about this 

appointment and look forward to working with and for you guys. 

I hope everyone enjoyed the Nationals and made it home safely. 

It was so much fun catching up with interstate and international 

friends. Congratulations to all those who competed in the Teams 

Challenge. You were all very entertaining and showed fantastic 

sportsmanship. 

Some highlights of the show included seeing gorgeous Brooke 

own the catwalk, Ruby finally struck gold in the Bareback, Emelyn 

jumped Tige, an amazing production team smashed out some 

much improved pancakes and we found out that Hannah sings 

like an angel. Tenielle loves Henry even more and the auction 

was very successful. 

Our Youth Meeting saw some discussions around the possibility 

of running shows and camps. The focus, as always, was to look 

for ways to raise money for the Youth Account, but this year 

there was an overwhelming amount of support for providing 

opportunities for our youth to improve and excel in the arena. 

Many trainers have been approached already in an attempt 

to get “Weekend with a Trainer” up and running as soon as 

possible. If you have a trainer you admire and 

would love to learn from, please email me at 

lday50@live.com.au and we will approach them 

on your behalf. Also, if you are a member of 

a local club and you think they would assist 

us in the running of training days, camps 

and shows, please email me the contact 

details.

IMPORTANT NOTICES REGARDING PSSM IN PAINT HORSES: 

Effective immediately, all imported horses or imported semen must be tested for PSSM 1 and any horses which 

test positive (n/p1 or p1/p1) will not be accepted into the PHAA studbook. Rule 101 c to be amended accordingly. 

As from 1st August, 2012, it will be a requirement that all PHAA registered and listed AQHA and ASB stallions have their PSSM 

status on file with the PHAA prior to the stallion upgrade or listing being accepted. All mares and currently upgraded stallions will be 

required to have their PSSM status on file with the PHAA as from 1st August, 2013. Breeding rights will be suspended after this date until 

the information is provided. Genetic test results will be accepted from accredited laboratories in Australia or the USA. Statutory declarations 

regarding hair collection may be required. Rules 112, 113 and 115 are to be amended accordingly. New Rule 111 (h) to be formulated 

regarding PSSM1 testing. Rule will effective from 1st August, 2012.

Youth President’s Report

Hey Everyone, hope you all had a great 

Nationals. I definitely had fun (especially 

in the Youth Trans Tasman Challenge) 

which QLD won. WOO!! 

I am now Youth President and keen to get 

ideas happening this year. Working with 

the new lovely Youth Director and fellow 

Queenslander, Lisa Day, will surely boost 

the momentum. We have some great plans 

and hopefully they will be ratified within 

the near future. 

I have already created a "Paint Horse Youth" Facebook Group. 

It's an open group so add yourselves if you haven't already. Also 

add your other horsey friends even if they aren't members but 

would like to be part of our fun Paint family. It will be a place to 

share your favourite horsey photos, ask any questions about riding 

exercises, suggest any fundraising ideas and show improvements, 

and also maybe advertise/find your next or first, youth horse. 

The paid warm up Trail was a success even though most youth 

were busy showing. It is definitely something to continue on to 

next year and we can only improve it from here. The Youth Auction 

raised some great funds as well, which will greatly help the 

2012 Paint Youth Trip (good luck girls), and the pancakes were 

pretty tasty. Speaking of pancakes, I will be nagging a close contact 

in the baking business to donate the pancake mix for the 2012 

State Show pancake night, and also hopefully next Nationals. 

Overall the past ideas/events were pretty good, and the future 

can only be better. One of the new ideas is to get Youth Judging 

happening at the upcoming Nationals. So look out for it in the 

next program and have a go for a bit of fun. 

Lisa and I will be discussing plenty more plans soon, so stay tuned 

to the Paint Horse Youth Facebook Group for more frequent 

updates, and we would love to hear your ideas and feedback.

ANNUAL STALLION PARADE 

On February 18 2012 the Annual Stallion 

Parade was hosted by the Tasmanian 

Arabs Society at the AGFEST site, Quercus 

Park, Carrick. Over 5000 spectators 

turned up to see the big boys strut their 

stuff. Paints were represented by 2yo 

DMB Conquistador, 3yo Yoakham Lodge 

Painted Hero and well known Superior 

all Round Paint horse, Garth Brooks. 

Vicki Hume hosted a PHAA information 

table and explained the history and beginnings 

of the paint horse. Our arena time came where Vicki spoke of the virtues 

and versatility of the paint horse while Garth displayed some of his spins and moves 

in reining.

Youth Teams Challenge 

One of the highlights of the 2012 PHAA National Show was the 

Trans-Tasman Youth Teams Challenge. Three teams competed 

including a visiting team from New Zealand “Team Kiwi”, the 

“Queensland Queens” and the “New South Wales Blues”. Events 

included in the challenge were Showmanship, English Equitation, 

Trial, Horsemanship, Youth Decathlon, a Teams Relay and Youth 

Teams ride. The competition seesawed from event to event, but 

at the end the Queensland Queens, Stacey Bentley, Emlyn Broad, 

Jaydene Urosevic and Hannah Longergan came out in front. 

The Teams Relay event consisted of various challenges set in a 

course to be completed in a minimum time. The Youth tested 

their skills at the Rope a Cone, Loaded Wheelbarrow Trail, Stick 

Horse Barrel Race, Catch a Bucket of Water, Thong (Jandals in 

New Zealand) Throwing and Giant Horse Shoe Throw. The Teams 

Relay Event was especially good fun providing an exciting event 

and a real crowd pleaser. Every one of the Youth that competed 

in the Trans-Tasman Youth Teams Challenge was a winner. The 

team spirit and camaraderie between the Youth was great to see. 

We look forwarding to continuing this event in the future and 

the PHAA wish to thank the New Zealand Team, Annalyse Blyde, 

Ellen Osborne, Lindsey Osborne, Claire Smith and Kurt Melling 

and their supporters for travelling across the Tasman and taking 

the challenge to the Aussies. We especially thank the behind the 

scenes people that contributed to the event and whatever was 

needed they made it happen. Lee Wear, David Egan and Michele 

Bruce were a great help.

From Conception to Showring 

Breeding and showing the successful lungeliner is a combination of genes, natural 

ability, training, showmanship and a little luck.

As Dominion Equine, Belinda and I started 

in Western pleasure horses in 2001, with 

the purchase of "Loocille" (sire Loots 

Image) and "Circle K Peppered Love" 

by "Burnin Love". After successfully campaigning 

these mares, we embarked on a 

breeding program using the best pleasure 

lines Australia and Amercia had to offer. 

We currently boast homebred mares by 

QH stallions "Vested Pine" (USA), "One 

Hot Krymsun" (USA), "HF Somethin Hot" 

(imp), "Cee a Barpasser" (imp), "Good 

Prophecy" (imp) and "Ten" and by Paint 

sires "Zippos Sensation" (USA) and "The 

Big Sensation" (USA). In 2009 we imported 

a 3yr QH mare by "Zippos Mr Good 

Bar" to further strengthen our band. Our 

home bred and well performed stallion 

"You Bet Im Krymsun" by "One Hot 

Krymsun" (USA) will start his stud duties 

this year and we have high hopes for his 

babies out of our OLWNeg and QH mares. 

We believe the criteria for breeding a lungeline 

prospect is the same as your western 

pleasure, pattern, trail class prospect. 

Genetics are a very big factor. Quality 

Western pleasure horse lines have several 

generations of selection for flat knee, 

sweeping hock, deep drive, level top line, 

quiet disposition and trainability. The conformation 

of the modern Western pleasure 

horses sloped shoulder, strong angle 

to the stifle, strong back, desirable neck 

set, long levers all make the job of western 

pleasure easier. The aim of our breeding 

program is to increase the ability of 

the progeny/prospect to perform, by 

breeding to the best sire we can. 

Since I started showing lungeliners in 

2004, nine yearlings have won three 

NSWPHA State Titles and four PHAA 

National Titles. In 2007 "Radically 

HotnBlazing" 2005 PHAA filly won the 

Australian Halter Showcase Lungeline. 

In 2011, "Totally Sensational" 2009 PHAA 

filly by "Zippos Sensation" won the 

NSWQH State Show at her first outing 

and won the NPHA Lungeline Futurity 

the next week. Another gelding we bred 

"I Like That" by "HF Somethin Hot", owned 

by Claire Geri and shown by Raelene 

Gilboy, won the 2011 AHS and the NSW- 

PHA Lungeline Futurities and Reserve at 

NPHA. This year "Kadel Krymsun" AQHA 

gelding won the lungeline events at the 

Summer Sizzler in Tatura and the Australian 

Halter Showcase, with ten lessons 

prior to going to the Sizzler. 

For me a top lunge line prospect must 

move pretty. To win at open national level 

shows like AHS and NPHA, if you cannot 

show your prospect in a calm cadenced 

walk, tight punchy jog and controlled flat 

lope with drive, you should not expect 

to get to the top of the line. The class is 

judged with points awarded equally for 

movement, conformation, attitude and use 

of circle, and conformation. Movement is 

dictated by conformation, breeding and 

training. Training to improve the true natural 

gait is not really possible. Training can 

improve balance, slow gaits, keep them 

off the forehand, increase drive, shorten 

stride and level top line. Incorrect training 

can easily increase knee, throw weight on 

forehand, cause imbalance, drag hock out 

behind and basically make a prospect look 

pretty miserable. 

I believe lungeline should be a small part 

of preparing the yearling to be started

under saddle. Weeks of circles leaves 

many yearlings dulled, unbalanced other 

than on a circle and heavy on the forehand, 

decreasing quality of foreleg straightness 

and swing and usually trailing hock with 

hollow back and poor self carriage. I like 

to quickly progress through basic handling, 

lunging a few days, teaching walk, jog, lope, 

and importantly stop on voice within the 

first week. From there I start driving in a 

surcingle then saddle, changing directions 

and gaits calmly with plenty of whoa time. 

Always drive in a safe fenced area but use 

poles, cones, bridges etc to keep driving 

interesting and varied. Keeping sessions 

short to 15-20 minutes is plenty. Lots of 

time tied to a pole or tree builds patience. 

By not concentrating on walk, trot, canter 

circles, the yearling learn to carry themselves 

and if they are built to Western 

Pleasure a polished lungeliner can be ready 

for the big shows in about 20 sessions. 

In the few days before the first show I 

might do a few sessions in the show halter 

and line to get used to the feel of the 

rope and whip and enforce a stricter circle. 

Get used to your show line. Many a 

class has been wrecked by a knotted line, 

tangled in whip and handler. Show day I 

like to have two or three five minute sessions 

prior to the class to check where 

they are at mentally. If all is calm it's a 

good sign, if a little fresh a few minutes 

of walk, lope, stop, jog, lope, stop drills 

gets them concentrating – then roll the 

dice. Lungeline can be very humbling at 

times. All the preparation in the world 

and they can decide to stop and poo, 

pigroot, grab the lead in their mouth etc 

out on the end of that lead. However 

a pretty moving, calm minded yearling 

doing a cute class is a very good way 

to train and pick your pleasure horse 

of the future. 

South East Queensland 

Paint Horse Club Beginner Clinic 

The first Clinic for the year run by the SEQPHC was held at 

Caboolture Showground Indoor Arena on 10th March, 2012. 

Trainers for the day were 

Lorelei Payne and Rod 

Duddy. Ten riders and 

two fence sitters 

joined in for a very 

informative and fun day. The clinic started at 9am and finished 

around 1.30pm giving time to prepare for the show the following 

day.Various areas of horsemanship and presentation were covered 

and participants gained valuable knowledge from Lorelei 

and Rod who are both very accomplished competitors and 

trainers. A big thank you to both of them 

for making the clinic a great morning. 

There was a request for the club to continue 

the clinics to help new and existing members 

and so a further clinic is planned for the 19th 

May 2012 at Caboolture Showground and 

another is pencilled in for September 15 

at the same venue. Everyone will be 

advised as to who the trainers are at 

a later time. 

These clinics are a great chance to 

meet people, ask questions and learn 

the finer points of showing horses. 

They are helpful for those wishing 

to show or just improve their horsemanship.

Showgirl Paints Up 

– 2012 GRESFORD SHOW –

Dynamic duo Karalinga Dunupinplatium and Samantha 

Johnston are at it again, raising awareness of Paint Horses 

out and about – this time during the 2012 Gresford 

Show Grand Parade. 

Samantha first hit the Paint Horse scene 

in 2003, when she purchased GP Bandits 

Final Edition (Chiquita) as a Pony Club 

horse, then decided to try her hand in 

the world of western showing. Chiquita 

was already a well performed Pony Club 

horse, having qualified for State Titles in 

sporting with her previous owner. As a 

team Samantha and Chiquita competed 

extensively at Pony Club and local shows, 

going from dressage one week to campdrafting 

the next, then later adding some 

Western shows to the mix. In 2007, as a 

longstanding member of Paterson River 

Pony Club, they took out Zone 25 Pony 

Club 15-17 yrs Sporting Champion, 3rd 

in Dressage and 5th in Campdrafting. 

Samantha was 2006 PHAA High Point 

Youth of NSW, and in the Top Ten Youth 

for two years. 

At their first National Show in 2007, they 

came home with National Championships 

in Youth Barrel Racing, Youth Keyhole and 

Open Preliminary Dressage, plus Reserve 

National Champion in Youth Hunter Hack. 

It was during this time that she met Sonya 

Kinkade, owner of Karalinga Dunupinplatium 

(Deena). This chance meeting in 

the wash bays at Samantha’s first National 

Show led to a great friendship that has 

seen Sonya help Samantha with her journey 

to the 2008 Paint Horse World 

Championships as part of the Australian 

Youth Team. Sonya kindly offered her stallion 

Sioux City Bandit to Samantha for 

Reining lessons with Steve Howe before 

she left for the States. This friendship grew 

further when Samantha returned from 

America and didn’t have a horse to compete 

on at the Nationals. Sonya offered 

her Deena (QT Dunupdouble x Karalinga 

Kaleena) and the duo began from there. 

Samantha and Deena have had many successful 

shows together, having received a 

National Title in Snr Youth Trail and a State 

Title in Snr Youth Reining. Deena has also 

been successfully campaigned by Sonya 

and together they were awarded 2010 

Reserve National Champion Amateur 

Owner Hunter Under Saddle. Deena is 

now teaching Samantha’s mother, Racheal 

Graham, the art of western riding until 

Sonya and Heath Atkinson’s new arrival 

Kaedence Mae Allanah Atkinson is ready 

to take the reins. 

This year Samantha was named the 2012 

Showgirl at the 80th Annual Gresford 

Show. The showgirl competition is run 

in conjunction with The Land Newspaper 

and Sydney Royal Easter Show. This year 

marks the 50th anniversary of the Showgirl 

competition. The contestants are 

judged on personality, confidence, ambition 

and life goals, general knowledge, 

rural knowledge, presentation and speech. 

Finalists are also asked to demonstrate 

knowledge of their local community and 

current affairs and apart from their potential 

ambassadorial qualities, contestants 

are also judged on their involvement in 

and experience of rural affairs. 

As part of the judging at the Gresford 

Show the girls must complete an interview 

with a panel of three judges who ask 

questions based on an information sheet 

that is filled in by the contestant. They will 

also ask questions to assess how well the 

girls understand what is happening in the 

world around them. On completion of the 

interview the entrants attended the 2012 

Gresford Show Art Show opening night 

where they were judged on their ability to 

mix with a crowd. During the night they 

were also interviewed by the MC and 

judged on their public speaking ability. 

Samantha is now beginning preparations 

for the Zone Finals, which will be held in 

February. If successful there she will go 

on to compete at the 2013 Sydney Royal 

Easter Show. 

Samantha plans to continue showing Paint 

Horses with two up and coming prospects, 

SV KissNTell (Dressed in Western x Little 

G Scarlet) owned by Stephen and Pam 

Simpson of Spring Valley and her own 

yearling gelding who is out of her Paint 

mare, GP Bandits Final Edition by Garth 

Brooks. Keep your eye out for these 

horse and rider combinations – you 

never know where they might pop up.

KPM Racketeer Aka Wally 

We purchased Wally from Jeff and Lee Ann Hall at the 

Queensland State Show as a weanling. I had been involved 

with helping the South East Queensland Paint Horse Club at 

their shows and had wanted a coloured Paint Horse for some 

time. The club has been so friendly to me I wanted to show 

and have some fun. I successfully showed him as a Yearling at 

Halter and had him broken in at the end of 2010 as a 2 year 

old. Leanne Bartlett trained and showed him in 2011 to win 

the High Point 2 Year Old at the Burpengary Western Performance 

Club Western Classic, High Point 2 Year Old at the Gunalda 

Western Performance Club Buckle Series, High Point 

Overall Performance Horse & High Point 2 Year Old Performance 

horse with the Gatton QH & Performance Club. 

With limited showing during his life he has achieved PHAA 

Champion no 233, five Register of Merits, one Distinction 

Award and 2008/9 Honour Roll Gelding. I am now riding him 

myself and enjoying him a great deal. I don’t profess to be a 

great rider and I may not win anything but it’s a lot of fun 

being out there having a go. Thanks to Leanne Bartlett for 

training him, thanks to my wonderful Mum for all her support 

and encouragement also thanks to Wally for 

being a ‘nice’ horse.

The “Tom Shoobridge Cleveland 

Pastoral Estate”-Tasmanian Campdraft 

and Team Penning State Finals 

were held on 21 April, 2012 

“Shotgun Wardrum” owned and trained by Veronica Mulder, 

ridden by Stuart Hirst being presented with Champion Open 

Prizes by Queensland ACA judge Tom Gleeson. Tom is from 

QLD where he also breeds Paints. 

There were 24 competitors with the top six to run off, with 

scores being compiled. Stuart completed two full rounds for 

a total of 166 – highest score for the whole day – the only 

competitor to do so. 

Shotgun Wardrum also was placed 3rd in the mens event against 

a total of 13 riders. He was also 5th in the ladies event ridden 

by Veronica against 24 riders. To receive a placing the top six 

horses on the day were eligible for a second round runoff, with 

their scores combined. 

“Shotgun Wardrum” has competed at Campdrafting for the past 

six years and has received a placing at the final in each of these 

years. 

“Oaks Diva”, a Paint Bred filly placed 6th in the men’s events also.

BUYING A PHAA REGISTERED HORSE: 

When you buy a regsitered horse you will want to 

transfer the registration into your name. To do this 

you will need to have the original registration papers 

and a transfer form signed by the Registered Owner 

of the horse. You should check if the seller is the registered 

owner and if not, make sure the transfer is signed by the 

correct person. You can check this by sighting the registration papers, 

asking the PHAA office or by going to our free online studbook.

our stickers (large - $10, small - $5). 

So the requirements to complete ownership/regsitration transfer are: 

1. Original registrations papers. You will need to obtain these from the 

seller and send them to the PHAA ofiice. New ones will be issued 

in your name. 

2. A transfer form signed by the Registered Owner as seller and you 

as purchaser. This must include the date of sale. The transfer form 

is located on the reverse side of the registration papers or is also 

available as a separate form. The transfer fee is $50 per horse. 

3. You the new owner, must be a current financial member of the 

PHAA to transfer the horse into your name. Currently single annual 

membership is $155. If you are a new member, the transfer of your 

first horse is free.

and breeds. Lorelei 

has been one of 

Australia’s most 

decorated equestrians

competing with 

enormous success. 

Some of her equestrian 

achievements include being the youngest recipient of the 

highly sought after award from the Sydney Royal Easter show, 

MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITON, With her magnificent galloway 

hack SIGNAL. Some of the other magnificent Horses that 

Lorelei has produced in the Open Hack ring have been The 

Great Gatsby winner of Queensland Country Life Hack of the 

Year in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and Australian Stock Horse Association 

Hack of the Year in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983. She had 

similar success with other notable hacks including Wittwood, 

Quality Inn, Copper Dust and Bold Archer. Lorelei has been 

one of Australia's most decorated Equestrian’s wining numerous 

Turnout Classes and Lady Riders across the board at the Royal 

Shows nationally. She was once complemented on her appropriate 

dress standards by none other than Her Royal Highness 

Princess Teresa DE BORBON of Spain. 

In the Quarter Horse world Lorelei has won many awards including 

Australian National High Point Awards with six different 

horses in various categories. 

Lorelei has judged extensively throughout Australia and internationally, 

Including New Zealand, (HACKS AND RIDER CLASSES) 

2012, New Caledonia and has been invited to judge in U.S.A. 

next year. She is highly sought after as a judge, and she also sits 

on several judging panels for various breeds. 

Lorelei has had great success with her breeding program and the 

horses that she has bred are making their mark in the Quarter 

Horse and open show horse scene. 

Lorelei has a vibrant personality and is highly thought of by her 

peers. She is honest, sincere and punctual.

During my time 

on the 2012 

series of The 

Biggest Loser, I lost 63.1 kilos, which was nearly 50% of my body 

weight. One of the main reasons for signing up to the series in 

the first place was my passion for Paint Horses, and wanting to 

ride and be competitive on a bigger scale, something I was just 

struggling to do as a morbidly obese woman. I certainly have left 

the series living my life more fully, and well on the way to becoming 

that better version of myself I had always hoped to be. I 

also managed to win the Eliminated Contestants Prize, pocketing 

$20,000. I cannot thank the whole Biggest Loser team enough 

for the change in my life, and my passion for Paint Horses has only 

grown stronger and will continue. I also thank the whole PHAA 

Team for their support in my journey and look forward to seeing 

you all at the shows in 2012!

CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Victorian Paint Horse Association managed the running of 

“The Victorian State Show” for 2012. This is the second State 

Show that the current committee has supported and organised. 

Fundraising was difficult this year, but they did not let that stop 

them from grinding away until they had met their goals. The 

event was held over the Easter break at Tonimbuk Equestrian 

Centre and run over two days. 

Many competitors travelled from all over Victoria and a handful 

of interstate competitors made the journey south to compete at 

this prestigious event. International judge David Young from New 

Zealand travelled here to judge and did a fabulous job. Everyone 

entered classes in the hope that they might obtain a State Title 

for their effort. Age had no barriers for Angela Williams and her 

trusted mount “Dells Royal Impact”, who is 26 years young and 

showed some of the younger horses how it’s done. “Futurity 

Classes” were well supported in the program, with winners 

receiving stunning Montana Silversmith Buckles and we were 

lucky enough to have gorgeous garlands that were supplied by JC 

Designs Show Garlands. We were blessed in having our favourite 

announcer Don Cossa accompanied by his lovely partner Sue 

Carra, our show secretary, who was invaluable to the success 

and running of the show. Congratulations to all those competitors 

who competed at the event and all sponsors who were 

kind enough to support the club.
