MESSAGE FROM THE FINA PRESIDENT
X I F I N A W O R L D M A S T E R S C H A M P I O N S H I P S 2 0 0 6
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome all of you to San Francisco (USA)
for the 11th FINA World Masters Championships 2006.
With a philosophy in which friendship, leisure and fitness are deeply
associated, these championships have all the ingredients to become a
success. The last edition of the competition, in Riccione/San Marino,
with more than 8,000 participants (a new record), showed that these
principles were always present and I am sure that in the USA this spirit
will also prevail.
With the FINA World Masters Championships, we want to prove that
even when retired from the high level competition, our swimmers, water
polo players, divers, synchronized and open water swimmers are still
capable to delight us with their performances. Thousands of athletes,
from 25 years old up to 90 or more, confirm that the aquatic vocation is
still there no matter the age.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the
United States Aquatic Sports, Inc., to the Organizing Committee of these
championships and to the local authorities for their support and help.
Their enthusiasm will be a guarantee of a successful competition and the
experience of USA in hosting FINA events—the fourth edition of these
championships took place in Indianapolis in 1992—is an added value to
its organization.
So, for all the athletes participating in the 11th FINA World Masters
Championships, I wish them all the luck.
USMS Welcomes the 11th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships
Masters sports of all kinds present many opportunities to many different
people. I regret to see that the average adult does not exercise regularly.
Health statistics show the impact the lack of exercise is having on our
populations. Thus, Masters aquatic sports are a showcase of the potential
that sport has for adults all over the world.
United States Masters Swimming viewed the FINA World Championships
as a celebration of Masters aquatic sports and the gifted atheletes that dedicate
themselves to fitness throughout the world. Thus, we invited the world to
share in our celebration through this unique sporting event.
My hat is off to the many dedicated volunteers in the Pacific Local Masters
Swimming Committee and allied representatives from USA Diving, Water
Polo, and Synchronized Swimming. The details and hours that they have
spent planning this event are difficult to imagine. Their product will speak
for itself. Their work is all for you to have the best opportunity to perform
to your utmost goals and enjoy this aquatic festival. FINA World Championships
are magical. They are the one time that we all gather together to
celebrate the sport that we love.
I congratulate you on your training and dedication. I welcome you to Stanford
University, California and the United States. We rejoice in sharing this
time with the entire world swimming community.
Respectfully,
Jim Miller, M.D.
Welcome to the XI FINA Masters World Championships!
As Mayor of Palo Alto, I am delighted to welcome the XI FINA Masters World
Championships to the City of Palo Alto and to the extraordinary athletic facilities
at Stanford University.
In the same way that masters competitors balance athletic pursuits with their work
and family lives, Palo Alto balances its beautiful natural surroundings with being a
prominent center of global innovation. Located in close proximity to three international
airports - San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland - Palo Alto is home to worldwide
corporate leaders such as Xerox, Hewlett Packard and Sun Microsystems, yet
maintains one-third of its city area as open spaces, including 34 parks.
An athletic lifestyle and hosting major sporting events have always been a key
part of the fabric of living in Palo Alto. From World Cup Soccer to the 1984
Olympic Games, we enjoy hosting sporting events. We value our parks and open
space and encourage our community to pursue lifelong fitness activities.
Outside of athletic competition, masters competitors will enjoy discovering the
beauty and vibrancy of Palo Alto. Whether interested in sampling the academic
excellence of Stanford University, seeing firsthand where leading Silicon Valley
firms are shaping the products of tomorrow, or exploring the abundance of parks,
wineries, and natural surroundings, visitors will love what Palo Alto and the Bay
Area have to offer.
On behalf of the City of Palo Alto I would like to extend my special thanks to
all the volunteers that have contributed both their time and resources to the
2006 FINA Masters World Championships. You are an integral part of this
World Championship.
And to the athletes, I applaud your dedication to your sport and wish you the best
of luck in your upcoming competitions.
Welcome to the XI FINA Masters World Championships!
As Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, I am delighted to welcome the
XI FINA Masters World Championships to the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.
San Francisco, the city by the bay, is just forty miles north of Palo Alto. Because
of the cultural diversity of San Francisco there is always something for everybody
to do here. Attend a game at SBC Park, watch the sea lions play at Pier 39, or
tour the Napa Valley and sample some of California’s best wines. From shopping
at Union Square to walking through Chinatown, San Francisco has so much to
offer. I understand that the organizers are creating a special “Swim from Alcatraz
Island” just for all the competitors.
I would like to applaud all your hard work and effort in your quest to compete in
the XI FINA Masters World Championships. I am looking forward to the competition
that will take place in the water at the Stanford University Avery Aquatic
Center and the open water venue.
On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, I would like to extend my
special thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers that have contributed both their
time and resources to the XI FINA Masters World Championships. Your support
has been key to the success of this event. And to the athletes, I wish you the best
of luck in your upcoming competitions.
Sincerely,
On behalf of the people of San Jose, I am delighted to welcome the XI FINA Masters
The innovation of Silicon Valley has transformed an agricultural community into
a thriving metropolitan area of restaurants, shops, state-of-the-art transportation
and a vibrant art scene. While you, your families and fans are here, I hope
you will take the opportunity to explore our beautiful city. Our downtown is
wonderful, with great restaurants, cultural offerings and entertainment, and our
community extends its warm hospitality to you.
I applaud your hard work and effort in your quest to compete in the XI FINA
Masters World Championships. I commend you for your dedication to excellence,
pursuit of the highest level of competition, and spirit of sportsmanship.
educational facilities we have here at Stanford University.
We are delighted to welcome the swimmers, water polo players, divers,
synchronized swimmers and open water competitors to the 2006 FINA Masters
World Championships.
Stanford University has won 71 NCAA team championships since 1980, as well
as 10 consecutive Director’s Cup titles, awarded annually to the best overall collegiate
athletic program in the nation. Since 1990, Stanford athletes have won 63 Olympic
Medals and 170 individual NCAA championships. In addition to hosting large-scale
events such as the 1984 Olympic Games and 1994 World Cup, we are accustomed
to hosting events across a wide variety of sports.
In just the past two years, we have hosted the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Track Nationals,
international men’s and women’s water polo, professional women’s tennis, and a
mix of collegiate and regional competitions. The recently renovated Avery Aquatics
Center, the site of the 2004 USA Swimming Summer Nationals, will provide an ideal
facility for competition for athletes from around the world. Our staff is committed
to providing the “best competitive conditions” for athletes of all ages.
On behalf of Stanford University, I would like to extend my special thanks to
all the sponsors, volunteers and fans that have contributed both their time and
Organizing Committee
Fellow Masters Swimmers:
On behalf of the Pacific Masters Swimming Association, we wish to extend our
invitation to Masters Swimmers throughout the world, to the XI FINA World Masters
Championships at Stanford University’s Avery Aquatic Center, Stanford, California,
August 4th through August 16th, 2006.
Stanford University, one of the world’s premiere universities, is located just 40
kilometers south of San Francisco. Stanford University competes in all aquatic
disciplines and has won many national collegiate championships.
Avery Aquatic Center is one of the outstanding aquatic venues in the world and enjoys
perfect year round weather. The average daily temperature in August is 25° C (79° F) and
it never rains. We expect great swimming at the fast pools of the Avery Aquatic Center.
You will notice that an “All Relay Day” has been scheduled on Tuesday, allowing you
to get your friends and put together both mixed and single gender relays. Encourage
your teammates to come to the Championships and enjoy the fun of cheering your
teammates in both relays and individual events.
The Local Organizing Committee is dedicated to hosting world championships at
which the competitors will have the opportunity to compete under optimum conditions.
There will be fast pools and abundant training facilities. As Richard Quick,
women’s swim coach at Stanford University and five-time US Olympic coach said,
“The perfect climate, abundance of training facilities, and the energy and motivation
pervasive throughout this region combine to provide the best competitive conditions
for athletes to achieve peak performance. XI FINA Masters World Championships
will provide competitive conditions unmatched at any Masters Championships.”
Stanford University is located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay area, one of the
great tourist destinations in the world. The magnificent vistas, sparkling blue water,
wooded hills, soaring bridges and towering buildings provide a backdrop to cultural
diversity of many people from many lands living together in harmony.
After the championships, you are invited to explore what is considered by some to be
one of the most beautiful areas in the world. The Local Organizing Committee has
arranged with two premier California tour companies to provide you with all the help
you may need in order to make your stay in California a truly memorable one.
Come to California and enjoy the competition, the fellowship and camaraderie of
Masters swimming. Perhaps you, too, will leave your heart in San Francisco.
The cities of Palo Alto, San Francisco and San Jose are
aligned along a peninsula that shelters San Francisco
Bay from the Pacific Ocean. They are also, respectively,
the educational, financial and corporate hubs of a
region also known to the world as Silicon Valley – the
largest concentration of high technology research and
development concerns in the world.
The Bay Area is a region rich in human resources,
with one of the most ethnically diverse populations
in the world; and it is the leading western gateway to
the United States with three international airports,
two seaports and an extensive network of road and rail
links to the nation’s interior.
PALO ALTO
This compact city of 61,200 is home to Stanford
University, located 34 miles south of San Francisco
and 14 miles north of San Jose, each of which is the
site of an international airport. One third of its 24
square miles is open space along San Francisco Bay
and the Coast Range of low mountains separating
the city from the Pacific. Affluent and cosmopolitan,
Palo Alto is considered the birthplace of Silicon Valley
because of its role as home to the high-tech pioneers at
Stanford who made it a leader in cutting edge developments
in medicine and information technology.
STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Leland Stanford, an early California governor and
a financier of America’s original transcontinental
railroad, purchased 650 acres for a country home and
farm for his trotting horses on the Peninsula in 1876.
Nine years later following the death of his only child,
Stanford and his wife deeded the farm to be the site of
Leland Stanford Junior University. Today more than
6,600 undergraduate and 7,800 graduate students from
nearly 100 countries are enrolled in a school that is a
world leader in sciences, engineering and medicine. Its
research spawned the high-tech age and the internet.
In addition, its athletic program annually is recognized
as the best among U.S. colleges and universities
based on competitive results.
SAN FRANCISCO
Repeatedly ranked by world travelers as their favorite
city to visit, the city was born in California’s Gold
Rush as the gateway to the riches and opportunity
available in the Golden State. It still is. San Francisco’s
banks financed the rail line that linked the state across
America’s vast interior to the populous East, it welcomed
immigrants from around the Pacific Rim to the New
World and now it is the financial center of high tech.
As a tourism capital, the city and its Chinese and
Italian neighborhoods are home to a collection of
hotels and restaurants unmatched by any other city
of 750,000 inhabitants.
SAN JOSE
California’s original civilian settlement, founded in
1777 by Spanish settlers, is now the “Capital of Silicon
Valley” and largest city in the Bay Area with a population
approaching one million. The transformation
from a farming community of orchards to America’s
tenth largest city, home to more high-tech companies
than anywhere in the world, began in the 1950s
when Stanford graduates such as William Hewlett
and David Packard made the technological breakthroughs
in electronics that created the computer
industry. Now high-tech companies such as Cisco
Systems, Adobe and eBay drive the economy of this
dynamic city, which has the lowest crime rate of any
U.S. city over 250,000 population.

THE CENTER
The largest swimming facility in the nation, Avery
Aquatics Center is also acclaimed as one of the fastest
and finest. The former deGuerre Pool complex,
named after Dorothy and Sidney deGuerre, was
finished in 1972 at a cost of $2,200,000. The newly
renovated (finished in 2000) Avery Aquatic Center
serves as the home for the Stanford University’s
men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams,
men’s and women’s water polo teams, and synchronized
swimming team. The complex includes four
separate pools: the Avery Stadium Pool, the Maas
Diving Center, the Belardi Pool, and the Baker
Francisco Bay. Swimmers start and finish at points
approximately twenty-five meters apart in the water off
the sandy beach are easily accessible from the parking
yellow buoys will clearly mark the course. The course
narrows through the short channel past the marina,
then continues around the island in a counter-clockwise
direction. It’s then a straight swim to the finish
approximately 1200 meters distant, visible due to the
NE WSPAPERS AND T V CHANNEL S
The San Francisco Bay Area has four major
daily papers, 15 over-the-air television channels
and dozens of cable channels available in most
hotels and motels.
POSTAL SERVICE
Post Offices are generally open from 0900
to 1700 hours Monday to Friday. Some have
Saturday hours. A full national and international
service is available.
TIPPING
Tip only if you are satisfied with the service.
Tips are seldom added to bills. If tips are
included as part of your tour package you will
be informed of this. Occasionally restaurants
will add a service charge, especially if the party
is more than 8 people, in which case there is no
need for an additional tip, unless the service is
exceptional, and you can afford to give more.
The following rates serve only as a guideline.
Tip what you feel comfortable with.
• 15–20% on meals depending on standard
of service
• $1 for each piece of luggage carried by a porter
• $2–$5 a night to the chambermaid, more for
stays over a week
• 15% of the fare for taxi drivers depending
whether or not they assist you with baggage etc.
If any service personnel go out of their way to
assist you, it is always a nice gesture to offer
them a gratuity. In many cases they will not accept
it, but will very much appreciate the offer.
BANKS
Most commercial banks are open Monday-
Friday 0900 hour to 1700 hours. Banking facilities
at the international airport provide foreign
exchange services for international arrivals
and departures, including weekends. ATMs are
located throughout the United States.
CREDIT CARDS
Credit cards are widely accepted throughout
the United States. Those in common use include
VISA, MasterCard, American Express and to a
lesser extent, Diners Club and Discover.
TR AVELLERS CHEQUES
Travellers cheques can be changed at commercial
banks, large city hotels and many
other retail establishments. They should be
denominated in US Dollars.
SHOPPING
Visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area are able
to shop in the cities or in the many shopping
malls. Most stores are open from 0900 hours to
1800 hours with most stores in the malls open
from 1000 hours to 2100 hours Monday through
Friday. Additionally, many city and suburban
shops and malls are open all day Saturday and
Sunday with variations in opening and closing
times. Corner stores and service stations
(petrol/gas) are open seven days.
TA XES
Goods and services in California are subject to
a 8.75% sales tax. Hotels are subject to a separate
hotel tax from 12-15%. The sales tax or the
hotel tax cannot be claimed back by visitors.
WHAT TO WEAR
California’s relaxed lifestyle lends itself to an
informal style of dress. Even in restaurants and
nightclubs neat casual clothes are acceptable.
(There are some fancy restaurants in San Francisco
where men must wear a coat and tie).
MEDICAL AND EMERGENCY SERVICES
All emergency services can be contacted in
the San Francisco Bay area by dialling 911.
California’s medical services are both public
and private. Please note - medical services are
not free to visitors. It is strongly recommended
that visitors purchase health insurance.
Visitors requiring medical services, drugs or
pharmaceutical supplies after normal shopping
hours should check with the hotel/motel reception
or in the local telephone directory.
DRIVING LICENSES
Reciprocal driving rights exist between
California and most counties. Most rental car
companies will ask for an International Drivers
license or your home country‘s driver‘s license
if it is in English. The driver will need to be over
25 years old.
ELEC TRICIT Y
Electricity throughout the United States is
supplied at 110 volts 60 hertz.
WATER
All United States cities and towns have excellent
public water supplies; tap (faucet) water is
fresh and safe to drink.
INTERNE T ACCESS
Access can be found at most major hotels and
many coffee shops. Local internet cafes have
wireless access.

Stadium pool and warm down opportunities
(eight lanes) will be available in the Maas Diving
Center pool.
the pool feet first in a cautious and controlled
manner. No diving or backstroke starts will be
allowed except in designated sprint lanes. No
diving or backstroke starts will be allowed in
the warm-up pool. One or more lanes shall be
designated as ONE-WAY SPRINT lanes during
the pre-meet warm-up sessions in the competition
pool only. No sprint lanes will be designated
in the warm-up pool. ANY SWIMMER WHO
ACTS IN AN UNSPORTSMANLIKE OR UNSAFE
MANNER WITHIN THE SWIMMING VENUE MAY
BE CONSIDERED FOR APPROPRIATE ACTION
OR PENALTY BY THE FINA MASTERS COMMIS-
SION. Pull-buoys, kick boards, fins, and hand
paddles are not allowed in the competition pool
or warm-up pool.
ENTRY RESTRICTIONS A swimmer may enter a
maximum of five individual events and three
relays, but not more than two individual events
QUALIFYING STANDARDS See following page.
Actual time of event swum, which has exceeded
the qualifying standards, will not be shown on
the result sheets, but instead will be noted on
the result sheets as N.T. (No Time). In individual
events longer than 200M the race officials may
order out any competitor not complying with the
time standards.
Entry times are to be submitted as long
course meters times.
COMPETITION NOTES All starts will be “over
the head.” The one-start rule will apply for all
swimming events.
PRE-SEEDING All events, with the exception of
400m and 800m freestyle and the 400m individual
medley, will be pre-seeded, with the oldest age
groups first, and with the slowest heats swum
first within each age group. The 400m and 800m
freestyle and the 400m individual medley will be
deck-seeded from the slowest to the fastest, regardless
of age or age group. The 400m and 800m
freestyle will be swum one swimmer per lane
unless the Organizing Committee, with approval
of the Management Committee, determines that
two swimmers per lane is necessary to control
the duration of the event. Heat sheets will be
available to competitors at registration.
If the Management Committee deems it
necessary, women and men will be seeded
together one swimmer per lane for the 400m
and 800m freestyle.
If the Management Committee approves
preseeding two swimmers per lane, one or more
of the following methods may be used: (1) Asking
for volunteers to swim two to a lane (2) requiring
swimmers in the 60+ age groups to swim two to
a lane; (3) seeding all swimmers two to a lane.
Swimmers competing two to a lane will compete
before one swimmer to a lane.
RELAY EVENTS Relay cards indicating the names
of the preregistered swimmers will be given to
the team representative on arrival at registration.
These competitors must be verified or
amended and the relay cards returned to the
designated point by Monday, 7 August, 2006 at
1:00 pm. Changes to team age groups or times
will not be accepted after 3 June, 2006. All relay
team members must be affiliated with the same
swimming club. A swimmer may not swim for
more than one team per relay event.
ESCAPE FROM
ALCATRAZ SWIM
SAT URDAY, 12 AUGUS T 2 0 0 6
Only one prisoner – John Paul
Scott – escaped from Alcatraz
by swimming. He was discovered
the next morning on the
rocks near where the Bay meets
the Pacific Ocean, and was
treated for hypothermia and
shock before being returned
to the island prison. Since the
maximum-security penitentiary
was closed in the mid-1960s,
several hundred swimmers
attempt, and many complete,
the 1.25 mile crossing in San
Francisco Bay each year.
For those planning to swim, the
water around Alcatraz is about
15• C (60• F). Swimmers should
have practiced in cold water
before attempting this swim.
