An approach to assess<strong>in</strong>g the impact of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on staff per<strong>for</strong>mance known as the Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Impact Evaluation (TIE) is outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> an issue of the Family Plann<strong>in</strong>g Manager. This issue<br />

also offers practical suggestions <strong>for</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g, analyz<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g data on tra<strong>in</strong>ee<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>in</strong> the workplace. It concludes with suggestions <strong>for</strong> ways that managers can use<br />

the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation to make recommendations to decision makers, to improve tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses, or<br />

to seek management solutions to per<strong>for</strong>mance problems.<br />

A number of studies have been undertaken to assess the impact of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes on<br />

the knowledge skills <strong>and</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance of cadres who work <strong>in</strong> MNRH at community level <strong>in</strong><br />

LMICs. The table below summarises the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of theses studies among health volunteers,<br />

TBAs, nurses <strong>and</strong> midwives, cadres with<strong>in</strong> the community health workers category <strong>and</strong> the<br />

cadres known as primary health care workers.<br />

Statistically significant changes over the 2-year period were<br />

apparent <strong>for</strong> tetanus, BCG, polio <strong>and</strong> DTP, support<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

positive impact the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tervention had on<br />

immunization coverage<br />

TBAS tra<strong>in</strong>ed as part of PHC <strong>in</strong>itiative. MM & NM rates fell<br />

but improved transport may have also contributed<br />

recognised complications such as reta<strong>in</strong>ed placenta <strong>and</strong><br />

excessive blood loss <strong>and</strong> were well aware of the need to refer<br />

these women to a health facility quickly<br />
