These tools range from those that focus on tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g community members to those that deal<br />

with build<strong>in</strong>g the skills of health workers. The first seven tools have the <strong>for</strong>mer focus while<br />

the guide <strong>for</strong> private midwives <strong>and</strong> the counsell<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course are concerned with<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g providers. The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) <strong>and</strong> the Africa<br />

Regional Office of the SEATS Project developed The Community Mobilization Curriculum<br />

<strong>and</strong> Guide. This aims to <strong>in</strong>crease the effectiveness of private midwives by exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g their<br />

active <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> the community. The Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Management Skills guide aims to<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease the susta<strong>in</strong>ability of these private-sector delivery po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> emphasizes the<br />

relationship among cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education, improvement <strong>in</strong> the quality <strong>and</strong> scope of<br />

reproductive health care (RHC) services, <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess viability. Although orig<strong>in</strong>ally designed<br />

<strong>for</strong> private sector midwives <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a, both guides are relevant to private sector RHC<br />

providers <strong>and</strong> services throughout the develop<strong>in</strong>g world.<br />

Little documentation could be sourced that provides <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the effectiveness of these<br />

tools. One RCT study found that the use of educational programmes <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g the capacity<br />
