A New Era
in Decay Control
The Bright Solution
to Decay Control
Drenching Effectively
to Control Decay
Blue mold (Penicillium expansum) and gray mold (Botrytis
cinerea) are the most economically damaging postharvest
diseases of apples and pears. Together, these diseases
cost packers millions of dollars annually through direct
losses, repacking costs, loss of market share, and loss of
buyer confidence. Severe losses from postharvest decay
have been experienced by packers and growers due to
thiabendazole (TBZ) resistance in pathogen populations
and use of 1-MCP without a fungicide. Shield-Brite ®
Penbotec is the solution to these costly decay problems.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec is the first new chemical
fungicide for the pome fruit industry in 30 years.
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec does not exhibit cross resistance
to sterol-inhibiting or benzimidazole fungicides.
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec prevents growth of TBZresistant
strains of the fungi that cause blue and gray
molds.
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec is an easy-to-use, easy-to-mix
liquid formulation.
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec has preventative and curative
activity.
• Packers will finally be able to combat fungicide
resistance issues and restore their confidence in
drenching prior to storage.
• Safe and effective, Shield-Brite ® Penbotec is classified
by the Environmental Protection Agency as a reducedrisk
fungicide.
COMPATIBILITY
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec is physically compatible with
Pace International’s popular apple and pear products
such as Shield-Brite ® AP-40, Shield DPA 15% and 31%,
PrimaFresh ® Ultra, PrimaFresh ® Ultra 2000, PrimaFresh ®
Pear Coat, Shield-Brite ® AP-431 FD, PrimaFresh ® FD,
and Opti-CAL.
* Compatibility with non-Pace products should always be
checked before use.
• Many packers have lost confidence in drenching as a
method of effective disease control.
• Alternative application methods are being developed
(e.g. Thermofogging), but the need for drenching
remains as an efficient method for timely application of
DPA and fungicides after harvest.
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec
TM is highly effective in reducing
decay caused by both blue and gray molds.
Shield-Brite® PenbotecTM 400 SC
Sanderson & Aldrich, 2002 Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission, Wenatchee, WA
• d’Anjou pears were wound-inoculated with P. expansum.
• Pears were CA stored for five months before evaluating decay levels.
• Nearly all (95.2%) of the inoculated untreated control fruit decayed.
• Only 5.2% of the fruit treated with Shield-Brite ®
Penbotec showed
signs of decay.
VERSATILITY
• Shield-Brite ® Penbotec can be used in a drench*, dip,
line spray, or can be mixed with coatings.
* For greatest disease control, early use in drenchers is
recommended.
Protection Against TBZ
Resistant Decay Pathogens
Penbotec Protects
Your 1-MCP Investment
Sole reliance on benzimidazole fungicides (Benlate and
TBZ) over the last three decades has created significant
resistance problems in many packing houses.
Shield-Brite ® Penbotec works on a different mode of
action than TBZ, making it highly effective in controlling blue
and gray molds that have developed resistance to TBZ.
• Increasing concentrations of TBZ does not regain control
of resistant pathogens. If decay pathogens are resistant
to TBZ at 10 ppm, they will not be controlled at 1000 ppm.
• By controlling pathogens resistant to TBZ, packers
will significantly reduce cullage due to decay and also
minimize losses from repacking.
Many packers skipped the drench and DPA and went straight
to storage with 1-MCP treatment. In many cases, this has
resulted in substantial decay, mostly from gray mold. With
the high cost of 1-MCP, packers cannot afford to risk losing
their investment to decay. Shield-Brite ® Penbotec protects
your investment while decreasing your risk for decay losses.
Penbotec is extremely effective in controlling both blue and
gray molds in 1-MCP treated fruit. There are no negative
interactions between Penbotec and 1-MCP.
PENBOTEC AND 1-MCP TRIALS
• Empire apples were wounded and then inoculated with
TBZ-resistant B. cinerea and P. expansum in separate
trials. (see Graph 8 & Graph 9)
• Apples were cold stored for 126 days before evaluating
decay levels.
Shield-Brite ® Penbotec TM completely controls gray and blue
mold whereas TBZ was ineffective.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• Drenchers and Dip Tanks
Add 16–32 fl. ounces (480–950 ml) per 100
gallons of water for 30–60 second contact time.
16 fl. ounces / 100 gallons = 500 ppm
