and their basic needs. Nutrition has a particularly 

important role in this. According to the principle “feeding 

like nature”, St. Hippolyt has made it its business to research 

and develop nutritional concepts for every aspect of 

equine life and to continually adapt them in line with the 

latest scientific findings. 

Every day, the diverse team of St. Hippolyt, comprising veterinary 

surgeons, biologists, agricultural and food scientists 

as well as horse trainers, works alongside horse owners and 

breeders, riders, veterinary surgeons, scientists and other 

experts from equestrian sport to provide the exact nutrition 

the horse requires to develop according to its nature. 

The new edition of our main catalogue will provide you with 

general information about horse feeding as well as insights 

into our work and, of course, detailed information about all

The principle of sustainability as a guiding principle of St. Hippolyt: 

1. We use high-quality raw materials and ingredients which have been gathered in a sustainable way and obtained 

mainly from regional contract growers. 

Dialogue with our suppliers is important to us, to be able to guarantee constant quality. That is why we maintain close contact and start 

specific trial series. 

2. Focus on an ecologically oriented choice of feed ingredients 

It is important to us that our raw materials are treated with as few chemicals as possible, which means that the soil is less polluted with 

pesticides. Cooperation with regional contract growers enables us to have a targeted influence on the cultivation of the raw materials. 

3. No chemical preservatives, artificial flavourings or binders 

Preservation is achieved naturally by means of herbs, garlic, vitamins, vinegar specialities, cold-pressed oils and sugar beet syrup. 

4. Production at Mühle Ebert mill in Dielheim: a living organism 

Organic company structure combines tradition with modern age – a guarantee of quality with more than 600 years of know-how from our family tradition. 

5. Unique processing of the St. Hippolyt raw materials: technically digested cereals and biofermentation 

Gentle production processes make for your horse’s healthy digestion and willingness to perform. 

6. All St. Hippolyt pellets and oils are carefully cold-pressed 

Protection of heat-sensitive vitamins, enzymes, fatty acids and natural plant substances. High-quality pellets which do not pose a risk of

8. St. Hippolyt Glyx Principle 

All St. Hippolyt products are kept at a moderate level of starch and sugar. The Glyx series, however, is characterized by further aspects, which 

are particularly relevant for easy keepers and horses suffering from EMS or ECD. The Glyx-Wiese series, Glyx-Mash and Glyx-Lobs are 

low in starch and sugar, gluten-free, free from molasses and grains as well as low-glycaemic.

Nutrition 

An optimal supply of energy-providing, body-forming 

and health-promoting nutrients makes horses beautiful, 

confident, hardy and powerful. This is not only a question 

of the selection, quality and natural diversity of the 

feed ingredients. The manufacturing of the feed products 

plays a decisive role as well. That is why St. Hippolyt 

is exploring new avenues to make the feed even more 

digestible and physiologically effective by deploying 

biologically sensible processing procedures 

– This takes “Feeding like nature” to a totally new level. 

LECITHIN MICELLES 

WITH TURBO EFFECT 

Some of the valuable vital substances in the feed are 

excreted by the organism without being used. This is due 

to the slow transport of many nutrients through the intestinal 

wall into the blood. With our liquid products, “Qelan” 

for horses and “Canigard” for dogs, we have managed to 

substantially reduce the excretion of unused substances. 

With the help of a novel complexation procedure, we 

have created vital substances with unprecedented bioavailability. 

To achieve this, very small droplets (micelles), which are 

coated with pure lecithin, are manufactured from the vital 

substances. 

Due to their small size, which is still above the nano range, 

and the “slide effect” of the lecithin, the vital-substancelecithin 

complex easily penetrates the intestinal wall. The 

absorption rate is assumed to be three or four times the 

rate of non-complexed nutrients. We refer to this as the 

“turbo effect” of the micelles. It helps functional nutrients 

such as L-carnitine, vitamin E, vitamin C, coenzyme 

Q10 and the joint-protecting glycosaminoglycans to reach 

a significantly higher and more effective concentration in 

the target tissues. The organism itself profits from better 

performance and a higher metabolic potential. Other effects, 

such as cell protection and anti-ageing effects of 

vitamins and joint-building substances, can be improved 

as well. Remarkably, our company-owned complexation 

procedure allows us to dispense completely with the 

usual synthetic surfactants as technical additives. That 

excludes a chemical hazard for the sensitive cell membranes. 

And we remain true to our principle of “Feeding 

like nature”. 

FERMENTATION AND 

VINEGAR EXTRACTION 

For several years, we at Mühle Ebert Dielheim have increasingly 

been using germination and fermentation as 

natural refinement procedures for St. Hippolyt horse 

feeds. Barley and maize, for example, are germinated before 

being hydrothermally flaked. Brewer’s yeast cultures, 

malt and sweet whey are carefully fermented before 

being blended. What are the benefits of this? 

During the germination and fermentation process, enzymes 

and beneficial microorganisms transform some 

of the starch and sugar into short-chain fatty acids as a 

form of pre-digestion. Fatty acids have a better energy 

yield and pose fewer digestive and metabolic risks than 

starch and sugar. The activated plant and yeast enzymes 

also contribute effectively to the digestibility of starch, 

protein and fat in the small intestine, including the entire 

ration. Thus, the organism absorbs a higher percentage 

of the main nutrients fed – an effect that makes it possible 

to cut down on concentrates. And, even more importantly, 

the susceptibility to bloating, diarrhoea and colic can 

be reduced overall. 

The fermentation process of brewer’s yeast, malt and 

whey is managed in such a way that a certain quantum of 

vinegar is produced. This naturally obtained vinegar provides 

further benefits for the digestibility of the feed and 

the health of the digestive organs: 

• cleaning effect, as a spice it counteracts many 

pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi 

• ligating to starch, which slows down starch-related 

changes of blood sugar levels 

• particularly important for horses with a tendency 

towards insulin resistance with an increased risk 

of laminitis 

• sport horses benefit from more stable performance 

properties, since the blood sugar as a source of 

energy is available more evenly and without the 

commonly known sharp drop in blood sugar levels. 

FERMENTATION 

OF CARROTS 

Mühle Ebert recently started to ferment carrots, which 

serve as a kind of topping for the cereal flakes in the 

St. Hippolyt products. Fermented carrots have a beneficial 

effect on the intestinal flora and the immune system 

of horses. At Mühle Ebert, the fermented carrots are processed 

together with the cereal flakes. This produces a 

fibre-rich feed that supports the intestinal flora and the 

immune system of the horse through the antioxidant potential 

of the carotenoids it contains. Carrots are rich in 

fibre, potassium, iron, zinc and boron. 

In addition, they contain significant amounts of carotenoids 

(100-200 mg/kg), tocopherols, nicotinamide, B vitamins 

and polyphenols and thus have a significant antioxidant 

potential. Carotene has an inhibiting effect on 

some types of cancer. Converted into retinol (vitamin A), 

it is important to preserve healthy eyesight and coats. This 

enormous health potential is best preserved by a reductive, 

anaerobic fermentation milieu. This milieu is created by 

anaerobic fermentation with lactic acid bacteria. From a 

nutritional point of view, the fermented carrot is superior 

to the raw carrot. 

FUNCTIONAL BENEFITS 

OF THE METHOD

• Reduction of the carrots’ glycaemic index through: 

• Degradation of the carrot’s sugar 

• Modification of the starch in the grain, slow 

release of glucose 

• Reduction of the postprandial increase of blood 

glucose through lactic and acetic acid

A FEED WITH TRADITION 

For centuries, mash has been fed after heavy work, in times 

of recovery or to prevent colic. Irish Mash is particularly 

tasty. Based on the original traditional recipe containing 

wheat bran and linseed, it has been developed further 

according to the latest findings of nutritional science.

DIGESTION AND REGENERATION 

Due to its dietetic recipe and excellent acceptance, Irish 

Mash can be offered as a first meal after colics, operations 

or serious illnesses, as well as to horses which have lost 

their appetite or have problems chewing. The feed has an 

excellent effect on the intestine and thus can improve the 

feed conversion of delicate feeders and help them gain 

weight. Irish Mash helps horses recuperate after competitions, 

breeding and giving birth and has particularly proven 

itself during coat changing.

with the same amount of lukewarm water and leave to soak

Happiness doesn’t need any sugar 

A juicy apple, a crunchy carrot, fresh grass, crusty bread 

or a delicious, aromatic grain muesli when all of the work 

is done – they all seem to be a palatable and healthy 

treat for the horse. However, many of these treats actually 

contain a considerable amount of sugar and starch. Fed in 

excess, they increase the blood sugar levels and the risk 

of laminitis. Nevertheless, there are ways to offer a healthy 

reward without any risks or bad conscience. 

GLYX-MASH –

Thanks to Glyx-Mash, even horses allergic to cereals can 

enjoy some mash. Mash serves as colic prevention, to support 

coat changing or help horses recover after digestive 

disorders – that is even true for mash without grains!

The striking characteristics of Western horses are their 

compact build and their innate clear-headedness. In order 

to feed Western horses - often very easy keepers - appropriately, 

a special feed design is required. 

NUTRITIONAL CONCEPT 

for Western horses and muscle build-up 

NutriStar muesli, which is low in carbohydrates, is particularly 

suitable for Western breeds due to its special nutrient

FOR SPECIAL TYPES 

Western horses such as Quarter Horses or Appaloosas, as

Thus, their feeding ration needs to supply the muscles with 

the relevant nutrients while the energy level is kept low. If 

the demand is not met appropriately, bones, tendons, ligaments

In the long run, this might result in deficiencies and premature 

wear and tear. For that matter, other types of horses, 

for example young horses, will also benefit from low-carbohydrate

MUSCLE-RELEVANT INGREDIENTS

A small quantity of concentrates is enough for many horses

RECOMMENDATION 

Equigard is ideally suited as 

a maintenance feed during 

periods of convalescence. 

Sometimes less is more. However, this is not true for essential 

vital substances. Especially if disorders in the carbohydrate 

metabolism have already manifested themselves, 

as is the case with metabolic syndrome. For our easy 

keepers and heavy weights to receive all the nutrients 

they require for an active metabolism and healthy vitality 

despite their low energy requirements, a special, grainfree 

feed composition is necessary. 

FOR A GRAIN-FREE DIET 

Equigard has been designed for horses which need to 

receive feed that is low in sugar and starch due to metabolic 

diseases such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome, laminitis 

and Equine Cushing‘s Disease, or which are prone to these 

diseases due to their constitution. It is also suitable for 

horses with muscle diseases such as tying up, PSSM and 

rhabdomyolysis as well as stomach ulcers.

To supplement an adapted basic diet consisting of roughage 

and/or grass. No additional mineral feed is required 

when feeding at least 200-350 g per 100 kg body weight per 

day. This total amount of feed should be divided into several 

meals. If a lower dosage is used or in case of deficient supply, 

we recommend additionally feeding Glucogard or MicroVital. 

LESS STARCH – BETTER HEALTH 

Scientific studies show that non-structured carbohydrates 

such as cereal starch and sugar should be limited in the 

total feed ration of horses which suffer from diseases such 

as metabolic syndrome, laminitis and muscle problems 

such as tying up and PSSM. Equigard contains about 80 % 

less starch and sugar than oats and is thus ideally suited 

as a low-energy feed for sick horses or those prone to diseases. 

For performance horses and thin horses suffering 

from Equine Cushing‘s Disease, oils, oil seeds and fibres 

can serve as additional energy suppliers. We recommend a 

combination with Struktur E, linseed oil and/or HippoLinol. 

FEEDING METABOLISM 

To stabilise the insulin function as well as the carbohydrate 

and fat metabolism, vital substances such as magnesium, 

zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, 

lecithin and antioxidants such as vitamin E and fruit flavonoids 

are of particular importance.

The typical diet offered in most livery stables is roughage, 

oats and pellets. Just as well if this diet covers all the vital 

substances that are important for a healthy horse nutrition. 

Our Vollwertpellets is perfectly suitable for larger yards and 

serves as a versatile and efficient feed for the whole stable.

FEEDING IS SO SIMPLE 

“Vollwertpellets” is designed as a sole supplement to 

roughage. However, it can also be fed in combination with

is ideally suited to horses of all breeds and uses. “Vollwertpellets” 

does not contain any oats so is suitable for feeding

SUBSTANTIAL AND COLD-PRESSED 

Our production is based on the principles of wholesome 

nutrition concepts. This includes the particularly nutrient-protective 

pressing process of “Vollwertpellets” at 

temperatures below 40°C. Besides, we consistently refrain 

from using binders. More than 150 individual components 

offer the horse a broad spectrum of nutrients which can 

compensate for nutrient gaps in the roughage. 

FEEDING ECONOMICALLY 

The long-term use of the feed in large stables has demonstrated 

that it improves the horses’ feed conversion. The 

smaller quantity of concentrates spares the digestive 

system. The horses are lively and willing to perform, yet

Nucleotides: a new type of nutrients in horse feeding 

WHAT ARE NUCLEOTIDES? 

A further problem is that nucleotides from forage plants 

usually have low biological availability, which means that 

only a small percentage can be utilised by the horse. 

SUPPLEMENTATION WITH 

PSB ® NUCLEOTIDES RESULTS IN: 

Feeding carriage horses is just as 

demanding as carriage driving itself. 

Nucleotides are the natural basic elements of the genetic 

material (DNA) and its transmitter molecules (RNA). DNA, 

which can be found in every nucleus of every body cell, 

determines which external characteristics will be expressed, 

but also the performance ability of an organism. 

This hereditary potential is realised by the cell metabolism. 

Reading the DNA to transmit instructions to the 

metabolism is the task of the RNA molecules. 

NO CELL DIVISION 

WITHOUT NUCLEOTIDES 

For cells and tissues to regularly renew themselves and 

grow, enough nucleotides must be available as building 

elements for the DNA and RNA. To guarantee this, the 

organism uses various systems. Some of the required 

nucleotides are synthesised in the body, some are recycled 

from the DNA of worn body cells and, last but not 

least, some are absorbed from the cells of forage plants. 

However, these processes are limited and cannot be activated 

or accelerated, even if the demand increases. 

WHEN TO FEED NUCLEOTIDES? 

For a young and healthy organism, the internal and external 

nucleotide sources are usually sufficient. In the event 

of high physical demands, stress, illness, maternity or 

increasing age, however, nucleotides can become a limiting 

factor for cell division and cell regeneration. In these 

cases, highly bioavailable nucleotides that are offered via 

the feed can specifically activate and accelerate the cell 

division processes. They are designed to increase both 

the regenerative forces and the performance potential. 

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT 

THE PSB ® COMPLEX? 

The PSB ® complex represents a particularly well-developed 

form of nucleotide supplementation. After decades of research 

it has become possible to precisely align the composition

Both the performance and regenerative power of the body

FROM RESEARCH TO VICTORY 

KER’s research is targeted at improving horses’ health and 

constitution. In cooperation with St. Hippolyt as a partner 

for Germany, the high-performance feed Champions Claim 

was developed. The feed is based on a design low in starch 

but rich in fat and fibre, which leads to a lower increase in 

muscle lactate and carbon dioxide production. 

This results in better cardiac output and endurance, reduced 

sweating, improved breathing and fewer digestive 

disorders. On top of this, the lower insulin secretion and 

consequently the lower increase of cortisol levels improve 

the horses’ stress tolerance and inner calm. 

ONE PRODUCT - THREE USES 

Champions Claim is ideal for disciplines that require a mix of 

aerobic and anaerobic muscle metabolism, such as dressage,

should be looking for perfect solutions with regard 

to both husbandry and feeding. 

Studies have revealed that almost every third growing 

horse in Germany suffers from osteochondrosis dissecans 

(OCD), where fragments of cartilage become detached. 

This disease can be caused by both a lack of and an 

oversupply of particular nutrients. 

FURTHER CAUSES ARE:

The minerals are of predominantly organic and maritime 

origin from seaweed. The ratios of the trace elements are 

perfectly matched and allow foals to grow up without crises. 

Yeast, malt, linseed and certain herbs all support enzymatic 

digestion, which is developed in the first weeks of 

life, and help build up a resilient colonic flora. 

STRENGTHENED FOR LIFE 

Foals strengthened with Fohlengold are ideally prepared 

for the stressful weaning process. In addition, Fohlengold 

helps avoid premature wear and tear in adulthood. The foal’s 

specific nutritional needs are met entirely, and there is 

nothing to stand in the way of its harmonious and healthy 

development. 


To supplement the basic supply of mare’s milk, roughage and/ 

or grass, we recommend making Fohlengold freely available 

(600 g/day maximum) from the 3rd week of life up to the 3rd 

month. 

Foals with a final weight of approx. 600 kg receive approx. 600 

g of Fohlengold from month 4 onwards. The total amount of 

feed should be divided into several meals. From month 5, feed

The purpose of mineral feed is to balance the feed ration. The selection of the appropriate mineral 

feed is based on performance, type and feeding of the horse. A heavily pregnant broodmare has different 

mineral requirements than a cob-type horse in an inactive period of life. In general it is important 

to consider that no additional mineralisation will be necessary if St. Hippolyt basic feeds are fed 

within the recommended quantities. If the feed rations are not adapted to the recommended quantities 

or if any shortages or deficiency symptoms occur, additional mineralisation will be required. 

St. Hippolyt mineral feed is characterised by a wide range of ingredients which are naturally rich in 

vital substances. These include maritime components as well as brewer’s yeast, cereal germs and

Roughage – the basis of a balanced diet 

For horses, high-quality, diverse and aromatic roughage is not only a delicious feed, but a matter 

of survival. A regular, demand-oriented supply of roughage is a guarantee of the horse’s well-being 

and health. Quality roughage helps to protect the immune system and maintains the gut. Roughage 

is assumed to be base-generating, serves to regenerate the muscles and joints and has deacidifying 

properties even sport horses cannot do without.

The first and second cut of these natural meadows is carefully 

warm-air-dried immediately after mowing. This minimises

Horse owners often underestimate the calories their horse 

gets from roughage. A high intake of energy from roughage 

and fresh juicy grass can have dramatic consequences for 

horses, a species originally adapted to meagre living conditions. 

A lack of exercise, excessive levels of blood sugar

REDUCING THE RISK

opinion, this reduces the risk of laminitis. 

BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS UNDER CONTROL 

Thanks to its functional nutrients, Glucogard can make an 

important contribution in this respect. The glucose and insulin 

metabolism depends on B complex vitamins and minerals 

such as magnesium, zinc, manganese and trivalent chromium, 

among other things. Cell-protective vital substances 

such as vitamin E and selenium contribute to the integrity of

control. If these substances are not supplied by feeding in 

sufficient quantity, the body’s resilience against the outbreak

Disease (ECD). More than half of all “Cushing’s horses” 

are insulin resistant and prone to laminitis. This is why an

THE DESTRUCTION OF TISSUE 

Cell damage caused by free oxygen radicals is considered 

to be one of the main reasons for age-related problems 

today. In the case of Cushing’s syndrome, it is particularly
