Today’s research training,
for tomorrow’s needs
Scientific knowledge lies at the heart of the European knowledge
economy. We need researchers who not only make new
discoveries, but understand how to manage and fund research,
transfer knowledge to others and develop and manage their
innovative ideas for maximum social and economic benefit.
Employers seek people who are not only highly educated, but also
highly adaptable and able to transfer or make use of knowledge in
different roles and contexts – both academic and commercial.
The challenge for institutions providing PhD education is to equip
students with these skills without encroaching too much into the
time available to carry out research. ReMaT has been conceived
to address this challenge.

What is ReMaT?
ReMaT is an interactive, intensive workshop providing an
introduction to research management topics relating to exploitation
of knowledge and entrepreneurship, acquisition of grants and
project management delivered in such a way that it challenges
students to consider different perspectives on how they might use
their PhD education in a variety of career paths, and convince
others to hire them.
TuTech Innovation GmbH is owned jointly by
Hamburg University of Technology and the Free
and Hanseatic City of Hamburg with the mission
of promoting effective transfer and exploitation
of scientific and technical knowledge.

Who has developed ReMaT?
ReMaT has been conceived and developed by a partnership
comprising the Brussels Office of the Hermann von Helmholtz
Association of German Research Centres, the Science
Enterprise Centre at Oxford University’s Saїd Business School
and TuTech Innovation GmbH, the knowledge transfer arm of
Hamburg University of Technology. It has been developed and
piloted with funding as a Specific Support Action from the European
Framework Programme 6.
ReMaT – tried and tested
The content of ReMaT has been formed through consultation
with focus groups comprised of experienced and early-stage
researchers, senior industrial research managers, entrepreneurs
and PhD programme directors. The workshops have been piloted
at various locations in Europe with both participants and external
observers providing feedback. Participants to date have come
from 40 institutions and over 25 nationalities.
