AsNoted
Hello Fellow Alumni! Welcome to the September 2006 issue of the Owens Community College Alumni Association’s Encounters magazine.
It is with great pride and gratification that I write this, my last letter as President of the Alumni Association, to all of my fellow alumni.
Our Alumni Association has so many reasons to be proud. Over the past three years, we’ve organized and participated in a number of
signature events including four golf outings, three Mud Hens nights, three Outstanding Service Award Celebrations, three Backpack to the
Future community service projects, two volleyball alumnae games, two shopping trips, three whitewater rafting trips and three phonathons.
We have also had the privilege of selecting eight worthy recipients of the Alumni Legacy Endowed Scholarship.
As I reflect on my years as President, I thought I would share with you some of my most memorable moments:
• Representing the Alumni Association at President George W. Bush’s visit to campus.
• Attending our Mud Hens nights.
• Hosting our Outstanding Service Award Celebration events.
• Participating in Shop ’Til You Drop.
• Seeing my daughter become an Owens graduate.
The Alumni Association’s success is due, in large part, to our devoted Board of Directors who continuously
give of their time and energy. I feel very fortunate and privileged to have served with such wonderful
leaders. They truly care about Owens, and we are so lucky to have them representing us. Thank you
Alumni Association Board!
I would also like to give a huge thanks to Laura Moore, Owens Director of Alumni Relations. She is truly
the dynamo behind Owens’ Alumni Association, constantly giving her heart and soul to the Association.
She always has a plan, an idea and a “toolbox” full of solutions! She made my job as President so easy.
Thank you Laura Moore!
Lastly, I would like to thank the Foundation Board, Dr. Christa Adams, President of Owens
Community College, and Owens alumni for always being supportive and committed to the success of
the Alumni Association. That support has been truly inspirational and instrumental in our success.
Thank you!
In the next issue of Encounters, you will meet your new Alumni Association President, David Seeger,
whom you may recognize from his position on the Board of Directors, as President of Great Lakes
Credit Union, or from his work as an adjunct faculty member here at Owens. While I may no longer
hold the title of President, I do plan on continuing my involvement with the Alumni Association and
the community by serving as a director on the Board of Directors.
Thank you once again, alumni. I had such a wonderful time serving you! Go Owens!
Attention All Nursing Graduates:
Are your HESI and NCLEX study materials taking up too much room
on your bookshelves? Do you have your student uniform and lab coat
tucked away in your closet?
We have a solution for you!
There is great need for these items and Owens Student Nursing Association (SNA) is
always accepting donations. The Owens uniform and book recycling program offers
students uniforms, lab coats and books for a small cost. The money made at the end of
each semester is used for the purchase of nursing pins.
To date, funds generated have purchased 41 Owens nursing pins and have benefited
a large number of students. The pins are free to those who apply and submit an
essay. The long-term goal of this program is to purchase all nursing pins for
graduating classes.
What items can you donate?
• Gently-used uniforms and lab coats
• Textbooks, reference books
• HESI and NCLEX materials
(2nd semester students appreciate the
opportunity to purchase HESI books
for the interim exam)
• Any drug book or PDR’s
(including out-of-date materials)
How can you donate?
• Drop off donations at the Nursing Office
• Email the SNA at sna@owens.edu
Get out your comfortable shoes,
make a quick stop at the ATM and
let Owens Community College’s
Alumni Association take care of the
rest! The Alumni Association will
Owens Community College Assists School
Children with Backpack to the Future
Supply Drive
Owens Community College’s Alumni Association and Student
Government, in conjunction with Books-A-Million in Perrysburg,
recently brightened many children’s lives through a unique
community service endeavor titled, “Backpack to the Future.”
Over 250 backpacks and nearly 3,200 school supply items collected
throughout the summer months were presented to area schools
and organizations, which included Chase Elementary, Lagrange
Elementary and Fulton Elementary schools in Toledo, Northview
Primary School in Findlay and the Community Learning Center
of Wood County, which serves a total of six schools.
“The impressive response area residents and businesses have made
to the ‘Backpack to the Future’ supply drive is outstanding,” said
Kaye Koevenig, Owens community service chair of the Alumni
Association. “Many more underprivileged children will be able
to begin their school year with new educational resources.”
Over a period of four months, “Backpack to the Future” accepted
gently-used or new backpacks and new school supplies from area
residents to assist underprivileged kindergarten school children
throughout Northwest Ohio. In addition to backpacks, individuals
donated crayons, markers, bottles of glue, glue sticks, colored
pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled
covered composition books and Kleenex tissues.
The program also collected over $1,000 from community
members. The charitable donations were used to purchase
additional school supplies.
From left to right: Alumni Relations Assistant Preethy Manickam, Alumni
Relations Director Laura Moore and Alumni Board Member and Project
Chair Kaye Koevenig pose with donated supplies.
According to Laura Moore, Owens Director of Alumni Relations,
“Backpack to the Future” represents one of many outreach activities
that the Alumni Association has initiated within the past few years.
“Our focus as an organization is to provide value-added programs
and services that support the Owens mission and strengthen the
surrounding communities. With the expanded efforts and support
by Books-A-Million, the donations easily surpassed last year’s totals,
which is a great feeling,” she stated.
Whitewater Rafting Trip
On July 14, 2006, Alumni Association members departed
the Owens Toledo-area Campus for the third annual
Whitewater Rafting Trip. By the time the group arrived in
Oak Hill, W. Va., they were primed for the adventure.
Early Saturday morning, the 21-person group arrived at
Ace Adventure Center, which features 1,400 private acres,
bordering the 70,000-acre New River Gorge National River.
By 9:30 a.m., the participants, armed with helmets, paddles
and, most importantly, personal floatation devices – started
down the river.
Throughout the trip, the rapids changed from Class III
(moderate) to Class V (very challenging). The day ended
under the world’s longest “Single Span Arch” bridge at 876
feet above the river. For beauty and immense power, no
other eastern river compares to the Lower New.
The alumni crew agreed that the trip was “excellent”
yet again and looks forward to BIG water and BIG
fun again next year!
Mark your calendar for July 13-15, 2007, to join
the Association for its fourth annual Whitewater
Rafting Trip.
ALUMNI PROFILE – Steve Parks
Steve Parks, a 1991 Owens Community College electrical/electronics graduate, knows
what it takes to turn a dream into reality.
Steve, a Perrysburg native, graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1981. After high
school, he served four years in the United States Army where he gained experience as a
videotape editor – experience that would certainly come in handy later down the road. In
1986, Steve enrolled at Owens to further his education and gain hands-on experience in
electronics. Steve continued to work two jobs while pursuing his college degree. He was
determined to succeed.
“Going to school while working two jobs was definitely difficult at times,” Steve said.
“I really enjoyed the instructors I had at Owens. They helped me pull it together when
I needed a little guidance.”
In 1991, Steve graduated from Owens and worked at Buckeye CableSystem as a
part-time Master Control Operator where he had been employed since 1989. He was
promoted in 1992 to Lead Master Control Operator. Steve was again recognized for his
excellent job performance in 1993, when he was promoted to Supervisor of both Master
Control and TV5.
Steve remained Supervisor until 1998 when he was asked to become the Network
Operations Center Manager. As NOC Manager, he was responsible for designing,
rebuilding and managing the entire Network Operations Center. As successful as he
was, however, Steve could not get over the notion of someday owning his own business.
In June 2005, he left his career at Buckeye CableSystem for the pursuit of his lifelong
dream.
“After working more than 25 years for other businesses, I decided it was finally time to
pursue my dream of starting my own business,” Steve said. “With my passion for fine
wines, opening a wine and cigar store just seemed like a natural fit.”
With the help of his wife and co-owner, Paige, and a number of other friends and local
contractors, Steve opened Aficionado Wine & Cigars, Ltd. in the Shoppes at RiverPlace
in Perrysburg in September 2005. Now a successful business owner, Steve appreciates the
path he has taken and looks forward to serving the Northwest Ohio community for years
to come.
“I’ve gotten where I am today through hard work and dedication,” Steve said. “I learned a
lot of those attributes from life experiences I’ve had along the way.” Steve added, “Owens
gave me the confidence I needed to be successful in the working world. I especially would
like to thank Owens for helping me grow into a productive member of society.”
Steve, who enjoys fishing, hunting and golfing, currently resides in Perrysburg with
Paige and their two daughters, Riley (9) and Hannah (7).
