WHITE-TAILED DEER IN ALABAMA<br />

Although antler characteristics are commonly used, hunters<br />

can look for certain body size and shape characteristics to<br />

more accurately assess age in older bucks.<br />

1-1/2 year old buck<br />

- Resembles doe with antlers<br />

- Does not have swollen<br />

neck or muscular characteristics<br />

- Body is thin and lanky<br />

and legs look long<br />

- <strong>Of</strong>ten enters feeding areas<br />

earlier and tend to<br />

travel with doe family<br />

groups<br />

2-1/2 year old buck<br />

- Typically has a much<br />

larger build than a doe<br />

- Still visibly underdeveloped<br />

or not “filledout”<br />

- Limited amount of<br />

neck swelling during<br />

the rut<br />

- Waist is still thin<br />
