3 - Basal circumference is the distance
around the main beam approximately
halfway between the
burr and the brow tine. If the deer
does not have a brow tine, take this
measurement 1-inch above the
burr. Measure both antlers.
4 -Main beam length is measured
along the outside curve of the
main beam from the burr to the
tip of the antler. Measure both
antlers. If the majority of one
or both of the main beams are
missing, make a note of this on
the data sheet.
Some managers find it useful to record more in-depth antler
measurements. Many measure all aspects of a buck’s rack and determine
a Boone and Crockett score for all racked bucks. These
measurements include tine lengths and several circumference measurements,
in addition to the measurements mentioned above. Depending
on the type of deer management being practiced on a piece of property,
this may or may not be necessary.
