1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 2 hours<br />

prior to sample collection.<br />

2. Insert the Male urethral/NP swab, provided separately<br />

from the collection kit, 2-4 cm into the urethra using a<br />

rotating motion to facilitate insertion.<br />

3. Once inserted, rotate the swab gently using sufficient<br />

sufficient pressure to ensure the swab comes into<br />

contact with all urethral surfaces. Allow the swab to<br />

remain inserted for 3-5 seconds.<br />

4. Withdraw the swab<br />

5. Immediately place the swab into the M-4 transport tube<br />

Urine specimens for Males or Females:<br />

Urine not as sensitive of test as swab- do only if there<br />

is no other way to collect the sample.<br />

1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 2 hours<br />

2. Specimen should be collected in a plastic, preservativefree<br />

sterile urine collection cup with a secure lid<br />

3. Instruct the patient to catch the FIRST 10-50 mL of the<br />

urine stream. (You may want to mark the outside of the<br />

cup to show the desired volume.)<br />

Caution the patient not to begin urinating until the<br />

collection cup is in position.<br />

4. Check the lid to make sure it is on tight before<br />

placing in a specimen transport bag.<br />

TUBE OR CONTAINER: M-4 transport media or tightly sealed sterile<br />

urine cup<br />

SPECIAL HANDLING: Indicate source; Female kits are distributed<br />

routinely. Request male swabs if needed.<br />

Do not use for medical legal purposes; order<br />

chlamydia cultures instead.<br />

For conjuctival specimens order a chlamydia FA<br />

(VCHLFA) or a chlamydia culture<br />
