1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 2 hours
prior to sample collection.
2. Insert the Male urethral/NP swab, provided separately
from the collection kit, 2-4 cm into the urethra using a
rotating motion to facilitate insertion.
3. Once inserted, rotate the swab gently using sufficient
sufficient pressure to ensure the swab comes into
contact with all urethral surfaces. Allow the swab to
remain inserted for 3-5 seconds.
4. Withdraw the swab
5. Immediately place the swab into the M-4 transport tube
Urine specimens for Males or Females:
Urine not as sensitive of test as swab- do only if there
is no other way to collect the sample.
1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 2 hours

2. Specimen should be collected in a plastic, preservativefree
sterile urine collection cup with a secure lid
3. Instruct the patient to catch the FIRST 10-50 mL of the
urine stream. (You may want to mark the outside of the
cup to show the desired volume.)
Caution the patient not to begin urinating until the
collection cup is in position.
4. Check the lid to make sure it is on tight before
placing in a specimen transport bag.
TUBE OR CONTAINER: M-4 transport media or tightly sealed sterile
urine cup
SPECIAL HANDLING: Indicate source; Female kits are distributed
routinely. Request male swabs if needed.
Do not use for medical legal purposes; order
chlamydia cultures instead.
For conjuctival specimens order a chlamydia FA
(VCHLFA) or a chlamydia culture
