FLUIDS: 10 mL fluid; submit in sterile screw-cap container<br />

SURFACES: Swab area with Culture Swab Plus<br />

WATER: Submit 10 mL water in sterile screw-cap container<br />

Food cultures are not performed at <strong>OU</strong> MEDICAL CENTER<br />

LABORATORY.<br />

HOSPITAL COMMENT: Environmental cultures must be approved by the<br />

Infection Prevention Department before the lab will perform test<br />

TUBE OR CONTAINER: Culture Swab Plus or sterile container<br />

SPECIAL HANDLING: When surface swabs are submitted, specify the<br />

potential pathogen under investigation. Specimens received that<br />

do not identify a specific pathogen will not be accepted.<br />

TURNAR<strong>OU</strong>ND TIME: 48 hours<br />

CLINICAL INFORMATION: For sterilzer check, order "Sterilizer<br />

Function Check, CULSTER"<br />

The Environmental Culture is intended to identify specific<br />

pathogens in the local facility under Epidemiological<br />

investigation. This test is not appropriate as a general screen<br />

for sterility of an object or surface.<br />

[CULEYE] Eye Cult & Gram Stain<br />

SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Swab or plated specimen<br />

COLLECTION OF SPECIMEN:<br />

CONJUNCTIVA OR LIDS: Collect with culturette or with Dacron<br />

wire swab, if inoculating directly onto plated media<br />

(chocolate and blood agar plate)<br />

CORNEAL SCRAPINGS: Inoculate directly onto plated media<br />

(chocolate, blood agar plate, and thio broth)<br />

INTERNAL EYE (VITRE<strong>OU</strong>S/AQUE<strong>OU</strong>S): Inoculate directly onto<br />

plated media (chocolate, blood agar plate and thio broth) and<br />

slides. If eye washings are collected, submit cassette<br />

container.<br />

TUBE OR CONTAINER: Specified media<br />

SPECIAL HANDLING: Specify source and laterality; Deliver to lab<br />

immediately; Inclusion of patient clinical<br />

history and differential diagnostic<br />

considerations is very helpful<br />
