WATER: Submit 10 mL water in sterile screw-cap container
Food cultures are not performed at OU MEDICAL CENTER
LABORATORY.
HOSPITAL COMMENT: Environmental cultures must be approved by the
Infection Prevention Department before the lab will perform test
TUBE OR CONTAINER: Culture Swab Plus or sterile container
SPECIAL HANDLING: When surface swabs are submitted, specify the
potential pathogen under investigation. Specimens received that
do not identify a specific pathogen will not be accepted.

The Environmental Culture is intended to identify specific
pathogens in the local facility under Epidemiological
investigation. This test is not appropriate as a general screen
for sterility of an object or surface.

SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Swab or plated specimen
COLLECTION OF SPECIMEN:
CONJUNCTIVA OR LIDS: Collect with culturette or with Dacron
wire swab, if inoculating directly onto plated media
(chocolate and blood agar plate)
CORNEAL SCRAPINGS: Inoculate directly onto plated media
(chocolate, blood agar plate, and thio broth)
INTERNAL EYE (VITREOUS/AQUEOUS): Inoculate directly onto
plated media (chocolate, blood agar plate and thio broth) and
slides. If eye washings are collected, submit cassette
container.
TUBE OR CONTAINER: Specified media
SPECIAL HANDLING: Specify source and laterality; Deliver to lab
immediately; Inclusion of patient clinical
history and differential diagnostic
considerations is very helpful
