OUCOM – DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE
The Department of Family Medicine was one of the founding departments when the Ohio
University College of Osteopathic Medicine was created in 1976. It is a diverse group of
physicians, psychologists and educators who provide high quality clinical services,
educational activities at all levels of the learning continuum and research. This document
will briefly show who we are and what we do.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Family Medicine is the largest clinical department within the Ohio
University College of Osteopathic Medicine. The departments’ mission is:
to serve as role models and teachers of undergraduate medical students at all levels of
training;
to serve as trainers of postgraduate students;
to provide high quality clinical services to the residents of southeastern Ohio;
to advance research done in the setting of an osteopathic medical college.
STRUCTURE
The department is structured to reflect the academic, research, and clinical services
provided. We are the home to the largest group of primary care physicians in the college.
We also serve as the base for physicians in the Section of Osteopathic Manipulative
Medicine and the Section of Emergency Medicine, as well as, psychologists in the section
of Psychosocial Medicine. We have recently added a Division of Faculty Development and
provide these services throughout the State. We provide numerous course coordinators,
course block team leaders, and facilitators. Faculty members provide educational content
from the first day of medical school throughout the final year of residency training.

In addition, the department houses predoctoral fellowships in family medicine and
osteopathic manipulative medicine, and employs Osteopathic Manipulation Teaching

THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Teaching, Research, and Service remain the missions of the Department of Family
Medicine.
Teaching
During the last year, Academic loads have increased with more Department of Family
Medicine faculty members in leadership positions within the curriculum. The
Department and the ARHI Diabetes Center continue and maintain the Primary Care
Fellowship in Diabetology. A Family Medicine faculty member, Jay Shubrook, completed
the fellowship,and is now the Director of the Diabetes Fellowship.
Research
The Department has instituted a structure to reward faculty for publication of peer
reviewed articles and externally funded grant submissions. Clinical research continues
to increase pace and health services research is expanding with cooperation with the
Office of Research and the Appalachian Rural Health Institute.
Service
Faculty continue to support community service obligations with committee assignments
within local, State, National and International organizations. The Department supports
and staffs the free clinic in association with the College’s community service program.
Communication
The Department of Family Medicine maintains an active website with faculty
information. In addition, two webpages have been added this year for the Family
Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Fellowships

FAMILY MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The Family Medicine Fellowship is a two-year undergraduate program designed to provide
interested osteopathic medical students with additional educational opportunities. It is designed
to promote interest in Osteopathic medical education, and is intended to enhance the
development of future teachers of Family Medicine. Fellows follow a core academic experience
including clinical work, teaching within the curriculum and development of a major project (i.e.
research, curricular, or Masters in Public Health). Fellows are encouraged to explore new
avenues and develop their own project interest, with the goals of a publication and a
presentation. Tracy Marx, DO is the program director and Michelle Bobo is the program
coordinator.
In 2009 a website was set up for the Family Medicine Fellows that includes a handbook, as well
as, current Fellows’ photos and contact information.

OMM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE
OMM fellows have been actively involved in the year 1 and year 2 OMM training programs.
They lead labs, give lectures, been table trainers, and assessed students during OMM practicals
throughout the year. They lead review sessions and journal clubs at various times. The OMM
fellows have been involved in several research projects through the Virtual Haptic Back
program, a Brentwood Foundation grant and collaborations with various faculty. This has been
a significant added responsibility in the last year and the OMM fellows have risen to the
challenge. OMM fellows have participated in OMM clinic with evaluation and treatment of
OUCOM faculty and staff. They have rotated with OMM section faculty. The fellows have
provided assistance and valuable ideas for curriculum revision. The OMM fellows make
themselves available for educational evaluation and treatment sessions for the year 1 and year 2
students on a regular basis. Sometimes this is part of the tutoring process. Overall, the OMM
fellows are important contributors to the OMM Section mission in the process of refining their
OMM skills under faculty direction – evaluation and treatment, teaching and research. Given all
of the preceding, the OMM fellows are clearly an invaluable part of the OMM section and our
drive to enhance our part in the accomplishment of OUCOM’s mission of Osteopathic excellence.

OMM TEACHING ASSISTANT PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE
The OMM Teaching Assistant Program was a success for 2008-2009. The feedback from Year 1
students about the OMM TA program continues to be very positive. The OMM TA’s are clearly
role models for the students just behind them. We had twenty-one Year 2 Teaching Assistants
helping in the Year 1 labs. These assistants participated in a noon pre-lab review presented the
Monday before each year 1 lab. For 2008-2009 there were thirty-nine applicants. The rest were
placed upon an alternate list. Alternates are invited to attend the pre-lab sessions for review
purposes. The OMM section is encouraging TAs to be proactive and to challenge the student’s to
deepen their understanding of the material. Many are very good at this. We are working to
make all TAs even better.
The program will change for 2009-2010. It will be a for-credit honors class. We have nineteen
students who will participate in the upcoming year. There will be the same participation as for
the previous paid TA program, but with the addition of journal clubs and additional advanced
teaching sessions.
