Peter Johnson, Ph.D. Three OU-COM professors retire after 81 years of collective service David Stroh, D.O. William Duerfeldt, D.O. David Stroh, D.O. associate professor of family medicine “The college has been a wonderful place to work, full of new adventures, great people and challenges. I’ve met lifelong friends here and had the opportunity to influence more than a few students.” Life after OU-COM “I’ll continue to teach one quarter each year and will continue my clinical practice in Coolville. I also plan to spend time reading, golfing, socializing and taking up new endeavors.” Peter Johnson, Ph.D. professor of biomedical sciences “As a founding faculty member at OU-COM, I have been very pleased about the way our college has matured and strengthened over the years. Not only in terms of teaching, but also in that the college has developed a strong research focus. I have so much enjoyed working with the different units in the college, and I’m sure that I’ll undergo withdrawal symptoms in the early years of my retirement.” Life after OU-COM “I’ll be moving to the mountains of western North Carolina, but will be back in Athens for the next few summers to continue teaching in the Prematriculation and Summer Scholars programs. In North Carolina, I plan to continue some of my research, writing and editing. And, I also want to do some volunteer tutoring in middle and high schools.” William Duerfeldt, D.O. associate professor of family medicine “I’ve been truly blessed to have had the opportunity to teach and practice medicine at OU-COM. It has been a privilege to share my experiences, and my patients, with the scores of medical students who rotated through my Nelsonville office these past 27 years. I think that is what I’m going to miss the most.” Life after OU-COM “My wife and I are moving to Asheville, N.C., and visiting family in Oregon this summer. We plan to spend 3-6 months each year—beginning in September—working in Jerusalem for the humanitarian aid organization “Vision for Israel.” 36 www.oucom.ohio.edu
