“Listening to doctors talk about the path they took in their career is a very educational experience because it helps students find their own paths,” says Tim Neely, a second-year medical student. Alumni on Campus This spring alumni talked about their work to OU-COM students during Career Medical Specialties Week and Minority Health Month. “There are many barriers to treating the under- and uninsured. Some of the barriers are cultural, but whatever they are, it prevents patients from seeing you, which means that they are less likely to receive appropriate care. To reach these people, you have to be a physician and a social worker.” –Tinisha Jordan, D.O. (’00), is a physician at Kaiser Permanente Marlow Heights Medical Center “I went to Honduras as an expert, and I returned to Athens a student looking to increase my knowledge.” Other advice: “Provide spiritual, medical and social help to people in need.” –David Drozek, D.O. (’83), is an assistant professor of surgery at OU-COM “If you don’t respect their traditions or cultural differences, then you can’t expect elderly minorities to respect your advice.” –Michael Gerardo, D.O.
