Os maxillare (Figs 4d-e & 6a; om). The maxilla forms<br />

the majority of the bony <strong>narial</strong> aperture <strong>in</strong> saiga. The<br />

caudally. On the lateral surface of the maxilla between the<br />

marg<strong>in</strong> (Fig. 5a; omti) just rostral to the tuber faciale<br />

serves as the skeletal attachment of the maxillolabial<br />

muscles (i.e. the levator labii superioris, the can<strong>in</strong>us, <strong>and</strong><br />

the depressor labii superioris). These muscles fan out<br />

along the lateral side of the proboscis, act<strong>in</strong>g to compress
