Introduction
Just as no two feet are alike, no two foot surgeries have the
same fixation needs. Designing a better foot plating system
means creating a plate that can adjust to these differences.
The comprehensive VariAx Foot Locking Plating System uses
SmartLock technology to expand your surgical options.
This patented mechanism allows polyaxial locking, and nonlocking
screw placement, all in the same screw hole.
With more options for screw placement, you now have more
choices on how to best treat each patient. Also, the low profile
design of each plate helps to minimize soft tissue irritation.
Locking Options
• Polyaxial Locking
SmartLock technology goes
one step further. VariAx Foot
Locking Plates permit polyaxial
screw placement. Locking
screws can be angled up to up
to ±15° in any direction for a
total range of 30°. Simply place
the Polyaxial Drill Guide in
the screw hole to select the
appropriate angle. Each plate
can accommodate a variety of
locking or non-locking screws
at various angles to allow you
to easily adjust to the particular
needs of each patient.
Locking Options
• Comprehensive Locking
and Non-Locking System
VariAx Foot Locking Plates
incorporate the SmartLock
polyaxial locking technology.
As a locking screw is inserted
into a screw hole, the harder
Grade 5 titanium screw
forms its own threads within
the Grade 2 titanium plate.
Each hole also accepts
non-locking screws, thus
also allowing conventional
non-locking screw fixation.
With a single plate come
many options. The genius of
SmartLock is its simplicity.
• Low Profile Plate Design
Each VariAx Foot plate
has a low profile (1−1.5mm
thickness) to minimize soft
tissue irritation. The screw
heads also are designed for
minimal head prominence,
even when inserted at angles
up to ±15°. This further
reduces the risk of soft tissue
irritation.
Other Features
• Compression and Locking in One Step
• Deluxe or Basic Configurations
• Modular System Design
• Color Coding of Instruments and Implants
The SmartLock Locking Technology is patented (US 6,322,562;
DE 43 43 117; EP 1 143 867) by Professor Dietmar Wolter, Hamburg, Germany.
