Allied <strong>Health</strong>care<br />

Scholarship Program<br />

Established in 1993, this program is funded through Kaiser Permanente, grants and<br />

contributions from public and private agencies, foundations, corporations,<br />

and individuals. These funds seek to increase the number <strong>of</strong> medical assistants,<br />

pharmacy, imaging, and radiology technicians, as well as a variety <strong>of</strong> other allied<br />

healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in the medical field.<br />

• The Allied <strong>Health</strong>care Program awards pr<strong>of</strong>essionals that practice direct<br />

patient care via scholarships <strong>of</strong> up to $4,000 per year in exchange for <strong>10</strong>0<br />

volunteer hours or one year <strong>of</strong> service in a medically underserved area.<br />

Mental <strong>Health</strong> Practitioners<br />

Loan Repayment Programs<br />

Awards are funded through a surcharge on biennial licensure renewals for<br />

Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Licensed Clinical Social<br />

Workers as well as Mental <strong>Health</strong> Services Act (MHSA):<br />

• Licensed Mental <strong>Health</strong> Services Provider Education Program increases the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> licensed mental health providers available to provide direct patient<br />

care in a publicly funded or public mental health facility, a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it private<br />

mental health facility, or in a mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essions shortage area via loan<br />

repayments up to $15,000 for two years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

Vocational Nurses<br />

Scholarship and Loan Repayment Programs<br />

These programs are funded through a surcharge on biennial licensure renewals:<br />

• Vocational Nurse Scholarships increase the number <strong>of</strong> vocational nurses<br />

via scholarships up to $4,000 per year for two years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

• Licensed Vocational Nurse to Associate Degree Nursing Scholarships<br />

increase the number <strong>of</strong> licensed vocational nurses who pursue an<br />

associate degree in nursing via scholarships up to $8,000 for two<br />

years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

• Licensed Vocational Nurse Loan Repayments increase the number <strong>of</strong><br />

licensed vocational nurses via loan repayments up to $6,000 for two<br />

years <strong>of</strong> service working in a medically underserved area.<br />

Registered Nurses<br />

Scholarship and Loan Repayment Programs<br />

These programs are funded through a surcharge on biennial licensure<br />

renewals:<br />

• Associate Degree Nursing Scholarships increase the number <strong>of</strong> nurses via<br />

scholarships up to $<strong>10</strong>,000 per year.<br />

• Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing Scholarships increase the number <strong>of</strong> nurses<br />

working in medically underserved areas via scholarships up to $13,000 per<br />

academic year for a two year service commitment.<br />

• Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing Repayments increase the number <strong>of</strong> nurses<br />

working in medically underserved areas via loan repayments up to $19,000<br />

for a four-year service commitment.<br />

• Mental <strong>Health</strong> Loan Assumption Program increases the number <strong>of</strong> mental<br />

health providers serving in a hard-to-fill position in the public mental health<br />

system via loan repayments up to $<strong>10</strong>,000 in exchange for one year <strong>of</strong> service<br />

in a medically underserved area.<br />

Other <strong>Health</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />

• <strong>Health</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Education Scholarships increase the number <strong>of</strong> Dentists,<br />

Dental Hygienists, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Physician<br />

Assistants via scholarships up to $<strong>10</strong>,000 for two years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

• <strong>Health</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Education Loan Repayments increase the number <strong>of</strong> Dentists,<br />

Dental Hygienists, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Physician<br />

Assistants via loan repayments up to $20,000 for two years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

Physicians<br />

Awards are funded through a surcharge on biennial licensure renewals for osteopathic<br />

and allopathic physicians, funds from the Managed Care Administrative Fines<br />

and Penalties Fund as well as grants and private donations:<br />

• Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program increases the<br />

numbers <strong>of</strong> culturally competent physicians via loan repayments up to $<strong>10</strong>5,000<br />

in exchange for three years <strong>of</strong> service in a medically underserved area.<br />

• Orange County Pediatrics Specialties Physician Loan Repayment Program<br />

increases the number <strong>of</strong> pediatric specialists in Orange County via loan<br />

repayment up to $125,000 in exchange for three years <strong>of</strong> service in a medically<br />

underserved area.<br />
