Mission<br />

The <strong>Health</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Education <strong>Foundation</strong> provides scholarships, loan repayments, and programs to health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional students and graduates who are dedicated to providing direct patient care in California’s medically<br />

underserved communities.<br />

History<br />

Established in 1987, the <strong>Foundation</strong> is the state’s only non-pr<strong>of</strong>it foundation statutorily created to provide scholarships,<br />

loan repayments, and programs to health pr<strong>of</strong>essional students and graduates throughout California who agree<br />

to practice in medically underserved areas. The <strong>Foundation</strong>, housed in the <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Statewide</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Planning<br />

and Development, administers various programs across the healthcare delivery spectrum targeting allied health,<br />

nursing, mental health, medical, and other healthcare practitioners. Its outstanding track record <strong>of</strong> delivering<br />

healthcare providers to underserved areas <strong>of</strong> California has resulted in approximately 4,025 scholarship and loan<br />

repayment awards totaling more than $39 million to students and recent graduates practicing in 55 <strong>of</strong> California’s<br />

58 counties since December 1990.<br />
