Board of Trustees
Health Professions Education Foundation
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it
is my privilege to present the Health
Professions Education Foundation’s Report
for 2008 – 2010.
During the past three years, the Foundation
has been actively engaged in increasing access
to healthcare services via our scholarships
and loan repayments to students and health
providers. We have implemented two new
loan repayment programs for mental health
practitioners and pediatric specialists. In its
inaugural cycle, the Mental Health Loan
Assumption program received more than
1,250 applications and was only able to award
275 loan repayments. Our other programs
are similarly in high demand – from 2008 to
2010 the Foundation was able to increase its
funding by more than $24 million through
grants and licensure fees to meet this growing
demand, awarding 2,588 health professional
students and providers.
Even so, as the debate over healthcare reform
continues, the Foundation continues to make
significant strides that contribute to improved
healthcare access:
• Including additional eligible professions such
as the Clinical Nurse Specialists, Osteopathic
physicians and surgeons, as well as Geriatric
Specialists to the list of eligible scholarship
and loan repayment applicants.
• The Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship,
Bachelor of Science Nursing Scholarship, and
Loan Repayment Programs inclusion of veterans
when determining eligible candidates.
• Developing the Mental Health Loan
Assumption Program in partnership with
California’s Department of Mental Health.
• The Foundation received a $945,000 grant
from the Orange County First Five Commission
to develop and implement a pediatric
specialties loan repayment program.
The Board of Trustees and I look forward
to partnering with you to support health
professional students and graduates who
practice direct patient care in medically underserved
areas. I invite you to visit the Health
Professions Education Foundation’s Website at:
in “Giving Golden Opportunities!”
