Funding California’s health professionals do not reflect the state’s demographic, racial and ethnic composition. Latinos and African Americans are underrepresented in most health professions, which can negatively impact quality of care. 12 Health Professions Education Foundation Report 2008-2010
The Health Professions Education Foundation is positioned to address its mission of improving healthcare in underserved areas of California. With new leadership and a refined focus, we stand ready to increase access to healthcare services. There have been major developments in the Foundation’s portfolio in 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2008, the Foundation received $2.5 million from the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) to implement the Mental Health Loan Assumption Program, in partnership with California’s Department of Mental Health. In addition, the California State Legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger increased funding for registered nurse scholarships and loan repayments from $1.2 million to $1.7 million. The Foundation also secured a $2.5 million grant from PacifiCare/United Healthcare to fund various programs. In 2009, the California State Legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger created stable sources of revenue to the Steven M. Thompson Physicians Loan Repayment Program via a $25 mandatory licensing surcharge to physicians and funding from the Managed Care Administrative Fines and Penalties Fund totaling $1.5 million and $1 million, respectively. In 2010, the Foundation received a $945,000 grant from the Orange County First Five Commission to develop and implement a pediatric specialties physician loan repayment program. The Foundation would also like to honor the Board of Behavioral Science, the Board of Psychology, the Board of Registered Nursing, the Board of Vocational Nurse & Psychiatric Technicians, the Irvine Regional Hospital & Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, the Medical Board of California, the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, and Vitamin Cases Consumer Settlement Fund for their generous support throughout the years. The Foundation is staying on course, deepening its relationships with current funders, expanding the number of potential partners, and building support for new programs funded by permanent and stable sources of revenue. We encourage you to give the Foundation your financial support. Your contribution will have an immediate impact on the health of underserved communities throughout the state. Thank you for your continued support of the mission and vision of the Health Professions Education Foundation.
