Roosevelt lobby. Mazd,a equipment only.<br />
Eastman stock. Long, medium shots <strong>and</strong> closeups<br />
<strong>of</strong> hotel lobby. Night lighting. Char-acters in<br />
evening attire. Full figure <strong>of</strong> dark-haired man in<br />
evening suit <strong>and</strong> dark-haired girl in light evening<br />
frock <strong>and</strong> blonde lady in light evening gown.<br />
Dupont stock. Hotel Iobby with same series <strong>of</strong><br />
medium shots <strong>and</strong> close-ups as aboYe.<br />
Long shot <strong>of</strong> lobby taken with Akeley c-amera,<br />
panninE around so as to show the system <strong>of</strong> lightings<br />
<strong>and</strong> the position <strong>of</strong> the different lights.<br />
This shot ii followed by a series <strong>of</strong> six Akeley<br />
shots demonstrating the lighting equipment used.<br />
REEL SIX<br />
LIGHT EFFECTS<br />
Subject No. 3. Possibilities <strong>of</strong> light effects with<br />
Mazda equipment,<br />
Test 81. Mazda. Medium shot <strong>and</strong> close-up.<br />
Crystal bowl gazer making passes over the bowl,<br />
which brightens <strong>and</strong> casts strong light on the character.<br />
The light is increasing <strong>and</strong> diminishing gradually<br />
<strong>and</strong> has been controlled solely by a resistance.<br />
This light effect has been obtained through the<br />
working <strong>of</strong> the Mazda light <strong>and</strong> not by any camera<br />
trick.<br />
Test 5. Mazda. Long shot. Interior livingroom<br />
with arch <strong>and</strong> staircase in background. Night lighting.<br />
Brackets <strong>and</strong> ceiling lamp lit.<br />
- Light-haired<br />
man <strong>and</strong> dark-haired girl, he in dark business suit,<br />
she in black velvet drcss. Sudden change <strong>of</strong> lig:hts'<br />
Wall brackets <strong>and</strong> hanging lamp go out. Staircase<br />
beyond archway ,stays<br />

dark-haired lady wearing evening gown with white<br />
bodice <strong>and</strong> black skirt. Strong light <strong>and</strong> shadows<br />
effect. Plain background broken by light <strong>and</strong><br />
shadow effect.<br />

room in darkness, shaft <strong>of</strong> light coming- through<br />
window. Butler enters, turns on wall brackets.<br />
Young man in street attire enters, sits in armchair<br />
in foreground, turns on reading lamp. Lady enters;<br />
they exit.<br />

in long shots. Long shot <strong>and</strong> close-up. Living room.<br />
Full night lightings, lighted wall brackets <strong>and</strong> lighted<br />
reading lamp in foreground. General mass <strong>of</strong><br />
lightings in background. Foreground semi-silhouetted.<br />
Dark-haired man <strong>and</strong> blonde girl in evening<br />

Test 35. Mazda. Semi-long shots. Library.<br />
Night lightings, lighted c<strong>and</strong>elabra <strong>and</strong> indication<br />
<strong>of</strong>-overhead fixture. Room fully lig:hted. Lights<br />
are paftially turned <strong>of</strong>f. Young man <strong>and</strong>. gjrl in<br />
love-scene,-hearing steps, turn lights partially otr<br />

Iight from room behind archway. Couple in evening<br />
attire entets. Reading lamp turned on, then<br />
wall brackets are turned on, bringing the room into<br />
full night lighting.<br />
Test 59. Mazda. Medium shot. Living room.<br />
Dim lighting. Strong light in room beyond door.<br />
Couple enters <strong>and</strong> exits from scene, their shadows<br />
cast-upon wall. The whole scene played in shadow<br />
effects.<br />
Test 68. Mazda. Longshot. Entrance hall.<br />
Very dim general light. Girl enters from door<br />
casting a shaft <strong>of</strong> light into room' She half closes<br />
door <strong>and</strong> inspects room with aid <strong>of</strong> flashlight. Lights<br />
a cigarette, thowing actinic value <strong>of</strong> the flame <strong>of</strong><br />
the match.<br />
Test 69. Mazda. Semi-close-up. Blonde girl in<br />
light evening gorvn supposedly conversing with -a<br />
man who is out <strong>of</strong> the picture, but whose shadow is<br />
cast on the wall.<br />

darkness. Strong shaft <strong>of</strong> light coming through<br />
door. Dim moonlight on window in back wall'<br />
Girl in evening dress enters scene, tutns on lights,<br />

figure against wall Iighted by well defined source<br />
<strong>of</strong> tight iasting a sharp shadow on the wall'<br />

REEL SEVEN<br />
COLOR CHART<br />
This reel contains a series <strong>of</strong> tests <strong>of</strong> a color<br />
chart. These tests <strong>of</strong> a purely technical nature have<br />
been made to ascertain:<br />
1. A comparison between daylight filtered<br />
through-Wratten light-filters <strong>and</strong> the following<br />
sources <strong>of</strong> artificial illumination: Whit'e<br />
Flame Arc. Panchromatic Carbon; Cooper-<br />
Hewitt Mercury Tubes, Cooper-Hewitt Mercury<br />
<strong>and</strong> Neon Tubes <strong>and</strong> Mazda lights. -<br />
2. Th; flter factor on the three stocks; Eastman,<br />
DuPont <strong>and</strong> Agfa.<br />
3. The'chromatic distortion obtained by the use<br />
<strong>of</strong> a Red <strong>and</strong> a Green filter combine.<br />
4. The influence <strong>of</strong> machine development on the<br />
above mentioned stocks.<br />
As the inspection <strong>of</strong> this reel is almost impossible<br />
in a projectiig room no master prin-t 9{ these tests<br />
has been made. Still photographs <strong>of</strong> tl-r.is chart covering<br />
the whole series-<strong>of</strong> tests are on display in the<br />
rooris <strong>of</strong> the American Society <strong>of</strong> Cinematographers.<br />
REEL EIGHT<br />
DEFECTS<br />
Subject No. 6. Mechanical defects <strong>of</strong> Mazda at<br />
the prLsent stage <strong>of</strong> advancement,- the most noticeable'<strong>of</strong><br />
which ire rings <strong>and</strong> streaks caused by lhe<br />
elements in spot equifiment-. T!is,.howeve!, is being<br />
reduced to a minimum, both by improved equipment<br />
<strong>and</strong> experience in h<strong>and</strong>ling. -<br />
