Aid for 25,000 people
Malteser International has worked in
Pakistan since the earthquake
on 8 October 2005.
Malteser International provided emergency
aid immediately after the severe
earthquake in Kashmir and North Pakistan.
Together with local partner organisations,
we carried out aid and reconstruction
Pakistan: Well-insulated corrugated iron accommodation helps families survive the winter in the earthquake
region.
measures in three project areas, directly
reaching around 2,700 families. In the
first few weeks, we distributed blankets,
winter-proof double-walled tents and
household objects, as well as food and
medicine. We then relocated people from
tents to snow-proof insulated corrugated
iron accommodation. These were transported
by helicopter under frequently
difficult weather conditions to mostly
inaccessible high mountain valleys.
In addition, we supported measures
for primary health care at individual
locations, as local state facilities in these
remote regions were often overextended
even before the disaster.
Our local partners have worked in North
Pakistan for a long time and have an indepth
knowledge of the socio-cultural
conditions and the authorities in the
region. This means our aid can quickly
reach those in need. Thanks to this local
expertise, further aid measures have been
and continue to be developed. In 2006,
our work will focus on the reconstruction
of earthquake-safe housing, securing
mountain farming, introducing incomegenerating
measures and primary health
care services.
Aid for 275,000 people
Malteser International has worked in
Sri Lanka since January 2005 in all
regions affected by the tsunami.
The contradictory prosperity levels of
the country are reflected in the coastal
regions affected by the tsunami in the
north, east and south of Sri Lanka. After
many years of civil war, socio-economic
indicators such as per capita income,
life expectancy and education access in
the north-east are far below the country
Sri Lanka: Project coordinator Maren Paech at the
laying of the foundation stone for new houses in
Seenanveli.
average. In order to ensure balanced
social, regional and ethnic distribution of
reconstruction aid, Malteser International
selected cooperation partners from the
various different society groups in Sri
Lanka. Almost every project was carried
out in cooperation with Sri Lankan partner
organisations.
Focuses include the reconstruction of
houses and the securing of a drinking
water supply – both immediately after
the tsunami and on a long-term basis. Up
until now, 650 temporary shelters have
been built and 100 houses have been
rebuilt or repaired. We are accompanying
these measures with community work
to promote village structures, as well
as psycho-social care for traumatised
tsunami victims. We are supporting
homes for children and the disabled and
promoting income-generating measures
e.g. by providing equipment for fishing
families.
2005 was also a year moulded by a tense
internal political situation. It was feared
that a new civil war would break out after
the presidential elections. Nevertheless,
we were able to continue our projects in
the north and east after brief disruptions.
After finishing construction projects,
Malteser International will concentrate in
2006 on income-generating measures and
sustainable concepts for drinking water
supply and sewage treatment. In addition,
support measures for children and young
people are currently being planned.
