TH E YE AR '76 ... THE FI RST STEP,
When thc " Merger or Champions" first took pl~cc, no one would have gucs!;Cd
thc corps we would become ; thc year .'c would be looking back upon now or,
more importanl, the fUlllre of SUCCeSS that now lies within our gr~sp,
Man y adjustments had to be made, nOt only 10 a new group of people, but to
different ideas and wa ys of doing things. This was dimcuh in the early part of
Ihc year bccaose we were without an identilY 10 bring us together. AI times I think
we all fell lost, nut knowing what WaS going to happen next. We were no longer a
part of a long·established Org;lnilation ... we were the basis of a beginning, and although
thi, was ex(iting, il was alw a liule frightening al limes. As always, thc summer
seemed a long way off.
As Ihe rehearsals settled into a pattern, I think we all gradually ruli7.ed, ju.t by
looking at the people around US, that this year WOuld require more from uS Ihan had
eVCf been demanded before. With Our si~e and talent, we knew Ihal we had greal
potcntial, the only problem was wherc we were going 10 end up laking il.
Doring the year our instructors and consultants spoke 10 uS many limes, explaining
whal OIJr aims and how we were going to achiC\'c them. Thi, guidance and encourage·
menl nOI only showed that they cared as much as we did aboul Ihe corps, il kepi uS
go ing and gave uS a g",,1 to work towards,"We were going 10 become a OCt Finalis\;
we were going 10 have Class. and we were going to be Impre~~i,e!"
BUI experience wa~ the t>eSI teacher, and with ~l moSI every show we were lurning
the dream into ~ r~alit y.
A~ we went lhrough the ri tual of pU1\ing on our uniforms, lhe pride stalled like ~
small pulse which grew as each of uS looked around at mirror images of ourselves.
The people were the same ones lhat each of uS had spent all year rehearsing wilh, and
sharing good and bad limes with; bUl somehow everyone t>egan to too~ • linle different.
Oh, we were brighler alright, (yellow is the colour of confidence) bul we were uller and
more sure of Qursel,cs, 100.
As we formed Ihe power block We became a uniled force, and as we started oul onlo
,

the field you could feel Ihe mength of that force driving through each one of us, like an
aimOSI vi~ible (definilely audible) current of e ectricity wrrounding the block.
Then we were out on the line before an audience an x iou~ly wailing wilh as much
anlicipation as we had for the gun 10 go off, ~nd when il did, whelher Ihe ligh ls were
on or nOI ... we sparkled ... and dOn'1 try !O lell me it W"l' only Ihe "niform, il
