<strong>Claiming</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Right</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Say</strong> <strong>No</strong><br />

bookstall and talked <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> girls who were running <strong>the</strong> business.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong>m replied when asked about <strong>the</strong> Israelis, that <strong>the</strong>y don’t<br />

buy many books but bargain a lot. Sometimes <strong>the</strong>ir boss drives<br />

<strong>the</strong>m away. Whereas <strong>to</strong>urists from o<strong>the</strong>r nations buy <strong>the</strong> books for<br />

<strong>the</strong> price offered <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Perception of Israeli Tourists by O<strong>the</strong>r Tourists<br />

I talked <strong>to</strong> a handful of <strong>to</strong>urists from Australia, US, UK and Russia. All of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m affirmed that Israelis are very rough and arrogant people, with an<br />

exception of few. Israelis don’t want <strong>to</strong> include o<strong>the</strong>rs in <strong>the</strong>ir group. One<br />

lady from UK said that most of <strong>the</strong> Israeli <strong>to</strong>urists can be found in Arambol<br />

and nearby beaches. She added that <strong>the</strong>y resort <strong>to</strong> fight even at <strong>the</strong><br />

slightest uneasiness caused <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. The o<strong>the</strong>r foreign <strong>to</strong>urists don’t like<br />

<strong>to</strong> stay in guest houses where <strong>the</strong> Israeli <strong>to</strong>urists stay.<br />

My Encounter with <strong>the</strong> Israelis<br />

For two days we collected information from secondary source. But after<br />

that we met <strong>the</strong> Israelis and talked with <strong>the</strong>m. The Israelis which I met<br />

were not very rich people but in our terms I would call <strong>the</strong>m middle class<br />

citizens of Israel. Most of <strong>the</strong>m worked as security guards and one of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

even disclosed his annual salary which was somewhat over $2000. Their<br />

government gives <strong>the</strong>m some money for holidays as soon as <strong>the</strong>y finish<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir military service. They have <strong>to</strong> serve in <strong>the</strong> army (a boy serves for 3<br />

years while a girl serves for 2 years) compulsorily. If <strong>the</strong>y try <strong>to</strong> escape,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y are ei<strong>the</strong>r beaten up or imprisoned. This military service begins<br />

at <strong>the</strong> age of 18, and after that <strong>the</strong>ir education.<br />

I asked <strong>the</strong>m about <strong>the</strong> relationship between Israel and Palestine. They<br />

say that Israel is a small well organized country and Palestinians want <strong>to</strong><br />

take away <strong>the</strong>ir country. The Palestinians come and stay and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y<br />

say that it is <strong>the</strong>ir country. They come <strong>to</strong> Jerusalem with bombs all over<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir body and just blow <strong>the</strong>mselves up claiming several lives. Then <strong>the</strong>y<br />

throw missiles on <strong>the</strong>m and kill <strong>the</strong>ir people heartlessly. I asked <strong>the</strong>m<br />

about what <strong>the</strong>ir government is doing about <strong>the</strong> situation. They say that<br />
