Russo’s Reflections…
Bible Institute
There will be no weekday Masses this week as I will be
attending Presentation Ministries Bible Institute in
Cincinnati, OH.
A Friendly Reminder
This is a gentle reminder for all of us to be aware of our
summer wardrobe when attending Mass on Saturday
evening or Sunday morning. Over the past few weeks I
have noticed some attire that is not appropriate for
Mass. I realize that this may be a sensitive concern for
some; however I want us all to think about what is our
purpose in coming to Mass week after week, month
after month, and year after year.
The Mass is to be a sacred and solemn celebration. It is
a time to praise our Lord, draw closer to Him, listen to
the voice of God through the proclamation of readings
and gospel and ultimately receive our Lord in the
Sacrament of the Eucharist. We want to be sure that
our manner of dress is reflective of that sacred
celebration. By dressing appropriately for Mass we are
reminding ourselves of the importance of this
celebration.
In our dress we send a message to our brothers and
sisters when we gather as the body of Christ around the
table of the Lord. We also send a message to God
about our dress. I understand that God accepts us as
we are, however we must also remember that God
challenges us as we grow in faith. Jesus said, “Be
perfect just as your heavenly Father is
perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) God deserves our best, not
our leftovers.
There is proper attire for every occasion, whether we
are playing 18 holes of golf, going to the beach, job
interview, family reunion, wedding, funeral, business
meeting, formal or informal dinner, sporting event,
night out with friends, etc. We wear the proper clothing
for the event or gathering we are attending. Should it be
any different when we gather for Mass? Would we go
to the beach in a suit and tie? Would we walk into a job
interview wearing shorts, flip-flops and a t-shirt?
I simply want to remind all of us to be aware of our
dress for Mass. May our clothing be reverent to our
Lord and respectful to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

BLOOD DRIVE - Thanks to all who volunteered to
make the Blood Drive a success, especially Susie Knoll,
Shirley Ehrlich and Kathy Healy who helped with making
phone calls. A special thanks to all who came out to
donate blood and goodies. The blood drive wouldn’t be
successful without you and those who volunteer
throughout the day. You are truly appreciated.
BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE - School supply donations
for Catholic Charities foster children are needed and this is
a good time to watch for the sales. Items needed are
backpacks, folders, notebooks, paper, pencils, pencil
sharpeners, highlighters, erasers, pens, rulers, calculators,
pencil boxes, markers, colored pencils, glue, glue sticks
scissors and crayons. We are also accepting new underwear
including socks in youth and teen sizes. Donations will be
accepted through August 7th. Please place your donations
on the table in the Commons.
GOD’S KITCHEN MEALS ON WHEELS, held in
downtown Grand Rapids, needs volunteers on Sunday,
July 30th from 9 - 10 a.m. This is a great project for
families, and those as young as 4 years old can help
provide food for those in need. Please call Julie @ 874-
6841. You will need to make a reservation for this project.
CAREER SUPPORT - If you are unemployed/
underemployed or hoping to change jobs consider the
Career Support Ministry. We support you in locating a
position available in the area through our parishioners who
are in the work field. Job Seeker #95 Motivated, hard
working mechanical engineer looking to be an effective
part of your company in the technology sector. Recent
grad with experience as Computer Programmer and
Information Systems Assistant. BS in Engineering with a
Mechanical Concentration and minor in Computer
Science. Anxious to use my talents to benefit your

NORTH KENT COMMUNITY SERVICES needs
your help to stock their pantry for kids. Cereal, granola
bars, pop tarts, fruit snacks, jam and peanut butter,
healthy snacks and boxed dinners are needed. Also needed
are personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste,
toilet paper, deodorant, laundry soap, softener, Kleenex,
feminine hygiene items, razors, shaving cream, baby
powder, baby wash, baby shampoo, disposable diapers, etc.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN / VIRTUS
Any volunteer over the age of 18 who has regular contact
with children must attend a Protecting God’s Children
Awareness session. This includes Youth Ministry
volunteers, Children’s liturgy of the Word Ministers,
Catechists, Nursery helpers, Coaches and School volunteers.
With the new school year not too far off this is a
good opportunity for those adults wishing to volunteer
to complete this requirement now. The next session is
at Monday, July 25, 6:00 PM @ St. Mary Magdalene
Parish, Kentwood, MI. On-line registration prior to
attending is needed. Go to www.virtus.org and click on
the word “Registration” on the left side of the page.
Healing Mass held on the first Wednesday of the month
(Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 5) at 7PM in St. Alphonsus Church, 224
Carrier St NE, Grand Rapids. All are welcome who are living
with physical, emotional and spiritual chronic and/or lifethreatening
illnesses; and their caregivers, family and friends.

apart and rest awhile. Be present to us as we rest.

to be more present to each other and to you, to slow
down, to know we are loved, and to love you and one
another more deeply. Let us return to our work renewed.

SERVE GOD WITH GLADNESS!
What: Training sessions for new and current altar servers.
Registration is required. Each session is limited to 20 participants.

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound - Jesus always
showed concern for those who were ill. The concern
that Christ showed for the bodily and spiritual welfare
of those burdened by illness is continued by the Church
in its ministry to the sick.
If you or a loved one is hospitalized or homebound
please contact the parish office. Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion are available to bring
prayer, presence and the Eucharist to those who are
homebound or in long-term facilities.
Low Gluten Host Available - It has been brought to
our attention that a number of children and adults are
unable to receive communion because they have gluten
intolerance and/or wheat allergies. We now have
available a low gluten (0.01%) host that has been
approved by the American Bishops. If you are unable
to receive the normal host, please come to the offertory
table before Mass, and let an usher or server know that
you would like to receive a low gluten host. Then at
Communion time, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion will stand near the same table and
distribute the Body of Christ to you. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact the parish office or
