Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC gives the very best local talent the chance to learn, work, rehearse and perform alongside
some of the UK’s leading theatrical stars.
During May and June, hundreds of people auditioned to be a part of Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC 2011 and appear in
West Side Story. Like last year, the creative team were hugely impressed by the standard of talent and energy at the
auditions - choosing the cast that you will see perform today was an extremely difficult decision.
The members of Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC come from all over the world and have a range of experience, but what
they have in common is their energy, raw talent and commitment. They are joined by four extraordinarily talented
performers from London’s West End, Soprano Elisa Doughty as Maria, Michael Rouse as leading man Tony, Shona White
as the fiery Anita, and Julian Essex-Spurrier reprising his role as Riff, which he has previously played in the UK and
European tours of the show. Eight breathtaking Latin dancers from the BNF Dance Company complete this amazing cast.
We hope that you will enjoy this classic musical as much as we have enjoyed making it!
Welcome to WEST SIDE STORY
Welcome to DUCTAC, and to Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC’s second annual summer production: West Side Story.
We are thrilled to be bringing one of the most acclaimed musicals in Broadway history to the stage here in Dubai.
West Side Story is the unforgettable musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet that changed musical theatre forever, and I’m sure
that every member of Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC will agree that being a part of this fantastic show has changed their lives.
At DUCTAC, we are passionate about providing creative opportunities for young people and we strive to lay the foundations for
the cultural growth and future of Dubai. Working with the creative team and professional performers on this show has been a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of our cast members and we are so proud to be able to showcase the incredible talent
that exists in the UAE.
I’d like to extend my personal thanks to our creative team Joe, Sarah, Mike, and Jaimie for their professionalism, hard work
and dedication, not only in making the show look and sound incredible, but in providing education and experiences that the
Academy members will remember for the rest of their lives.
We are honoured, once again, to be welcoming some of the leading lights of the UK theatre scene to Dubai. Elisa, Michael,
Shona and Julian are truly world class performers who in sharing their experience and talent have been a huge inspiration
to the members of the Academy. We are also thrilled to be welcoming members of the BNF Dance Company to the stage here at
DUCTAC – having been lucky enough to see them rehearsing I can tell you that their moves really are awe-inspiring!
At DUCTAC we are continuing to build on our International relationships, and we have welcomed two interns from the Arts,
Event and Stage Management course at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts into the West Side Story team. They
have been a huge asset to the production and we very much hope that our relationship with HKAPA will continue and grow in
the future.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of DUCTAC’s patrons, supporters, honorary board
members, partners and sponsors, particularly Majid Al Futtaim Holding and Mall of the Emirates for their ongoing support and,
of course, Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment. I also wish to thank the entire team at DUCTAC for their hard work,
support and commitment throughout the year.
SYNOPSIS
ACT 1
The production opens with a danced Prologue indicating the bitter tensions between
the Jets, a self-styled “American” street gang, and the Sharks, a group of young Puerto
Ricans. The leader of the Jets, Riff, swears to drive the Sharks, led by Bernardo, from the
streets (Jet Song). Riff determines to challenge Bernardo that night at a dance in the
gym, and prevails upon his old friend and the co-founder of the Jets, Tony, to help him.
Tony has been growing away from the gang, and feels the stirrings of other emotions
(Something’s Coming) but agrees.
Bernardo’s sister Maria, newly arrived from Puerto Rico to marry his friend Chino,
attends the dance (The Dance at the Gym) and despite the obvious hatred between the
gangs meets Tony, who at once falls in love with her (Maria). Later, after the dance, while
the gangs begin to assemble at Doc’s drugstore to choose a place and weapons for their
rumble - a gang fight - Tony visits Maria on the fire escape of her apartment, and they
pledge their love (Tonight), promising to meet the next evening at the bridal shop where
Maria works. As he departs, the Sharks take their girls home and go off to the drugstore,
while a playful argument develops between Anita and Rosalia over the relative merits of
life back home and in Manhattan (America).
At the drugstore, the Jets are nervous about the approaching meeting with the Sharks,
but Riff advises them to play it cool (Cool), and when the Sharks arrive, an agreement
is reached, at Tony’s insistence, to have a fair, bare-handed fight between the two best
fighters in each gang the next night, under the highway. Next day, Tony visits Maria at
the shop and among the clothing dummies they enact a touching wedding ceremony (One
Hand, One Heart). Maria makes him promise to stop the fight between his gang and her
brother’s. In the quintet Tonight, Tony and Maria sing of their love, Anita makes plans
for a big evening, and Bernardo and Riff and their gangs make their own plans for the
rumble.
In a deserted area under the highway, the gangs meet for the fight. As it is about to get
under way, Tony hurries in, and begs them to stop, as he has promised Maria that he
will stop the fight. Bernardo, enraged that Tony has been making advances to his sister,
pushes him back furiously. Suddenly switch-blade knives appear, and Riff and Bernardo
begin to fight (The Rumble). In the ensuing action, Riff is stabbed, and Tony, grabbing his
weapon, in turn stabs Bernardo, killing him. Frenzied, the gangs join battle, until they are
interrupted by a police whistle. They flee, leaving behind the bodies of Riff and Bernardo.
ACT 2
Maria is gaily preparing for her meeting with Tony (I Feel Pretty). She is unaware of
what has happened, until Chino bursts in and tells her that her brother has been killed
by her lover. Seizing a gun, he rushes out in search of Tony. Tony comes to meet Maria
and confess his crime so he can turn himself in to Officer Krupke. In spite of her grief
Maria is unable to send him away. Clinging together desperately they envision a place
where they can be free from prejudice (Somewhere). In the streets and alleys the gangs
flee the police, panic-stricken by the killings. Two of the Jets, Baby John and A-Rab, have
already been questioned, and they explain to the rest of them how to handle the adults
(Gee, Officer Krupke!).
Anita knocks at Maria’s bedroom door, forcing Tony to leave by the window. He heads
to Doc’s drugstore taking refuge in the basement. Anita confronts Maria for allowing
Tony to come near her (A Boy Like That), but Maria’s answer (I Have a Love) carries
irrefutable force, and Anita, convinced of the love between Maria and Tony, agrees to help
Maria by going to Doc’s drugstore to warn Tony that Chino is seeking revenge. She goes
to the drugstore, but is mocked and harrassed. In response to their treatment towards
her, Anita lies and spits out a different message for Tony: that Chino has killed Maria in
revenge.
Will Tony find out the truth before it’s too late?
