<strong>Opera</strong> North West Ltd proudly presents <strong>the</strong> tenth production of <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paddock</strong>.<br />

<strong>the</strong> performers<br />

Peta Blyth OAM<br />

Soprano<br />

Peta Blyth studied at <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Queensland graduat<strong>in</strong>g with a First Class<br />

Honours degree <strong>in</strong> Music. She was awarded<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sir Henry Abel Smith Scholarship and<br />

studied at <strong>the</strong> Royal College of Music,<br />

London, complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Royal College of<br />

Music <strong>Opera</strong> Course.<br />

Return<strong>in</strong>g to Australia, she performed with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Australian <strong>Opera</strong>, mak<strong>in</strong>g her pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

role debut <strong>in</strong> Brian Howard’s Metamorphosis<br />

directed by Graeme Murphy. Subsequent<br />

roles with <strong>the</strong> Australian <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

Papagena <strong>in</strong> The Magic Flute, Sophie <strong>in</strong><br />

Wer<strong>the</strong>r, Barbar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> The Marriage of Figaro,<br />

Chava <strong>in</strong> The Fiddler on <strong>the</strong> Roof, First Niece<br />

<strong>in</strong> Peter Grimes and Jano <strong>in</strong> Jenufa.<br />

Among her numerous understudies was<br />

<strong>the</strong> title role of Marie <strong>in</strong> The Daughter of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Regiment performed by Dame Joan<br />

Su<strong>the</strong>rland. Peta has also performed with <strong>the</strong><br />

Lyric <strong>Opera</strong> of Queensland, <strong>in</strong> Hong Kong<br />

and <strong>in</strong> New Zealand as Mus<strong>in</strong> La Boheme.<br />

As a concert artist, she has appeared as a<br />

soloist with <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony and<br />

Philharmonic Orchestras and <strong>the</strong> Seymour<br />

Group <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> title role of Sculthorpe’s<br />

Eliza Fraser.<br />

Peta comb<strong>in</strong>es a career of perform<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g, adjudicat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> addition to<br />

organiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paddock</strong> and<br />

extend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> activities of <strong>Opera</strong> North<br />

West. With pianist David Miller, Peta released<br />

<strong>the</strong> CD Blyth Spirit on <strong>the</strong> Grevillea Label. In<br />

2010, she was awarded an OAM <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Queens’ Birthday Honours List for<br />

contribution to <strong>the</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g arts,<br />

particularly opera.<br />

Annabelle Chaffey<br />

Soprano<br />

Annabelle Chaffey graduated with High<br />

Dist<strong>in</strong>ction from <strong>the</strong> Sydney<br />

conservatorium of Music <strong>Opera</strong> School <strong>in</strong><br />

1998, w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bud Brown and Barbara<br />

Edgarton Scholarships.<br />

She has performed <strong>the</strong> role of Pam<strong>in</strong>a<br />

with Pacific <strong>Opera</strong> and <strong>the</strong> roles of Helen<br />

and Phaedra <strong>in</strong> Love of <strong>the</strong> Night<strong>in</strong>gale<br />

for Western Australian <strong>Opera</strong>,<br />

Queensland <strong>Opera</strong> and Victorian <strong>Opera</strong>.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Opera</strong> Australia, she has<br />

soloist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messiah, Beethoven N<strong>in</strong>th,<br />

Fauré Requiem, Exultate Jubilate and <strong>in</strong><br />

concerts and recitals for <strong>Opera</strong> Australia,<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> Friends, The <strong>Opera</strong> Foundation,<br />

ABC Classic FM and <strong>the</strong> Beethoven<br />

Society. Most recently, she performed <strong>in</strong><br />

concerts with James Morrison <strong>in</strong> Sydney<br />

and Melbourne and performed <strong>in</strong> <strong>Opera</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arboretum at Pearl Beach. With<br />

Oz <strong>Opera</strong> she revisits <strong>the</strong> role of Violetta<br />

and <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>in</strong> The Mikado and Love of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Night<strong>in</strong>gale.<br />

Elizabeth Campbell<br />

Mezza Soprano<br />

Inverell-born Elizabeth Campbell is one of<br />

Australia’s most dist<strong>in</strong>guished mezzo<br />

sopranos. Her busy career encompasses<br />

opera, concert and recital work. She has<br />

performed lead<strong>in</strong>g roles for all Australian<br />

opera companies, symphony orchestras and<br />

major concert organisations, and her recital<br />

repertoire spans all styles with a major<br />

commitment to Australian compositions.<br />

Elizabeth graduated from <strong>the</strong> Sydney<br />

Conservatorium of Music and fur<strong>the</strong>red her<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> London and Europe after w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The Australian Music Foundation <strong>in</strong> London<br />

award. She won <strong>the</strong> Elly Amel<strong>in</strong>g Lieder Prize<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘s-Hertogenbosch S<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Competion,<br />

represented Australia <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cardiff S<strong>in</strong>ger of<br />

<strong>the</strong> World Competition, performed Messiah<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Royal <strong>Opera</strong> House and toured USA<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Sydney Symphony Orchestra.<br />

Elizabeth has also been <strong>the</strong> recipient of <strong>the</strong><br />

Bayreuth Scholarship, and won a Helpmann<br />

Award and two Green Room Awards.<br />

She has performed major roles <strong>in</strong> operas<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Carmen, Xerxes, La Clemenza<br />

di Tito, Les Troyens, Wer<strong>the</strong>r, Il Trovatore,<br />

Madama Butterfly, Lulu, L’<strong>in</strong>coronazione<br />

di Poppea, Hansel and Gretel, Capriccio,<br />

Summer of <strong>the</strong> Seventeenth Doll, Batavia ,<br />

Dead Man Walk<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> R<strong>in</strong>g Cycle. 2010<br />

saw Elizabeth perform<strong>in</strong>g major roles <strong>in</strong><br />

Rigoletto, Le Nozze di Figaro, La Sonnambula,<br />

Aida and Peter Grimes <strong>in</strong> Sydney, Perth,<br />

Melbourne and Adelaide. Future engagements<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with <strong>the</strong><br />

Australian World Orchestra <strong>in</strong> Sydney, a<br />

recital of Liszt songs for <strong>the</strong> Woodend<br />

Festival, Richard Mills’s Love of <strong>the</strong> Night<strong>in</strong>gale<br />

David Corcoran*<br />

Tenor<br />

Melbourne-born David Corcoran studied<br />

psychology at Deak<strong>in</strong> University before<br />

commenc<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g studies with John<br />

Lander. He <strong>the</strong>n moved to Sydney to<br />

undertake <strong>the</strong> Diploma of <strong>Opera</strong> at <strong>the</strong><br />

Sydney Conservatorium of Music with<br />

Dr Rowena Cowley. David is <strong>the</strong> recipient<br />

of numerous awards <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Foundation Australia’s 2006 Italian <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Award, and <strong>the</strong> prestigious 2007 McDonald’s<br />

Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts Challenge <strong>Opera</strong>tic<br />

Aria Award.<br />

David has been with <strong>Opera</strong> Australia s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

2005, firstly as a member of <strong>the</strong> chorus, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

as a member of <strong>the</strong> Moffatt Oxenbould<br />

Young Artist <strong>Program</strong>. He is now a Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

tenor with <strong>the</strong> company. His roles at OA<br />

have <strong>in</strong>cluded small roles <strong>in</strong> La traviata, Il<br />

tabarro, La bohème, The Pilgrim’s Progress as<br />

well as P<strong>in</strong>kerton <strong>in</strong> Oz<strong>Opera</strong>’s Madama<br />

Butterfly, Z<strong>in</strong>ovy Ismailov <strong>in</strong> Lady Macbeth<br />

of Mtsensk, Bob Boles <strong>in</strong> Peter Grimes, David<br />

<strong>in</strong> Brett Dean’s Bliss <strong>in</strong> Sydney, Melbourne<br />

and at <strong>the</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh Festival, Nick <strong>in</strong> La<br />

David’s concert engagements <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong><br />

“Twilight at Taronga” series, “Classical<br />

Spectacular” for <strong>the</strong> Melbourne Symphony<br />

Orchestra, Haydn’s Creation and Messiah for<br />

Sydney Philharmonia. He is regular guest<br />

artist at <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>Opera</strong> House <strong>in</strong> High<br />

Tea and A taste of <strong>Opera</strong>. David recently<br />

sang England’s National An<strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> 4th<br />

and 5th Ashes Series Cricket Tests and<br />

several One Day International matches.<br />

Virgilio Mar<strong>in</strong>o<br />

Tenor<br />

Australian/Italian tenor Virgilio Mar<strong>in</strong>o<br />

studied at <strong>the</strong> Sydney Conservatorium of<br />

Music. He was a Quarter F<strong>in</strong>alist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New<br />

York Metropolitan <strong>Opera</strong> Award (2000) and<br />

Semi-F<strong>in</strong>alist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Concorso Riccardo<br />

Zandonai, Riva, Italy (2003). Virgilio’s<br />

performances overseas <strong>in</strong>clude Il Duca di<br />

Mantua <strong>in</strong> Rigoletto and <strong>the</strong> title role <strong>in</strong><br />

Oberon at Theater Regensburg, Germany,<br />

Fenton <strong>in</strong> Falstaff and Prunier <strong>in</strong> La Rond<strong>in</strong>e<br />

whilst on scholarship at Mannes College of<br />

Music, New York, and Ross<strong>in</strong>i’s Petite Messe<br />

Baritone<br />

Shaun Brown has a Bachelor of Education<br />

and Graduate Diplomas <strong>in</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> and Vocal<br />

Performance from <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Conservatorium of Music, where he studied<br />

with em<strong>in</strong>ent voice teacher Joseph Ward<br />

O.B.E. A recipient of one of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural<br />

Lord Mayor’s Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts Fellowships,<br />

Shaun travelled to Europe for fur<strong>the</strong>r studies.<br />

He was awarded <strong>the</strong> 1999 Italian <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Award and was w<strong>in</strong>ner of <strong>the</strong> Dame Joan<br />

Su<strong>the</strong>rland Vocal Competition, a f<strong>in</strong>alist <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Metropolitan <strong>Opera</strong> Awards, <strong>the</strong><br />

German <strong>Opera</strong> Award and <strong>the</strong> Herald Sun<br />

Aria. In 2005 on w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> German-<br />

Australian Liederfest, he returned to s<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> concerts <strong>in</strong> Germany.<br />

Shaun has sung numerous roles for<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> Queensland <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Dancairo<br />

and Morales <strong>in</strong> Carmen, Masetto <strong>in</strong> Don<br />

Giovanni, Schaunard <strong>in</strong> La Boheme and<br />

Belcore <strong>in</strong> L’Elisir D’Amore, Riff <strong>in</strong> West<br />

Side Story for <strong>the</strong> Brisbane Riverfestival.<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sweeney Todd, Antonio <strong>in</strong> Le Nozze di<br />

Figaro, Count Paris <strong>in</strong> Romeo et Juliette,<br />

Dr Falke <strong>in</strong> Die Fledermaus. 2008 saw<br />

Shaun appear <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Zealand<br />

International Arts <strong>in</strong> <strong>Opera</strong> de Lyon’s<br />

production of Kurt Weils, The Flight of<br />

L<strong>in</strong>dbergh and Miracle <strong>in</strong> Brisbane for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Brisbane Festival.<br />

2009 saw Shaun take up <strong>the</strong> position<br />

of Vocal Lecturer at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Queensland and Vocal Director for<br />

Sounds Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Australia Summer School.<br />

Shaun cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be <strong>in</strong> demand both as<br />

an adjudicator <strong>in</strong> both choral and vocal<br />

eisteddfods and is a regular concert artist<br />

throughout Australia. In <strong>2011</strong> Shaun will<br />

perform roles <strong>in</strong> Cosi fan tutte and La<br />

Fanciulla del West for <strong>Opera</strong> Queensland.<br />

Technical Credit<br />

Roy Jeffery – Light<strong>in</strong>g Worked for <strong>the</strong> ABC for thirty seven years, for <strong>the</strong> last twenty eight<br />

years, between 1970 – 1998 as a Light<strong>in</strong>g Director. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, he lit at least 100 concerts,<br />

televis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Sydney Symphony Orchestra at <strong>the</strong> Sydney Town Hall and <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>Opera</strong><br />

House. He was light<strong>in</strong>g director for <strong>the</strong> first opera at <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>Opera</strong> House, War and Peace.<br />

He lit at least ten operas from <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>Opera</strong> House, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Daughter of <strong>the</strong> Regiment<br />

and Hansel and Gretel.

David Hibbard Bass<br />

David Hibbard graduated from <strong>the</strong><br />

Queensland Conservatorium of Music <strong>in</strong><br />

1981. A contract with <strong>the</strong> English National<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> saw him as a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal artist <strong>in</strong> Die<br />

Meisters<strong>in</strong>ger, Julius Caesar and Ross<strong>in</strong>i’s<br />

Moses <strong>in</strong> Egypt and Simon Boccanegra for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Glyndebourne Festival <strong>Opera</strong>.<br />

In 1992, he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted First Bass with <strong>the</strong><br />

Bremen Stadts Theater where he performed<br />

Fiesco <strong>in</strong> Simon Boccanegra, Padre Guardiano<br />

<strong>in</strong> La Forza del Dest<strong>in</strong>o, Sparafucile, Baron<br />

Ochs, Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Grem<strong>in</strong>, Coll<strong>in</strong>e and Alvise<br />

Badoero <strong>in</strong> La Gioconda.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce return<strong>in</strong>g to Australia <strong>in</strong> 1994, David<br />

Hibbard has appeared with all <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opera companies and concert organsiations:<br />

Brander (The Damnation of Faust) for<br />

Victorian <strong>Opera</strong>. He returns to <strong>Opera</strong><br />

Queensland <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> for appearances <strong>in</strong> La<br />

Fanciulla del West and Tosca and will s<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

bass solos <strong>in</strong> Messiah for <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Symphony Orchestra.<br />

David Miller AM Pianist<br />

David Miller is widely recognized as one of<br />

Australia’s lead<strong>in</strong>g chamber vocal musicians<br />

and vocal accompanists. The Sydney morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Herald has described him as “<strong>the</strong> role model<br />

of Australian accompanists” and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Queen’s Birthday 1995 Honours list he was<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a member of <strong>the</strong> order of<br />

Australia for his service to music.<br />

His dist<strong>in</strong>guished career has <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

partnerships with many <strong>in</strong>ternationally<br />

renowned s<strong>in</strong>gers and <strong>in</strong>strumentalists.<br />

He has also been <strong>in</strong>volved with a number<br />

of chamber ensembles <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g The<br />

Hunt<strong>in</strong>gton Trio, <strong>the</strong> contemporary music<br />

ensemble Flederman, The Song Company,<br />

The Australia Ensemble, Ensemble 24 and<br />

The Canberra W<strong>in</strong>d Soloists and is a<br />

found<strong>in</strong>g member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative, highly<br />

acclaimed Grevillea Ensemble.<br />

His perform<strong>in</strong>g schedule has taken him to<br />

<strong>the</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom, New Zealand,<br />

Indonesia, Japan, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Saudia Arabia, New<br />

Caledonia, Korea, Vanuatu and Vietnam, as<br />

well as through most parts of Australia. He<br />

works regularly for <strong>the</strong> ABC and Musica Viva<br />

and records for Wals<strong>in</strong>gham Classics, Tall<br />

Poppies, Vox Australis, 2 MBS - FM and ABC<br />

Classics. David is head of Ensemble Studies<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Sydney Conservatorium of Music.<br />

He has performed <strong>in</strong> all ten performances<br />

of <strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paddock</strong>.<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> Hansford – Audio Eng<strong>in</strong>eer Mart<strong>in</strong> has been work<strong>in</strong>g for over 20 years for a wide<br />

range of music and events from small venues, large concert halls to outdoor shows. He has had<br />

a strong foundation of experience and polish<strong>in</strong>g of his skills while work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Sydney <strong>Opera</strong><br />

House where he was based for almost 10 years work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Australian <strong>Opera</strong> and Ballet<br />

Company, Sydney Theatre Company and Sydney Dance Company. He has worked mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

orchestras for tour<strong>in</strong>g musical productions for <strong>the</strong> Gordon Frost Company around Australia<br />

and tour<strong>in</strong>g productions to Hong Kong <strong>in</strong> addition to events such as Womadalaide World Music<br />

Festival, Port Fairy and Woodford Folk Festivals. For a number of years, Mart<strong>in</strong> has chosen to<br />

base himself <strong>in</strong> rural Australia away from <strong>the</strong> traditional enterta<strong>in</strong>ment hubs (but close to <strong>the</strong><br />

famous B<strong>in</strong>gara Roxy <strong>the</strong>atre) from where he runs <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess “Wombat Tracks” which<br />

specializes <strong>in</strong> quality live audio production and record<strong>in</strong>g and provides appropriate quality<br />

audio for good music of all k<strong>in</strong>ds.<br />

Timothy Sexton Conductor<br />

As a freelance composer, conductor, arranger,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ger, writer, adjudicator and broadcaster,<br />

Timothy Sexton is one of <strong>the</strong> most<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ent musicians <strong>in</strong> South Australia.<br />

Timothy has composed more than<br />

200 works, rang<strong>in</strong>g from opera through<br />

children’s <strong>the</strong>atre to choral works,and has<br />

worked with most of SA’s lead<strong>in</strong>g performig<br />

arts companies. He has sung <strong>in</strong> more than<br />

30 productions for <strong>the</strong> State <strong>Opera</strong> of South<br />

Australia and conduct<strong>in</strong>g credits for that<br />

company<strong>in</strong>clude Don Pasquale, The Mikado,<br />

Riders to <strong>the</strong> Sea, Mavra, Treemonisha,<br />

Mahagonny Songspiel, The Turn of <strong>the</strong> Screw,<br />

Philip Glass’s Akhnaten and E<strong>in</strong>ste<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

beach, SweeneyTodd, Elena Kats-Chern<strong>in</strong>’s<br />

Undertow (with which he toured Hungary<br />

and F<strong>in</strong>land <strong>in</strong> August2005), The Station,<br />

Bastien and Bastienne, La Voix Huma<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

<strong>the</strong> critically acclaimedproduction of Glass’s<br />

Satyagraha <strong>in</strong> February of this year with <strong>the</strong><br />

Adelaide Vocal Project andLeigh Warren and<br />

Dancers. He was Associate Chorus Master<br />

for Wagner’s Gotterdammerung for <strong>the</strong><br />

2003 Perth Festival and Chorus Master and<br />

a Rehearsal Conductor for <strong>the</strong> 2004 R<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Cycle staged <strong>in</strong> Adelaide. Orchestral<br />

conduct<strong>in</strong>g credits <strong>in</strong>clude performances<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Adelaide Symphony Orchestra,<br />

The Queensland Orchestra and <strong>the</strong><br />

Auckland Philharmonia.<br />

In late 2001Timothy founded <strong>the</strong> Adelaide<br />

Art Orchestra and with <strong>the</strong>m has performed<br />

with such Australian music lum<strong>in</strong>aries as<br />

Glenn Shorrock, Anthony Warlow, Judi<br />

Connelli, David Hobson, Rob Guest,Mar<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Prior and Julie Anthony. He is a two-time<br />

recipient of <strong>the</strong> Henry Krips Memorial<br />

Conduct<strong>in</strong>g Scholarship and <strong>in</strong> 2003 was<br />

awarded a Centenary Medal for Services<br />

to Music. Most recently Timothy has been<br />

named 2009 South Australian of <strong>the</strong> Year<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts.

THE MIMosa orchestra<br />

Theo Lasaroff (1st viol<strong>in</strong> & leader) was born<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland, but lived from an early age <strong>in</strong><br />

London, where his fa<strong>the</strong>r, a professional viol<strong>in</strong>ist gave<br />

him his first lessons. In his early teens he ga<strong>in</strong>ed a<br />

scholarship to study with well know Czech émigré,<br />

Jan Sedivka, commenc<strong>in</strong>g a friendship that was to<br />

last a lifetime.<br />

As well as a perform<strong>in</strong>g as a soloist and freelance<br />

orchestral musician, he became leader of <strong>the</strong> highly<br />

regarded Sedivka Chamber Orchestra. At n<strong>in</strong>eteen,<br />

he was accepted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Bournemouth Symphony<br />

Orchestra, a position he held for twelve years, before<br />

ventur<strong>in</strong>g with his viol<strong>in</strong>ist wife on a “two or three<br />

year” adventure to Australia, where he was<br />

immediately accepted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony<br />

Orchestra. In 1976 Theo became <strong>the</strong> highly respected<br />

Concertmaster of <strong>the</strong> QSO, a position he held until his<br />

retirement from fulltime play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid n<strong>in</strong>eties.<br />

He has cont<strong>in</strong>ued his love of chamber music, lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Queensland Str<strong>in</strong>g Quartet, form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Lasaroff<br />

Quartet and as well as be<strong>in</strong>g appo<strong>in</strong>ted leader of <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Queensland S<strong>in</strong>fonietta.<br />

David Mat<strong>the</strong>ws (1st viol<strong>in</strong>) The Medici Str<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Quartet was formed at London’s Royal Academy of<br />

Music and David was a founder member of this<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally acclaimed ensemble, with whom he<br />

played 2nd viol<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> next twenty years. The<br />

quartet performed <strong>in</strong> over thirty countries. As well as<br />

countless radio broadcasts, <strong>the</strong>y also appeared on TV<br />

and film and <strong>the</strong>ir numerous record<strong>in</strong>gs for EMI and<br />

Nimbus culm<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir highly acclaimed<br />

Beethoven cycle for Nimbus.<br />

After emigrat<strong>in</strong>g to Australia he played for <strong>the</strong> West<br />

Australian Symphony Orchestra before tak<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong><br />

position of Lecturer <strong>in</strong> Viol<strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Queensland. There followed three years of freelance<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Auckland <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Auckland S<strong>in</strong>fonietta, before return<strong>in</strong>g to Australia as<br />

Concertmaster of <strong>the</strong> Darw<strong>in</strong> Symphony Orchestra<br />

and viol<strong>in</strong> tutor at <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Territory University.<br />

He was later Head of Str<strong>in</strong>gs at Orange Regional<br />

Conservatorium and Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal 1st Viol<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. With his wife,<br />

Sarah, David shares <strong>the</strong> position of coord<strong>in</strong>ator<br />

of NECOM Inverell and also teaches str<strong>in</strong>gs for<br />

NECOM <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New England.<br />

Tiffany Shih (1st viol<strong>in</strong>) began her musical<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at five, learn<strong>in</strong>g piano and viol<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g year. She has attended <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Conservatorium, Griffith University <strong>in</strong> Australia where<br />

she completed a Bachelor of Music <strong>in</strong> Performance<br />

with Honours <strong>in</strong> December 2008. She has performed<br />

regularly as a member of <strong>the</strong> Australian Youth<br />

Symphony and toured to Europe <strong>in</strong> 2008 with <strong>the</strong><br />

Queensland Youth Symphony. In 2009 she received<br />

a Graduate Assistantship to study with Dr. Gregory<br />

Lee at <strong>the</strong> Oklahoma University <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />

As a Graduate Assistant, she was a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

Graduate Str<strong>in</strong>g Quartet. While <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States,<br />

she participated <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> Kill<strong>in</strong>gton Music Festival<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Aspen Music Festival participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

masterclasses with faculties of Boston Conservatory,<br />

Julliard, Mannes School of Music and <strong>the</strong> Cleveland<br />

Institute of Music.<br />

Joan Farrow-Lasaroff (2nd viol<strong>in</strong>) was born<br />

<strong>in</strong> Lancashire, spend<strong>in</strong>g her early years s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

danc<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> accompaniment of her pianist mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

later commenc<strong>in</strong>g viol<strong>in</strong> classes at high school. She<br />

was awarded a scholarship to study at <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

School of Music Manchester under Reg<strong>in</strong>ald Stead,<br />

leader of <strong>the</strong> BBC Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Orchestra (now BBC<br />

Philharmonic) and later with Leonard Hirsch. She<br />

played <strong>in</strong> various youth orchestras, <strong>the</strong> last one be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> National Youth Orchestra of Gt.Brita<strong>in</strong>, where she<br />

played great music with great conductors as well as<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> excit<strong>in</strong>g places. She ga<strong>in</strong>ed enormous<br />

experience work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Annes on Sea Pier<br />

Orchestra (N.W. England) for two summer seasons,<br />

each last<strong>in</strong>g for five months - two concerts daily,<br />

except for Sundays when <strong>the</strong>re were three.<br />

In 1954 she became a member of <strong>the</strong> Bournemouth<br />

Symphony - leav<strong>in</strong>g with husband Theo eight years<br />

later to arrive <strong>in</strong> Brisbane just three months before<br />

Alison, <strong>the</strong> first of <strong>the</strong>ir three viol<strong>in</strong>ist-to-be daughters<br />

was born. Joan jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony<br />

where she was to spend thirty happy years.<br />

Julie Fawcett (2nd viol<strong>in</strong>) began learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> viol<strong>in</strong><br />

at <strong>the</strong> age of eight <strong>in</strong> South Australia with Anita<br />

Larsen. She studied at <strong>the</strong> Canberra School of Music<br />

with Charma<strong>in</strong> Gadd, where she completed her<br />

B.Mus performance. Julie has played as an orchestral<br />

viol<strong>in</strong>ist with <strong>the</strong> Australian Youth Orchestra, <strong>the</strong><br />

Tasmanian Symphony, <strong>the</strong> Australian Chamber<br />

Orchestra and <strong>the</strong> Australian <strong>Opera</strong> and Ballet<br />

Orchestras. In 2000 she married a farmer and made<br />

<strong>the</strong> big move to Narrabri, where toge<strong>the</strong>r with her<br />

husband and two children, she has become a valued<br />

member of <strong>the</strong> community as director of an adult<br />

choir & teacher of viol<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Sofia Debus (viola) completed her tertiary<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> Switzerland and England, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a<br />

Bachelor of Music with Dist<strong>in</strong>ction from <strong>the</strong> Lucerne<br />

Conservatorium and an Advanced Certificate <strong>in</strong><br />

Music Performance and Communication Skills from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.<br />

In 1996 she performed with <strong>the</strong> Welsh National<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> Orchestra <strong>in</strong> Cardiff, Wales.<br />

Return<strong>in</strong>g to Australia, Sofia completed a Bachelor<br />

of Education from Fl<strong>in</strong>ders University and was a<br />

classroom teacher for five years <strong>in</strong> Darw<strong>in</strong>. Sofia has<br />

taught viol<strong>in</strong> and viola at Tamworth Conservatorium,<br />

established <strong>the</strong> Gypsy Jazz Ensemble, re-established<br />

<strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>fonia Community Orchestra, and was<br />

Conductor for <strong>the</strong> Tamworth Youth Str<strong>in</strong>g Orchestra.<br />

Sofia recently ga<strong>in</strong>ed Suzuki Teacher Certification<br />

for both viol<strong>in</strong> and cello through <strong>the</strong> Suzuki Talent<br />

Education Association (NSW) Inc. She performs<br />

regularly for <strong>Opera</strong> North West, with <strong>the</strong> Vivace<br />

Str<strong>in</strong>g Trio and at <strong>the</strong> New England Bach Festival.<br />

Eleanor Streatfeild (cello) graduated from <strong>the</strong><br />

Newcastle Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor<br />

of Music. She has performed <strong>in</strong> many orchestras and<br />

ensembles, also tutor<strong>in</strong>g cello privately. She has held<br />

<strong>the</strong> position of Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Cellist with numerous<br />

orchestras <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Melbourne Youth Orchestra,<br />

Melbourne <strong>Opera</strong>, Hunter Str<strong>in</strong>gs and Symphonia,<br />

also perform<strong>in</strong>g for six years with <strong>the</strong> Intermezzo<br />

Str<strong>in</strong>gs Quartet. She was Cont<strong>in</strong>uo cellist with Ros<br />

Halton for Hunter <strong>Opera</strong>’s adaptation of Mozart’s<br />

Don Giovanni. Eleanor has participated <strong>in</strong> several<br />

Australian Youth Orchestra camps and tours, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> AYO tour of Europe <strong>in</strong> 2010. S<strong>in</strong>ce 2008 Eleanor<br />

has been as staff member of NECOM. In 2009<br />

completed a highly successful regional concert tour<br />

with Russian pianist Konstant<strong>in</strong> Shamray. Eleanor<br />

also holds a Graduate Diploma <strong>in</strong> Applied L<strong>in</strong>guistics.<br />

Sarah Mat<strong>the</strong>ws (cello) was awarded BA<br />

Honours <strong>in</strong> Music Education from K<strong>in</strong>gston University<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1987 where she studied cello with Anthony Lewis<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Medici Str<strong>in</strong>g Quartet. She cont<strong>in</strong>ued her cello<br />

studies with cellist Derek Simpson of <strong>the</strong> Aeolian<br />

Str<strong>in</strong>g Quartet and Leonard Stehn at <strong>the</strong> London<br />

Guildhall School of Music, after achiev<strong>in</strong>g Diploma<br />

<strong>in</strong> Orchestral Studies from <strong>the</strong> University of London’s<br />

Goldsmiths College.<br />

She emigrated to Australia <strong>in</strong> 1992 and played<br />

with <strong>the</strong> West Australian Symphony and Queensland<br />

Symphony Orchestra s. She was Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Cellist of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Darw<strong>in</strong> Symphony Orchestra as well as cellist<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Orion Piano Trio. Sarah was later a member<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra <strong>in</strong> New<br />

Zealand and <strong>the</strong> Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.<br />

With her husband David, Sarah shares <strong>the</strong> position<br />

of coord<strong>in</strong>ator of NECOM Inverell, also teach<strong>in</strong>g cello<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New England region.<br />

Ken Poggoli (double bass) is a full time bass<br />

player with <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony Orchestra.<br />

His early years were spent on <strong>the</strong> family farm near<br />

Tolga on <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>rton Tablelands and at board<strong>in</strong>g<br />

school <strong>in</strong> Charters Towers. Ken came to Brisbane<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1972 to study Architecture but after four years<br />

decided to pursue music. Freelanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Brisbane<br />

and a year <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ABC National Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Orchestra<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sydney was followed by study <strong>in</strong> London with<br />

Adrian Beers of <strong>the</strong> English Chamber Orchestra.<br />

Ken graduated from <strong>the</strong> Queensland Conservatorium<br />

of Music <strong>in</strong> 1984 .He <strong>the</strong>n spent a year <strong>in</strong> France<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g with renowned Syrian/ French virtuoso<br />

Francois Rabbath.<br />

Ken has played and recorded with various chamber<br />

groups and performed with The Orquesta S<strong>in</strong>fónica<br />

de Tenerife <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. He taught bass at <strong>the</strong> QCM<br />

from 1987 to 1999 and is a regular teacher<br />

and performer at <strong>the</strong> National Bass Workshops<br />

<strong>in</strong> Adelaide, <strong>the</strong> Hawaii Contrebass Festival and<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton DC Bass workshop at Georgetown<br />

University USA.Ken’s hobby is collect<strong>in</strong>g v<strong>in</strong>tage Italian<br />

English German and French bass <strong>in</strong>struments from<br />

as far back as <strong>the</strong> 18th Century.<br />

Nicholas Negerevich (flute) is a graduate<br />

of <strong>the</strong> NSW Conservatorium of Music. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his graduation <strong>in</strong> 1972 he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Lecturer<br />

<strong>in</strong> Flute, a position he held until 1987. In 1975 he<br />

was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Piccolo and Flute with <strong>the</strong><br />

Elizabeth Theatre Trust Orchestra (now <strong>the</strong> Australian<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> and Ballet Orchestra). His work <strong>in</strong> Sydney<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded jo<strong>in</strong>t founder (with Karen North) of <strong>the</strong><br />

Sydney S<strong>in</strong>fonia, jo<strong>in</strong>t founder of <strong>the</strong> Bennelong Trio,<br />

numerous concerts and ensemble work with many<br />

orchestras <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Sydney Symphony.<br />

In 1988, Nick moved to Brisbane, where he<br />

performed, composed, conducted and taught<br />

at several major schools Nick now resides <strong>in</strong><br />

Armidale and is a member of <strong>the</strong> NECOM<br />

staff. He exam<strong>in</strong>es for <strong>the</strong> AMEB and is an<br />

eisteddfod adjudicator.<br />

Wendy Champion (flute) was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner of <strong>the</strong> David Cubb<strong>in</strong> Memorial Scholarship<br />

for a talented flautist to cover fees to complete<br />

a four year Bachelor of music at <strong>the</strong> Australian<br />

Institute of Music. She studied with Dr Danielle<br />

Eden, Leonie Khoury and Lorna Night<strong>in</strong>gale.<br />

Wendy has performed with <strong>the</strong> Penrith Symphony<br />

and Sydney Youth Orchestras. She has a wide solo<br />

repertoire and cont<strong>in</strong>ues to perform, s<strong>in</strong>ce mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to Inverell to set up a teach<strong>in</strong>g studio. Wendy is<br />

now a fulltime staff member of NECOM, teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

woodw<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Inverell and Warialda.


Li L<strong>in</strong>g (oboe) was born <strong>in</strong> Taiwan and at 15,<br />

moved to Australia to study oboe at <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Conservatorium, transferr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Sydney<br />

Conservatorium of Music where she obta<strong>in</strong>ed her<br />

Bachelor of Music <strong>in</strong> Performance. She received <strong>the</strong><br />

Griffith Award and was granted membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Golden Key National Honour Society <strong>in</strong> recognition<br />

of outstand<strong>in</strong>g achievement and also achiev<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

Master of Orchestral Music with dist<strong>in</strong>ction from <strong>the</strong><br />

Johannes Gutenberg University.<br />

Li L<strong>in</strong>g has toured <strong>in</strong>ternationally and recorded with<br />

many orchestras <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Kammerphilharmonie<br />

Rhe<strong>in</strong>-Ma<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> International Youth Orchestra<br />

Academy <strong>in</strong> Germany and <strong>the</strong> Australian Youth<br />

Orchestra. Li L<strong>in</strong>g was a member of <strong>the</strong> Sydney<br />

S<strong>in</strong>fonia and qualified as a casual oboe player of <strong>the</strong><br />

Australian <strong>Opera</strong> and Ballet Orchestra. She has<br />

taught oboe and bassoon at <strong>the</strong> Tamworth Regional<br />

Conservatorium of Music. Li l<strong>in</strong>g has just returned<br />

from a year teach<strong>in</strong>g oboe and piano at <strong>the</strong> FGS<br />

Ju<strong>in</strong>-e Buddhist School <strong>in</strong> Taiwan. She performs<br />

regularly as an oboe recitalist and is also a proficient<br />

piano accompanist.<br />

David Mart<strong>in</strong> (clar<strong>in</strong>et) was born at Ipswich,<br />

Queensland. Though <strong>in</strong>itially tra<strong>in</strong>ed as a clar<strong>in</strong>ettist,<br />

David transferred his <strong>in</strong>terest to bassoon. He studied<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sydney with SSO pr<strong>in</strong>cipal bassoon John Cran,<br />

auditioned, and was accepted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new ABC Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Orchestra. In 1967 he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted as second<br />

bassoon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony Orchestra.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period he was also a member of <strong>the</strong> Aulos<br />

W<strong>in</strong>d Qu<strong>in</strong>tet.Apart from perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> symphony<br />

orchestra repertoire, <strong>the</strong> Orchestra played for <strong>the</strong><br />

Queensland Lyric <strong>Opera</strong> and Queensland Ballet.<br />

On retir<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> QSO <strong>in</strong> 2001, after 33years of<br />

service David returned to his first love, <strong>the</strong> clar<strong>in</strong>et,<br />

which he has played for “<strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paddock</strong>”.<br />

Peter Musson (bassoon) was born <strong>in</strong> Auckland,<br />

New Zealand and at <strong>the</strong> age of sixteen jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

N.Z.B.C Symphony Orchestra, becom<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

Bassoonist and a member of <strong>the</strong> New Zealand W<strong>in</strong>d<br />

Qu<strong>in</strong>tet. Subsequently he worked as a free lance<br />

player <strong>in</strong> London. Over <strong>the</strong> years Peter has held<br />

Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal positions with several orchestras <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ulster Orchestra, <strong>the</strong> Durban Symphony<br />

Orchestra, <strong>the</strong> Niederrhe<strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>foniker and <strong>the</strong><br />

Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He has also<br />

appeared as Guest Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal with <strong>the</strong> Royal<br />

Philharmonic Orchestra, <strong>the</strong> Gurzenich Orchestra<br />

of Cologne, <strong>the</strong> Australian Chamber Orchestra<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Sydney Symphony Orchestra.<br />

After many years with <strong>the</strong> Queensland Symphony<br />

Orchestra, he jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> staff of <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Conservatorium, where he was Senior Lecturer <strong>in</strong><br />

Bassoon until 2002. As a very successful teacher,<br />

Peter has numerous former students <strong>in</strong> professional<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g positions worldwide.<br />

In addition to perform<strong>in</strong>g widely as a soloist and<br />

as a member of chamber music ensembles, Peter<br />

is well known as a commercial reed maker.<br />

Arm<strong>in</strong> Terzer (french horn) studied horn <strong>in</strong> Italy<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Royal College of Music <strong>in</strong> London, after which<br />

he was offered pr<strong>in</strong>cipal positions <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s<br />

Guangzhou, Lanzhou and Beij<strong>in</strong>g Symphony<br />

Orchestras. While <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a he also performed with <strong>the</strong><br />

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, toured Europe<br />

and Africa with GSO and recorded for EMI with BSO.<br />

On mov<strong>in</strong>g to Brisbane to pursue a Master of Music<br />

Studies degree at <strong>the</strong> Queensland Conservatorium,<br />

Arm<strong>in</strong> has s<strong>in</strong>ce played as guest pr<strong>in</strong>cipal with <strong>the</strong><br />

Pops Orchestra, has held <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal horn position <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Gold Coast Symphony Orchestra and is a regular<br />

guest with <strong>the</strong> Queensland Orchestra. He has steadily<br />

been work<strong>in</strong>g on arrangements for various sizes of<br />

horn ensembles, an <strong>in</strong>terest that has led to an<br />

offer from <strong>the</strong> Conservatorium to undertake a Doctor<br />

of Musical Arts <strong>in</strong> this field <strong>in</strong> 2008. Besides his<br />

horn-related activities Arm<strong>in</strong> is an honour graduate<br />

zof <strong>the</strong> Audio Institute of America <strong>in</strong> record<strong>in</strong>g<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and music production, and is also study<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for a Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Economics degree at <strong>the</strong><br />

London School of Economics.<br />

Lisa Malyusc (french horn) Lisa’s first musical<br />

encounters at age eight with tenor horn were<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> wonderful brass band play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tradition <strong>in</strong> England. After emigrat<strong>in</strong>g to Adelaide<br />

she took up French horn and was accepted <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> special music program at Brighton High School.<br />

After complet<strong>in</strong>g a Diploma of performance with<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction at <strong>the</strong> Sydney conservatorium, Lisa travelled<br />

to Europe. She received a Bachelor of Music at <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Arts <strong>in</strong> Graz and after be<strong>in</strong>g awarded<br />

an Erasmus scholarship, specialised <strong>in</strong> natural horn<br />

and early music at <strong>the</strong> Royal Conservatory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Hague, Holland. Bas<strong>in</strong>g herself for several years <strong>in</strong><br />

Vienna, she headed <strong>the</strong> brass department at W<strong>in</strong>den<br />

- am – see Music School and freelanced with various<br />

major European Orchestras. In 2008 she was<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted tutti horn with <strong>the</strong> Thessaloniki State<br />

Orchestra. With her husband, Gergely, she has<br />

recently returned to much missed Australia to take<br />

up <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t position of brass tutor at <strong>the</strong> NECOM.<br />

L<strong>in</strong>don Weise (trumpet) is an active freelance<br />

performer and teacher, hold<strong>in</strong>g a B.Mus (Hons)<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Queensland Conservatorium of Music<br />

and University of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Queensland. He performs<br />

regularly with <strong>the</strong> Queensland Orchestra, Queensland<br />

Pops Orchestra and <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>fonia of St Andrew’s.<br />

L<strong>in</strong>don is actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> community music-mak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g with Australia’s premiere brass band<br />

Brisbane Excelsior, <strong>the</strong> Brisbane Symphony and<br />

Philharmonic Orchestras, and pit orchestras for shows,<br />

most memorably West Side Story, Les Miserables,<br />

Jesus Christ Superstar and <strong>the</strong> Pirates of Penzance..<br />

As a conductor, L<strong>in</strong>don has directed <strong>the</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dsor Brass<br />

and South Brisbane Federal Band, lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Ignatian’s Musical Society <strong>in</strong> a season of West Side<br />

Story. L<strong>in</strong>don has held various teach<strong>in</strong>g positions,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g posts at USQ (Toowoomba) and private<br />

schools <strong>in</strong> and around Brisbane, and has often tutored<br />

cornet at <strong>the</strong> Queensland State Youth Band’s annual<br />

camp. International experience <strong>in</strong>cludes tours to<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gapore and Malaysia, Hong Kong, England, New<br />

Zealand, and throughout Australia.<br />

David Brown (trombone) began play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

trombone as a student of Warragul Technical School,<br />

later w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g many major band competitions. Whilst<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Victorian College of <strong>the</strong> Arts, he also<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Globe <strong>Opera</strong> Company, Melbourne<br />

Philharmonic Orchestra, <strong>the</strong> Roger Clark Band and<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2nd /15th Field Regiment. David later became<br />

an <strong>in</strong>strumental music teacher with <strong>the</strong> Victorian<br />

Education Department and was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Head<br />

of Brass and Percussion. He was Music Director<br />

of Senior Concert and Stage Bands at Ba<strong>in</strong>bridge<br />

College, Hamilton. For 12years, he also held <strong>the</strong><br />

position of Musical Director of <strong>the</strong> Hamilton City<br />

Band. On mov<strong>in</strong>g to Armidale <strong>in</strong> 2000, he now<br />

teaches at several schools <strong>in</strong> Armidale and Warialda.<br />

David is a casual member of <strong>the</strong> UNE staff and<br />

Music Director of <strong>the</strong> Armidale City Band.<br />

Wang Yu Yan (percussion) studied at <strong>the</strong><br />

Shanghai Conservatory of Music and was <strong>the</strong><br />

youngest artist to be offered <strong>the</strong> position of pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

timpani <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shanghai Youth Orchestra. Upon<br />

graduat<strong>in</strong>g with first class honours, Wang Yan jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, tour<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia. Wang Yan<br />

briefly held <strong>the</strong> position of pr<strong>in</strong>cipal timpani and<br />

percussion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra<br />

before com<strong>in</strong>g to Australia to undertake a Master<br />

of Music Studies degree at <strong>the</strong> Queensland<br />

Conservatorium Griffith University. In 2008 she was<br />

offered a place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative Doctor of Musical<br />

Arts degree at <strong>the</strong> Conservatorium. Wang Yan holds<br />

<strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal timpani and percussion position with <strong>the</strong><br />

Gold Coast Symphony Orchestra, and works regularly<br />

with The Queensland Orchestra as guest pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

timpani and percussionist.<br />

Daniel Bale (percussion) completed his HSC<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2010. He plays percussion with <strong>the</strong> Armidale<br />

City Band, Armidale Youth Orchestra and Symphony<br />

Orchestra. Daniel has also played <strong>in</strong> numerous<br />

musicals <strong>in</strong> Armidale.<br />

Ben Lange (yidaki) was born <strong>in</strong> Melbourne and<br />

grew up <strong>in</strong> Cairns. Ben’s aborig<strong>in</strong>al name is Milliwurra<br />

Niarrungi of <strong>the</strong> Marra people, south of <strong>the</strong> Roper<br />

River mouth, on <strong>the</strong> east coast of <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Territory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gulf of Carpentaria. He picked up<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> yidaki (or didgeridoo) <strong>in</strong> his teenage years.<br />

After attend<strong>in</strong>g high school <strong>in</strong> Cairns, he <strong>the</strong>n<br />

attended University of New South Wales under<br />

an <strong>in</strong>dustry co-operative scholarship and followed by<br />

a cadetship with <strong>the</strong> NSW Department of Energy <strong>in</strong><br />

Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2004. Overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly, Ben<br />

was <strong>the</strong> first Indigenous Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>in</strong><br />

Australia and <strong>the</strong> first <strong>in</strong>digeneous Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

student to graduate from UNSW. While at UNSW<br />

he participated <strong>in</strong> Research and analys<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

acoustical properties of <strong>the</strong> Yidaki <strong>in</strong> UNSW’s Acoustic<br />

Laboratory. Ben is currently work<strong>in</strong>g as a project<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer for Energex Australia. He is committed to<br />

act as a mentor to young <strong>in</strong>digenous students who<br />

are currently consider<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g as a profession<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

<strong>Opera</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paddock</strong> celebrates its tenth year of<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g you wonderful music. Tonight’s programme<br />

offers a tribute to <strong>the</strong> unique artistry of Dame Joan<br />

Su<strong>the</strong>rland and a revival of some of <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />

works from our first decade.<br />

Dame Joan Su<strong>the</strong>rland will be long remembered as a<br />

great exponent of bel canto style. Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />

Italian songs of Monteverdi and culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

works of Bell<strong>in</strong>i, Ross<strong>in</strong>i, Donizetti and Verdi, bel canto<br />

style is characterised by virtuoso coloratura¸ simplicity,<br />

elegance and rich dynamics. To that add grace, agility,<br />

endurance and passion and you have <strong>the</strong> contemporary<br />

expectation of bel canto and <strong>the</strong> art of Dame Joan<br />

Su<strong>the</strong>rland. Tonight’s tribute, performed by all <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong>gers, skims <strong>the</strong> vast repertoire of Dame Joan’s forty<br />

year legendary career.<br />

Dame Joan Su<strong>the</strong>rland (1926-2010)<br />

La Fille du Régiment (The Daughter of <strong>the</strong><br />

Regiment) Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848)<br />

Donizetti was an <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognised Italian<br />

composer at 35, hav<strong>in</strong>g completed 40 of his 65 operas,<br />

competently embrac<strong>in</strong>g vary<strong>in</strong>g styles and subjects.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tense family tragedy Donizetti moved to<br />

Paris <strong>in</strong> 1838 hop<strong>in</strong>g for more creative freedom. Paris<br />

saw <strong>the</strong> birth of his French opera, La Fille du Régiment<br />

which premiered to enormous success at <strong>the</strong><br />

Opéra-Comique <strong>in</strong> 1840.<br />

Marie, found as an <strong>in</strong>fant and adopted by <strong>the</strong> 21st<br />

Regiment of <strong>the</strong> French army, is bound to marry from<br />

<strong>the</strong> regiment. Alas, Tony, a handsome Tyrolean, <strong>the</strong><br />

object of her passion, is not a soldier. The solution is<br />

simple. Marie joyfully s<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong> rous<strong>in</strong>g regimental song<br />

Chacun le sait to celebrate Tony’s decision to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

regiment. Previously, Tonio had saved Marie from a fatal<br />

cliff fall. So when Tonio is caught as a spy <strong>the</strong>y<br />

acknowledge <strong>the</strong>ir mutual attraction (Quoi! Vous<br />

m’aimez). Meanwhile, an aged aristocrat, <strong>the</strong> Marquise<br />

de Birkenfeld claims Marie as her niece; horrified at<br />

Marie’s upbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, she determ<strong>in</strong>es to remove her to a<br />

more fitt<strong>in</strong>g environment. Tonio arrives expect<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

claim Marie as his bride (Ah! Mes amis, quel jour de<br />

fête!). Marie quickly becomes bored by her <strong>in</strong>dulgent<br />

life at <strong>the</strong> Marquise’s castle. At <strong>the</strong> unexpected arrival<br />

of <strong>the</strong> 21st Regiment, <strong>the</strong> gentile life of <strong>the</strong> castle turns<br />

to chaos result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> revelation that Marie is<br />

actually <strong>the</strong> daughter of <strong>the</strong> Marquise. Marie and Tonio<br />

joyfully jo<strong>in</strong> Sergeant Surplice <strong>in</strong> Tous les trios réunis.<br />

La Favorita Donizetti<br />

La Favorita premiered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year as La Fille du<br />

Régiment, both operas h<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> restrictions of<br />

social cast; La Fille parody<strong>in</strong>g landed aristocracy and<br />

La Favorita expos<strong>in</strong>g society’s expectation of female<br />

virg<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> courtly <strong>in</strong>trigues.<br />

Fernando, a young novitiate, has renounced his<br />

religious call<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> love of a woman (Léonora)<br />

whose name and history are unknown to him. She is<br />

<strong>the</strong> mistress of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g, Alphonse X1 of Castile. When<br />

Fernando returns from a glorious defeat of <strong>the</strong> Moors<br />

(1340), <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g offers to grant him any request.<br />

Predictably, he requests Léonora’s hand <strong>in</strong> marriage.<br />

Recognis<strong>in</strong>g Fernando’s uncompromis<strong>in</strong>g position<br />

and feel<strong>in</strong>g unworthy of him she sadly s<strong>in</strong>gs Oh,<br />

mio Fernando.<br />

La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker)<br />

V<strong>in</strong>cenzo Bell<strong>in</strong>i (1801-1835)<br />

Bell<strong>in</strong>i’s position <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> musical life of Paris was said<br />

to be ‘second only to Ross<strong>in</strong>i’; he was much admired<br />

by Chop<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Rodolfo, <strong>the</strong> miss<strong>in</strong>g feudal lord of an idyllic Swiss<br />

village, has returned to his childhood home<br />

unannounced. Relax<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> village <strong>in</strong>n, he rem<strong>in</strong>isces<br />

on his youth (Vi ravviso).<br />

Rigoletto Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)<br />

Victor Hugo’s macabre play Le roi s’amuse was <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spiration for Verdi’s opera. Despite <strong>in</strong>itial censorship<br />

difficulties, Rigoletto premiered <strong>in</strong> 1851 <strong>in</strong> Venice to<br />

great acclaim.<br />

The opera opens as <strong>the</strong> libert<strong>in</strong>e Duke boasts of his<br />

easy conquests and hedonistic philosophy (Questa o<br />

quella). The object of his next conquest is Gilda, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>nocent daughter of his deformed court jester,<br />

Rigoletto. Disguised as a poor student <strong>the</strong> Duke has<br />

secretly entered Gilda’s house and passionately wooed<br />

her (Signore pr<strong>in</strong>cipe). When he leaves Gilda blissfully<br />

daydreams (Caro nome). Sadly her euphoria does not<br />

last long. The Duke’s courtiers, unknown to him, kidnap<br />

Gilda, assum<strong>in</strong>g her to be Rigoletto’s mistress and take<br />

her to his palace.<br />

Norma Bell<strong>in</strong>i<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> great tragic operatic hero<strong>in</strong>es is Norma,<br />

a Druid high priestess who breaks her vows. Norma’s<br />

responsibility is to signal <strong>the</strong> Gaulish warriors and<br />

priests to attack <strong>the</strong> Romans who have occupied Gaul<br />

(c.50BC). Norma secretly loves <strong>the</strong> Roman proconsul,<br />

Palione but alas his attentions have switched to Adalgisa,<br />

an acolyte <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple. In <strong>the</strong> poignant duet Mira, o<br />

Norma, Norma confirms that she must rel<strong>in</strong>quish her<br />

children and sacrifice herself to atone for her treason;<br />

attempt<strong>in</strong>g to prevent this, Adalgisa vows to love Palione<br />

no more and return him to Norma.<br />

Don Pasquale Donizetti<br />

Most of Donizetti’s later operas had elements of<br />

tragedy; Don Pasquale is one exception. This opera buffa<br />

premiered <strong>in</strong> 1843 at <strong>the</strong> Théàtre-Italien, Paris. In a plot<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>iscent of <strong>the</strong> commedia dell’arte, <strong>the</strong> pompous<br />

old Don Pasquale is tricked <strong>in</strong>to a disastrous (fake)<br />

marriage. Desperate to have it annulled he plots with<br />

Doctor Malatesta to expose his wife’s <strong>in</strong>fideltity (Cheti,<br />

cheti, immant<strong>in</strong>ente).<br />

Faust Charles Gounod (1818-1893)<br />

Faust, <strong>in</strong>spired by Goe<strong>the</strong>’s play, cemented Gounod’s<br />

reputation <strong>in</strong> French opera. Alerte! is <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al trio of<br />

Méphistophélès (Satan), Faust (who has sold his soul <strong>in</strong><br />

exchange for youth, sensual pleasures and riches) and<br />

Marguerite (<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>nocent girl betrayed by Faust).<br />

Marguerite has killed her illegitimate child, become<br />

socially ostracised and now awaits execution.<br />

Méphistophélès and Faust attempt to save her.<br />

As Méphistophélès pressures <strong>the</strong> lovers to flee she<br />

recognises him as <strong>the</strong> devil and implores heaven to<br />

save her. Contrite, Faust begs her to escape; she<br />

refuses and dies with prayers on her lips.<br />

Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)<br />

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)<br />

The play by Beaumarchais (1784) which <strong>in</strong>spired Figaro<br />

had been banned <strong>in</strong> Vienna by Emperor Joseph 11. Its<br />

publication was eventually allowed on <strong>the</strong> premise that<br />

chambermaids and manservants, who enthusiastically<br />

attended <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>atre, did not read books! Traditionally,<br />

<strong>the</strong> feudal lord had <strong>the</strong> privilege of deflower<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

servant girls on <strong>the</strong>ir wedd<strong>in</strong>g night; Mozart was<br />

attack<strong>in</strong>g this and o<strong>the</strong>r noble privileges.<br />

In an effort to distract <strong>the</strong> Count from sabotag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

forthcom<strong>in</strong>g marriage, Figaro and Susanna conspire<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Countess and <strong>the</strong> young page, Cherub<strong>in</strong>o.<br />

All is <strong>in</strong> chaos as Figaro’s joke backfires and <strong>the</strong> ire of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Count is <strong>in</strong>flamed. Add<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> confusion is <strong>the</strong><br />

sudden appearance of Marcell<strong>in</strong>a, Bartolo and Basilio<br />

who are mak<strong>in</strong>g a legal claim on Figaro! This excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ensemble is <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ale to Act11 of Figaro.<br />

Part Two<br />

Carmen Bizet (1838-1875)<br />

Carmen, an outspoken, provocative gypsy, compla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

her seductive song, Habanera, of <strong>the</strong> fickle nature of<br />

love as she flirts with <strong>the</strong> soldiers of Seville outside <strong>the</strong><br />

tobacco factory where she works.<br />

La Rond<strong>in</strong>e (The Swallow) Pucc<strong>in</strong>i (1858-1924)<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g Act 11 of this lyric comedy, Magda, a Parisian<br />

courtesan and mistress to a rich banker, has disguised<br />

herself as a servant and with her maid Lisette and <strong>the</strong><br />

poet Prunier, has ventured to Bullier’s restaurant<br />

where, amidst much dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and laughter (Bevo al<br />

tuo fresco sorriso), she has danced and fallen <strong>in</strong> love<br />

with Ruggero.<br />

Don Carlos Verdi<br />

Don Carlos is <strong>in</strong> prison await<strong>in</strong>g execution. Rodrigo,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Marquis of Posa arrives <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g Don that he will<br />

be saved but that Posa himself must die for treachery.<br />

Posa had previously carried politically sensitive documents<br />

for Don Carlos and now must pay for it (Per me giunto).<br />

La Boheme (Bohemian life) Pucc<strong>in</strong>i<br />

The penniless poet, Rodolfo, has just met his shy<br />

neighbour, Mimi, a seamstress, with whom he confides<br />

his dreams of love (Che gelida la man<strong>in</strong>a).<br />

Candide Leonard Bernste<strong>in</strong> (1918-1990)<br />

Candide is a cross between a musical and an opera; <strong>the</strong><br />

enormous vocal and <strong>the</strong>atrical demands of this work<br />

are exemplified <strong>in</strong> Glitter and be Gay, Cunegonde’s rapid<br />

coloratura aria. Based on Voltaire’s novel, Candide<br />

relates <strong>the</strong> adventures of Cunegonde and Candide as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y seek <strong>the</strong> best of all possible worlds.<br />

A Little Light Music Stephen Sondheim (b.1930)<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> composer’s most popular works is Send<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Clowns which is sung with great irony <strong>in</strong> this sad<br />

tale of repressed desires, thwarted opportunities and<br />

carnal attraction.<br />

Westside Story Bernste<strong>in</strong><br />

It is <strong>the</strong> mid 1950’s; Maria and Tony are lovers from<br />

two oppos<strong>in</strong>g gangs <strong>in</strong> New York’s West Side. Maria<br />

has just heard that Tony has killed her bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong><br />

a gangland fight. Somewhere communicates her love<br />

for and forgiveness of Tony.<br />

Carousel Rodgers (1902-1979) & Hammerste<strong>in</strong><br />

Billy, a poor carnival worker, has severely failed his wife<br />

and child by becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volved and killed <strong>in</strong> a robbery.<br />

In heaven, he is given tasks to appease his conscience.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al song You’ll Never Walk Alone br<strong>in</strong>gs some<br />

comfort to <strong>the</strong> family.<br />

YIDAKI SOLO<br />

The yidaki is <strong>the</strong> au<strong>the</strong>ntic didjeridu (didgeridoo) used<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Yolngu people from Yirrkali <strong>in</strong> North Eastern<br />

Arnem land. This traditional <strong>in</strong>strument is played by<br />

a circular breath<strong>in</strong>g technique <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>take of<br />

breath through <strong>the</strong> nose whilst simultaneously blow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out with <strong>the</strong> mouth to create a cont<strong>in</strong>uous sound.<br />

Showboat Jerome Kern (1885-1945) & Hammerste<strong>in</strong><br />

Magnolia has asked Joe, <strong>the</strong> Negro dock hand on <strong>the</strong><br />

riverboat, for advice about a handsome gambler aboard <strong>the</strong><br />

boat. Joe replies that <strong>the</strong>re are lots more like him on <strong>the</strong><br />

river. He <strong>the</strong>n suggests to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r dock hands that she<br />

might just as well confide <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great Mississippi River.<br />

The Merry Widow Franz Lehár (1870-1948)<br />

At a glitter<strong>in</strong>g party of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>credibly wealthy widow,<br />

Hanna Glawari, <strong>the</strong> men remark on <strong>the</strong> problems of<br />

handl<strong>in</strong>g women (Women, women, women): what to th<strong>in</strong>k,<br />

what to say, what to do...what a wonderful day if we knew!<br />

An <strong>in</strong>stant phenomenal success, The Merry Widow<br />

ensured <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uation of Viennese operetta a<br />

generation after <strong>the</strong> popularity of Offenbach, Johann<br />

Strauss and Franz von Suppé.<br />

Gasparone Karl Millöcker (1842-1899)<br />

Few of Millöcker’s operettas are still performed<br />

however, this operetta, an outlaw adventure mixed with<br />

romance and <strong>in</strong>trigue, rema<strong>in</strong>s popular <strong>in</strong> Austria and<br />

German. Dunkelrote Rosen (Dark red rose) sung by<br />

Count Erm<strong>in</strong>os, was <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> 1932 version<br />

by Ernst Steffan. Ironically Gasparone, <strong>the</strong> namesake<br />

and notorious bandit, never appears; he merely<br />

provides a scapegoat for all <strong>the</strong> misdeeds occurr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sicily <strong>the</strong> early n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century.<br />

Die Fledermaus (The Bat) Johann Strauss 11 (1825-1899)<br />

Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Orlofsky proposes a toast to K<strong>in</strong>g Champagne<br />

at his dazzl<strong>in</strong>g fancy dress ball. As <strong>the</strong> guests become<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>ebriated, Dr Faulk extols <strong>the</strong> virtues of<br />

<strong>the</strong> warm bro<strong>the</strong>rly and sisterly love that <strong>the</strong>y are all<br />

feel<strong>in</strong>g (Brüderle<strong>in</strong> und Schwesterle<strong>in</strong>).<br />

Le Nozze di Figaro Mozart<br />

All has now been resolved; Figaro’s parentage has been<br />

settled, <strong>the</strong> lovers are toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> Count has been<br />

exposed and forgiven for his attempted <strong>in</strong>fidelity. The<br />

party erupts <strong>in</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess and joyful celebration end<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tonight’s delightful adventure.<br />
