Lita CABELLUT (b.1961~, Spain) Born into an impoverished gypsy family in 1961 in Barcelona, Lita Cabellut is known for drawing deep connections between her insecure childhood and her works. Abandoned by her parents as an infant, she lived on the streets as an orphan for 13 years until she was adopted. Later on, while in Madrid, she came across the Museo Nacional del Prado where she was captivated by the works of Goya, Balzac, Rivera, and Rembrandt. Afterwards, Cabellut began creating portraits of surrounding people and expressing the pains she experienced during her childhood. As well as creating a series of portraits of contemporary figures that are in a state of repression, she also created “A la mesa” (meaning “At the table” in Spanish). Both series show the use of a limited range of colours and subtly express the pain that everyone experiences, which evoke a response from viewers. Recently, she has become more flexible in terms of her choice of colours, and her current works, unlike her earlier works, illustrate the direction of the figure’s gaze, and the details of their eyes. Her recent portraits still maintain intensity and a richness of emotions, but the lines are softer compared to her earlier portraits. She has since been living in Amsterdam, and at the 2005 Miami Art Fair, she was able to enter the global art market and gain wide acclaim and popularity for her works.
