(The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art)
David MACH
(b.1956~, Scotland)
Born in 1956 in Methil, Scotland, David Mach began attending the Duncan of Jordanstone
College of Art in 1974 where he experimented with different techniques and continued
to develop these methods. After graduating he received his Master’s degree from the Royal
College of Art, located in London. In 1988, he was nominated for the Turner Prize, and in 1998
he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts. He currently lives
in London, actively taking part in the art world and working on new projects.
Mach’s works primarily involve the combination of modern forms of art that require mass
production and replication, and traditional forms of art. Magazines, worn out teddy
bears, newspapers, car tyres, matchsticks, coat hangers, etc are some of the main media
he uses for his works. These materials are examples of objects that are mass-produced and
easily disposed, but Mach manages to transform these objects into impressive works that
are prominent in today’s art world. When viewers see his works at first glance, they are able
to identify the famous figures or images depicted. However, when examining the works
more carefully a viewer realize that the larger, more explicit image is composed of
smaller images. The larger image is a series of overlapping postcards. Mach purposely
uses materials that are easily accessible, such as postcards and magazines to symbolize
the excessive media and consumerism that is present in a highly commercialized society.
Living in a world flooded with images, it is difficult to interpret the exact meanings of these
images unless people make the extra effort to find out. In other words, at an age when there
is an oversupply of images, people must make the effort to find out the exact meaning of
each image, and realize that these images hold metaphoric meanings in order to properly
understand the images around them.
In a world that is extensively influenced by the media, and promotes an expeditious
lifestyle, decisions must be made quickly and people are not given opportunities to look back.
Drawing from this idea, Mach uses his works as a way to encourage people to pause for
a moment and observe. Rain man 2010 Mixed media postcards on wood 152,4 x 152,4 cm

Gérard RANCINAN
(b.1953~, France)
Born in 1953 in Bordeaux, France, Gérard Rancinan has travelled around the world, witnessing
important and historic incidents. The occurrences of environmental crises, war, riots etc. had
allowed him to experience the many facets of humanity and the series of random events.
He uses his desire to self-express as a tool to direct people’s attention to the issues that
he had personally witnessed and experienced. His works demonstrate the transformation
of aesthetics, and often depicts shocking images.
Rancinan constantly faces and overcomes obstacles while he investigates the great
events and stories of modern life and takes portrait photos. As an artist who is interested in
contemporary world issues, his thought process, ability to accurately observe the world
today, and formalities of contemporary art are important elements in his life. Rancinan’s
works are inspired by reality, however, they are not mere depictions or reflections of
the real world today, and suggest something beyond what is actually seen. Each of his
works explores an insecure world. Rancinan’s photos have a poetic meaning to them, while
other works suggest an enlightening vision of our world. The creativity shown in his works is
unconventional and rejects the influence of other styles, which shocks viewers.
Rancinan uses unique methods to express his own interpretations, breaking the boundaries of
conventional photography. His photos have become well-known internationally proving
his works to be valuable and praiseworthy, which has won him many awards.
Rancinan’s works have been exhibited in globally distinguished galleries, art museums,
and important art collections as his works have gained global attention. At the Étude Millon
Auction held in 2008 in Drouot, Rancinan was ranked as one of the highest artists among
French photographers. Marie 2002 Argentic print mounted on plexiglas in artist’s frame, edition of 3 218 x 180 cm

Youssef NABIL
(b.1972~, Egypt)
Born in 1972 in Cairo, Egypt, Youssef Nabil is known for working with both film and
photography for his works. He has been working as a photographer since 1992, and his
photos create the illusion that one is watching a film. Nabil uses his own life as a subject
for his films, while at other times he films an incident as a witness or an observer. Nabil
creates his works on the idea that everything captured in a film is not real and that actors
are merely playing a game. His works mainly portray Middle Eastern conflicts, the Egyptian
revolution, fantasies, and the glamour of Egyptian actors.
While working as an assistant for a photographer in New York in the 1990s, Nabil took portrait
photos of friends, other artists, and women in their sleep as he began to focus on themes
concerning unconsciousness and dreams. He returned to Egypt and developed his own
technique of painting over his photos using his hands. His works mainly revolve around the
themes of worldly realities and dreams, loneliness and honour, sex and death.
Nabil paints over gelatin silver print using his unique method, erasing the flaws that exist
in reality and stimulating the rise of Egyptian films. People often make assumptions that
photography or paintings are a part of pop culture, or a form of aesthetics, and are only
familiar with common forms of art. However, Nabil breaks these barriers by using his
own media, arousing a sense of longing and nostalgia. Nabil has exhibited his works at
the British Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA), the Bonn Museum of
Modern Art etc. and has held solo and group exhibitions in various cities. He currently
lives in New York. Nabila Ebeid Cairo 2001 Hand coloured gelatin silver print 39 x 27 cm

Mr. Brainwash
(b.1966~, France)
Born in 1966 in France, Thierry Guetta began his career as an artist, working under the
pseudonym ‘Mr. Brainwash’ after immigrating to the United States. According to Banksy’s
documentary ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ in which Guetta is the subject of the film,
Guetta currently lives in Los Angeles.
While living in Los Angeles, he was involved in commercial business. However, through
the influence of different street artists including his cousin Invader, distinguished street
artist Shepard Fairey, and world renown British street artist Banksy, Guetta was able to pave
his way to becoming an artist himself.
Mr. Brainwash’s first solo exhibition ‘Life is Beautiful’ held in 2008 in Los Angeles, caused
a huge uproar in the art world, attracting as many as seven thousand viewers to the
opening and filling the front page of several Los Angeles newspapers introducing the rising artist.
His second exhibition ‘Icons’ held in 2010 in New York fully demonstrated his talent.
The exhibition took place in a 1400m 2 warehouse, displaying up to five hundred
large-scale works, and was labeled as a must-see exhibition. At this exhibition, portraits of
Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Einstein, Jackson Pollock, and other icons that had
represented contemporary society for the past fifty years were included. Both of these
exhibitions achieved great success, and Mr. Brainwash received global attention from all
art enthusiasts, anticipating that he will become one of the greatest artists of this century.
Lita CABELLUT
(b.1961~, Spain)
Born into an impoverished gypsy family in 1961 in Barcelona, Lita Cabellut is known for
drawing deep connections between her insecure childhood and her works. Abandoned
by her parents as an infant, she lived on the streets as an orphan for 13 years until she was
adopted. Later on, while in Madrid, she came across the Museo Nacional del Prado where
she was captivated by the works of Goya, Balzac, Rivera, and Rembrandt.
Afterwards, Cabellut began creating portraits of surrounding people and expressing
the pains she experienced during her childhood. As well as creating a series of portraits
of contemporary figures that are in a state of repression, she also created “A la mesa”
(meaning “At the table” in Spanish). Both series show the use of a limited range of colours
and subtly express the pain that everyone experiences, which evoke a response from
viewers. Recently, she has become more flexible in terms of her choice of colours, and her
current works, unlike her earlier works, illustrate the direction of the figure’s gaze, and
the details of their eyes. Her recent portraits still maintain intensity and a richness of
emotions, but the lines are softer compared to her earlier portraits.
At the age of 17, Cabellut launched her first exhibition in the Town Hall Square in Masnou,
located in Barcelona, and at 19, she changed her nationality from Spanish to Dutch to
open herself up to new challenges. She has since been living in Amsterdam, and at the
2005 Miami Art Fair, she was able to enter the global art market and gain wide acclaim
and popularity for her works. Maria Callas 02 2012 Mixed media on canvas 200 x 180 cm

Jean-Pierre ROC-ROUSSEY
(b.1951~, France)
Born in 1951 in Paris, France, Jean-Pierre Roc-Roussey currently lives in Paris and the South
of France where he has a studio, actively working on new projects. He uses a mixture of
elements from Neo-Classicism and the Renaissance to create depictions of mystical
figures that are often represented in his works, and remind viewers of mythical or legendary
characters. This is derived from his hobby of collecting cultural items, most notably from
the West and Eastern Europe, and now he has gained a new interest in Asian culture,
which explains the frequent portrayal of Asian women in his most recent works.
Roc-Roussey chooses to avoid the norm and rejects symmetry, depicting the muscular
characters in his works with soft brushstrokes. Contrary to their muscular bodies, the faces
of the characters are proportionally small and highly detailed which intensifies the dramatic
nature of his works. Though the shapes and forms of the figures are exaggerated
and theatrical, their gestures suggest elegance and grace. This element is influenced
by Gustav Klimt’s style of adding iridescence and elegance to his works through the use
of delicate brushstrokes. Roc-Roussey often uses bright blue, red, gold, silver etc. which
exhibit magnificence and brilliance.
Experimenting with a range of colours and compositions, Jean-Pierre Roc-Roussey is loved
by many from different cultures. With his creativity and progressiveness, Roc-Roussey
creates his own unique style, and the grand gestures of the characters allude in his works
to his gradual influence on the art world. Vénus florentine 2007 Oil on canvas 100 x 35 cm

André MONET
(b.1965~, Canada)
Born in 1965 in Montreal, Canada, André Monet studied graphic design at the Université
Laval and went on to work in the field of fashion for several years while maintaining an
interest in art and experimenting with different media including mosaic, collage and acrylic.
Known for creating portraits of famous icons, André Monet is acclaimed for his new and
interesting approach to portraiture. Inspired by cinema, photography, music and
literature, he takes pictures or texts from old magazines and incorporates them onto the
canvas then uses acrylic paint and a toothbrush to add details. Monet’s new approach to
creating portraits is considered avant-garde yet classic, which suggests balance. The
absence of bright colours and flamboyance allows viewers to notice a sense of inner strength
behind these representations.
The use of old magazines and newspapers as a background, and the illustration of past
figures, as well as contemporary figures on top of the text, remind viewers of the immense
influence of these famous icons while viewing these portraits. Coco 2011 Mixed media on canvas 122 x 91.5 cm
