2012-2013 Season
Opéra National de Bordeaux (France)
a rich artistic programme
and a brand new auditorium in the New Year
This coming 2012/2013 season, 194,000 seats will be on offer (excluding
events for young audiences). This represents a 21% increase in the
number of tickets available, mainly due to the opening of the Auditorium.
Including the Jeune Public (young audience) season, over 210,000 seats will
be for sale.
This season will be filled with great artistic productions and exciting new
encounters. The Opéra National de Bordeaux will welcome French soprano
Mireille Delunsch and Jordi Savall as singers in residence, celebrate the
anniversary of the re-opening of the Grand-Théâtre, and inaugurate
Bordeaux's new Auditorium…
Seven operas are programmed, with five new productions (including the world
premiere of Oscar Stasnoy's Slutchaï, presented during the Novart Bordeaux
Festival). This opera season will also feature Mireille Delunsch as artistic
associate. She will star in 2013 as Salomé, and direct the Bordeaux production of
an opera that is particularly close to her heart: Dialogues des Carmélites.
Also much involved in the upcoming season is Laura Scozzi, who will stage a new
production of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld and present a revival of her
Magic Flute, against a backdrop of the snowy Bavarian mountains.
Four exceptional events will be hosted this season by the Grand-Théâtre and
the Auditorium: Jordi Savall as singer in residence, a recital by Karita Mattila one
of the greatest voices of our time, and, as part of the "Esprit du piano" festival, two
unique performances by world piano stars Ivo Pogorelich and Lang Lang.
In honour of Rudof Nureyev
Under the leadership of Charles Jude, this year's season of the Ballet de l’Opéra
National de Bordeaux will feature not only three great classical ballets (Giselle –
Sleeping Beauty – Coppélia), but also recent hit productions by Claude
Brumachon and Itzik Galili. To celebrate what would have been Nureyev's 75th
birthday, which is in fact the 20th anniversary of his death, the 2013 "Quatre
tendances" ballet festival will be held in his honour, from March 16 to 25. One of
the new productions, by Itik Galili, will be based on the character of Nureyev.
A homage to John Cage - with the participation of Benjamin Millepied
Among the other companies invited (such as Grupo Corpo, Anne Teresa de
Keersmaeker, Le Poème harmonique, and Ushio Amagatsu), Proxima Centauri
will welcome Benjamin Millepied and his company, L.A. Dance Project, to produce
a show of music and dance in honour of the 100th anniversary of American
composer John Cage.

The auditorium... at last !
The ONBA will finally leave the Palais des Sports in June 2012. In the autumn, they will present a "Brahms cycle"
in honour of this leading composer of the Romantic period, who remains a pillar of the orchestra's repertoire. As
part of this cycle, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine will perform eight concerts on October 8, 9 and 10,
with great soloists such as David Kadouch, Isabelle Faust, Franck Braley, and Nicholas Angelich.
The opening of the Bordeaux Auditorium will mark the beginning of a new musical era, celebrated by six months
of festivities with an exciting musical programme, to be revealed in November. Together, orchestra and audience
will discover the full range of possibilities of this new hall through symphonic pieces, chamber music, baroque and
contemporary works. Notably, the Auditorium will host the world premiere of an electro-acoustic concerto by Max
de Wardener, to be conducted by Kwamé Ryan.
Partnerships with opera houses worldwide
Once again this season, the Opéra National de Bordeaux continues to develop partnerships and co-productions
at regional, national (with Angers-Nantes Opéra, Besançon, Marseille...) and international (with Houston Grand
Opera, Canadian Opera company - Opera Australia, Stadttheater Bern, Staatstheater Nürnberg…) levels.
Every season, the Opéra National de Bordeaux invites the public to take part in various artistic programmes, such
as: ateliers de pratique - adult workshops conducted by choir and ballet artists from the Opéra National de
Bordeaux... public scolaire et Jeune Public activities organized for school children and young audiences...
Artistes en chemin training programmes set up for young artists by the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacques-
Thibaud – Cefedem-... Campus en musique-Printemps des étudiants, Paradis des étudiants activities aimed
at students...
In collaboration with the Institut Bergonié (cancer hospital) and the Script cultural association, the Opéra National
de Bordeaux has created a cultural programme specifically adapted to the needs of handicapped and
hospitalized persons.
In addition to the audio description of three great lyrical works, specific activities for the visually impaired are
available. The Grand-Théâtre is now accessible to all, thanks to a new tactile model specifically designed for the
visually impaired. The project is supported by the Orange Foundation and the new model will be inaugurated on
September 15 and 16, 2012, during the French Journées du Patrimoine.
