Opéra <strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux (<strong>France</strong>)<br />

a rich artistic programme<br />

<strong>and</strong> a br<strong>and</strong> new auditorium in the New Year<br />

This coming <strong>2012</strong>/<strong>2013</strong> season, 194,000 seats will be on offer (excluding<br />

events for young audiences). This represents a 21% increase in the<br />

number of tickets available, mainly due to the opening of the Auditorium.<br />

Including the Jeune Public (young audience) season, over 210,000 seats will<br />

be for sale.<br />

This season will be filled with great artistic productions <strong>and</strong> exciting new<br />

encounters. The Opéra <strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux will welcome French soprano<br />

Mireille Delunsch <strong>and</strong> Jordi Savall as singers in resi<strong>de</strong>nce, celebrate the<br />

anniversary of the re-opening of the Gr<strong>and</strong>-Théâtre, <strong>and</strong> inaugurate<br />

Bor<strong>de</strong>aux's new Auditorium…<br />

Seven operas are programmed, with five new productions (including the world<br />

premiere of Oscar Stasnoy's Slutchaï, presented during the Novart Bor<strong>de</strong>aux<br />

Festival). This opera season will also feature Mireille Delunsch as artistic<br />

associate. She will star in <strong>2013</strong> as Salomé, <strong>and</strong> direct the Bor<strong>de</strong>aux production of<br />

an opera that is particularly close to her heart: Dialogues <strong>de</strong>s Carmélites.<br />

Also much involved in the upcoming season is Laura Scozzi, who will stage a new<br />

production of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Un<strong>de</strong>rworld <strong>and</strong> present a revival of her<br />

Magic Flute, against a backdrop of the snowy Bavarian mountains.<br />

Four exceptional events will be hosted this season by the Gr<strong>and</strong>-Théâtre <strong>and</strong><br />

the Auditorium: Jordi Savall as singer in resi<strong>de</strong>nce, a recital by Karita Mattila one<br />

of the greatest voices of our time, <strong>and</strong>, as part of the "Esprit du piano" festival, two<br />

unique performances by world piano stars Ivo Pogorelich <strong>and</strong> Lang Lang.<br />

In honour of Rudof Nureyev<br />

Un<strong>de</strong>r the lea<strong>de</strong>rship of Charles Ju<strong>de</strong>, this year's season of the Ballet <strong>de</strong> l’Opéra<br />

<strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux will feature not only three great classical ballets (Giselle –<br />

Sleeping Beauty – Coppélia), but also recent hit productions by Clau<strong>de</strong><br />

Brumachon <strong>and</strong> Itzik Galili. To celebrate what would have been Nureyev's 75th<br />

birthday, which is in fact the 20th anniversary of his <strong>de</strong>ath, the <strong>2013</strong> "Quatre<br />

tendances" ballet festival will be held in his honour, from March 16 to 25. One of<br />

the new productions, by Itik Galili, will be based on the character of Nureyev.<br />

A homage to John Cage - with the participation of Benjamin Millepied<br />

Among the other companies invited (such as Grupo Corpo, Anne Teresa <strong>de</strong><br />

Keersmaeker, Le Poème harmonique, <strong>and</strong> Ushio Amagatsu), Proxima Centauri<br />

will welcome Benjamin Millepied <strong>and</strong> his company, L.A. Dance Project, to produce<br />

a show of music <strong>and</strong> dance in honour of the 100th anniversary of American<br />

composer John Cage.<br />

The auditorium... at last !<br />

The ONBA will finally leave the Palais <strong>de</strong>s Sports in June <strong>2012</strong>. In the autumn, they will present a "Brahms cycle"<br />

in honour of this leading composer of the Romantic period, who remains a pillar of the orchestra's repertoire. As<br />

part of this cycle, the Orchestre <strong>National</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux Aquitaine will perform eight concerts on October 8, 9 <strong>and</strong> 10,<br />

with great soloists such as David Kadouch, Isabelle Faust, Franck Braley, <strong>and</strong> Nicholas Angelich.<br />

The opening of the Bor<strong>de</strong>aux Auditorium will mark the beginning of a new musical era, celebrated by six months<br />

of festivities with an exciting musical programme, to be revealed in November. Together, orchestra <strong>and</strong> audience<br />

will discover the full range of possibilities of this new hall through symphonic pieces, chamber music, baroque <strong>and</strong><br />

contemporary works. Notably, the Auditorium will host the world premiere of an electro-acoustic concerto by Max<br />

<strong>de</strong> War<strong>de</strong>ner, to be conducted by Kwamé Ryan.<br />

Partnerships with opera houses worldwi<strong>de</strong><br />

Once again this season, the Opéra <strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux continues to <strong>de</strong>velop partnerships <strong>and</strong> co-productions<br />

at regional, national (with Angers-Nantes Opéra, Besançon, Marseille...) <strong>and</strong> international (with Houston Gr<strong>and</strong><br />

Opera, Canadian Opera company - Opera Australia, Stadttheater Bern, Staatstheater Nürnberg…) levels.<br />

Every season, the Opéra <strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux invites the public to take part in various artistic programmes, such<br />

as: ateliers <strong>de</strong> pratique - adult workshops conducted by choir <strong>and</strong> ballet artists from the Opéra <strong>National</strong> <strong>de</strong><br />

Bor<strong>de</strong>aux... public scolaire et Jeune Public activities organized for school children <strong>and</strong> young audiences...<br />

Artistes en chemin training programmes set up for young artists by the Conservatoire <strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux Jacques-<br />

Thibaud – Cefe<strong>de</strong>m-... Campus en musique-Printemps <strong>de</strong>s étudiants, Paradis <strong>de</strong>s étudiants activities aimed<br />

at stu<strong>de</strong>nts...<br />

In collaboration with the Institut Bergonié (cancer hospital) <strong>and</strong> the Script cultural association, the Opéra <strong>National</strong><br />

<strong>de</strong> Bor<strong>de</strong>aux has created a cultural programme specifically adapted to the needs of h<strong>and</strong>icapped <strong>and</strong><br />

hospitalized persons.<br />

In addition to the audio <strong>de</strong>scription of three great lyrical works, specific activities for the visually impaired are<br />

available. The Gr<strong>and</strong>-Théâtre is now accessible to all, thanks to a new tactile mo<strong>de</strong>l specifically <strong>de</strong>signed for the<br />

visually impaired. The project is supported by the Orange Foundation <strong>and</strong> the new mo<strong>de</strong>l will be inaugurated on<br />

September 15 <strong>and</strong> 16, <strong>2012</strong>, during the French Journées du Patrimoine.<br />
