Net metering permits electricity customers to offset some of the cost of their individual electricity consumption by self-generating. Net metering allows a grid-connected electricity customer who installs their own renewable generation equipment to return electricity to the grid for credit against consumption, instead of having to store it in batteries. At times when the customer's generation exceeds their requirements, the excess goes into the grid. When the customer's requirements exceed their generation, they take power from the grid.
