Annual baseball game to benefit School<br />

The Kent State University Flashes will face The<br />

University of <strong>Akron</strong> Zips on Thursday, May 16, for<br />

the seventh annual Diamond Classic for Kids. The<br />

first pitch will be thrown at 6:35 p.m. at Canal Park<br />

in downtown <strong>Akron</strong>.<br />

“It’s a great family event,” said Michele Wilmoth, MSN,<br />

RN, nurse manager, School Health Services. “Kids<br />

and families can enjoy watching a college baseball<br />

game and take part in other exciting activities. It<br />

really is a fun time!”<br />

Staff from School Health Services will be on hand<br />

to take tickets, perform safety demonstrations, and<br />

talk to families about health and wellness. The entire<br />

Kids’ Zone at Canal Park also will be open throughout<br />

the game.<br />

Funds from this year’s event will go toward education,<br />

training and equipment that School Health Services<br />

needs to improve the delivery of care it provides<br />

children in the <strong>Akron</strong> Public School system and other<br />

suburban school districts. Since it started, the<br />

Diamond Classic for Kids has raised more than<br />

$80,000 for the department.<br />

‘Hail to the Chefs’<br />

Preview for Taste of Hudson to benefit Safe Kids Coalition<br />

Reserve your tickets for the eighth annual “Hail<br />

to the Chefs” fundraising gala on Friday, May 10<br />

at 7 p.m.<br />

Held once again at the Lake Forest Country Club<br />

in Hudson, the event is a preview night for Taste<br />

of Hudson and features selections from some of<br />

the area’s finest chefs. It also raises funds and<br />

recognition for the hospital-based Safe Kids USA ®<br />

coalition and several other worthwhile community<br />

organizations.<br />

This year’s event takes place three weeks earlier than<br />

previous years, and Mr. and Mrs. Shawn M. Lyden will<br />

serve as honorary chairs. Tickets cost $90 each and<br />

include one entry for the Ultimate Raffle Experience,<br />

where you can win great prizes. Groups of eight or<br />

more may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of<br />

“It’s a fantastic event,” said Joni Fitch, coordinator<br />

of special projects for <strong>Akron</strong> Children’s <strong>Hospital</strong><br />

Foundation. “People can get together and have good<br />

food and great drinks and a portion of the proceeds<br />

from the event come to the hospital.”<br />
