At Home 

DAB home radios currently on the market include tuners, kitchen radios, CD players, clock radios, boom-boxes, midi-systems, home cinema 

systems and separates that plug into existing hi-fi systems. Whilst some manufacturers have developed DAB-only products, others have 

developed combined DAB/FM/AM/CD/MP3 units. Manufacturers have also catered for the possibility of receiving text, so the displays are 

large enough for data transmitted along with the radio programme. Models delivering additional features have also been developed, with 

rewind and pause; record functionality and electronic programme guide (EPG) are also being integrated into some models.

In the Car 

Most DAB in-car radios consists of 3 parts; the digital radio black box (stored in the boot, under the seat or behind the dash board), a 

compatible head unit and a compact digital aerial. All in-car DAB receivers combine DAB, FM and AM. Some manufacturers also produce 

receivers that are complete all-in-one digital radios without a boot box and which fits into standard mounting frames. DAB Products enabled 

with DMB functionality are also entering the market to receive tv -like services – these are also listed below.

DAB PC receivers plug into your computer and allow you to listen to your preferred digital radio programmes and access data services whilst 

working on your computer. The receiver’s functions are directly controlled from your computer screen. LG and Samsung have produced 

two DMB-enabled DAB PC notebooks. Perstel has also produced a DMB-enabled USB device which will enter the market soon.

Products that have a Pause/Rewind functionality are able to pause or rewind live DAB services if listening has been interrupted or 

something has been missed. With a single press of a button you can rewind or put a station on hold. After the interruption, listening 

can continue from the point at which you left it or you can rewind to retrieve what you have missed. 

Some products can pause/rewind for up to 40 minutes depending on the station you are listening to. Other products have a smaller 

memory capacity and can pause for up to 5 minutes.. 

[DMB-enabled] 

The World DAB Forum recently endorsed two applications, designed to broadcast AV(audio and video) streaming and multimedia 

to mobile handsets, using DAB as a transport medium and integrated wherever a DAB infrastructure already exists. The first of 

these is the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) application recently approved by the European Telecommunications Standard 

Institute (ETSI). The second is an application, which uses IP to broadcast the content to mobile devices. 

Products capable of receiving video and multimedia services are being developed by a number of manufacturers in the in-car, PC, 

PDA-like and mobile phone form factors. LG, Samsung and Perstel were the first to capitalise on these new opportunities with the 

launch of the first DMB enabled devices. 

A selection of DAB products has been on the market since 1999. Most manufacturers have established a mid-range price point. 

For the audio enthusiast there are more expensive products on offer. Receiver prices will vary from country to country.
