Eichler At press time, West Texas Intermediate was $77 on Nymex for September delivery, while BP had just announced some 400,000 barrels of daily Prudhoe Bay production would be offline for possibly several months during repair of some 16 miles of pipeline. September-delivery Henry Hub gas was trading at roughly $7, while gas in storage remained large, and unhedged producers were concerned about forward prices. This price volatility is what upstream acquisitions and divestitures thrive on—where buyers and sellers see the futures market differently. Nearly 400 of these buyers and sellers are profiled in these pages this year in our fifth annual directory of go-to personnel within E&P companies for acquiring and divesting assets. They represent some 260 companies, from major oils to private start-ups. Contacts for the integrated oils here represent BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Marathon, Murphy, Hess Corp. and Occidental. The largest U.S. independents are here too, including Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, Apache, Chesapeake Energy, XTO Energy, Pogo Producing, Pioneer Natural Resources, Range Resources, EOG Resources, Cimarex Energy, Southwestern Energy, Newfield Exploration, Swift Energy and Forest Oil. And, several Canadian companies are included: EnCana Corp., Nexen Inc., Enerplus and Provident, to name a few. Some of last year’s participants, such as Burlington Resources, have since been sold. Some in this year’s edition were in the midst of being acquired at press time, including Stone Energy Corp., Kerr-McGee Corp. and Western Gas Resources. Some participants are entirely new, such as Phoenix Exploration, a start-up by former Gryphon Exploration team members, and Lime Rock Resources, which has been formed with direct institutional funding arranged and sponsored by private-equity firm Lime Rock Partners.
