The name MagLev is derived from Magnetic Levitation<br />
System, the industry-leading fan that was first<br />
introduced by <strong>Sunon</strong> in 1999 Q4. In 2003, <strong>Sunon</strong> unveils<br />
the newly renamed "MagLev" to more concisely convey<br />
the meaning of the product. With MagLev, you enjoy<br />
the high level of precision that comes with this<br />
technology, but with a new and simplified name.<br />

Introduction<br />
Here is a good example to help in understanding the<br />
principles behind the MagLev System. When a spinning<br />
top (a kind of toy) is thrown off-balance, the top<br />
continues to accelerate even as it falls to the ground.<br />
During this acceleration the top tilts and sways until a<br />
consistent speed is reached. At this point, the top will<br />
rebalance itself (meaning the swaying and tilting will<br />
have stopped), and become stationary perpendicular to<br />
the ground. This is the simple concept behind <strong>Sunon</strong>'s<br />
MagLev System.<br />

From the illustration above, we know that no matter<br />
how the fan is mounted, the force induced by the<br />
existing magnet inside the hub and the MagLev plate<br />
added to the PCB of the fan continues to exert a pulling<br />
force on the rotor. This results in the rotor rotating<br />
perpendicular to the ground with a constant distance<br />
between bearing and shaft without any contact.<br />
Therefore, no friction or noise can occur, resulting in<br />
extremely long lifespan for the fan. This is the<br />
spectacular contribution provided by the MagLev<br />

About the SUNON MagLev Motor Fan<br />
For general fans, the principle of like-pole repulsion<br />
applies to their rotation. But with no control exerted<br />
over blade trajectory, the fan blades tend to produce<br />
irregular shuddering and vibrations. After extended<br />
use, the shaft will cause severe abrasion on the<br />
bearings, distorting them into a horn-like shape. The<br />
worn-out fan then starts to produce mechanical noises<br />
and its lifespan will be shortened.<br />
The unique features of <strong>Sunon</strong>'s MagLev fan are that the<br />
path of the fan blades during operation is magnetically<br />
controlled by <strong>Sunon</strong>'s patented MagLev System. The<br />
result is that the shaft and bearing do not come in<br />
contact with each other during operation, thus<br />
generating no friction no matter how the fan is<br />
oriented. This means that the abrasion noises associate<br />
with worn-out components typically heard on a general<br />
fan are not produced, making possible a lifespan of<br />
50,000 hours or longer at room temperature.<br />
To Identify a Maglev Fan<br />
For any fan, the imbedded magnets of the rotor and the<br />
stator exert repulsive forces, and it is this continuous<br />
force of repulsion that makes fan spin. This is the basic<br />
principle behind all cooling fans. If we could visualize<br />
the magnetic forces between the stator and the rotor,<br />
we would see dense lines of magnetic flux throughout<br />
the empty space, but without any controlling<br />
mechanism to limit the blade vibration during the<br />
repulsion-driven operation.<br />
With respect to the unique structural design of the<br />
MagLev fans, in addition to the standard magnetic flux,<br />
it also sports another innovative design - the MagLev<br />
Flux induced by MagLev System, as a control<br />
mechanism. <strong>Sunon</strong>'s MagLev fan includes just such a<br />
control mechanism, which represents a crucial and<br />
first-ever technology in producing its brilliant<br />
performance.<br />
view of the MagLev system reveals a uniquely designed<br />
set of conductive elements on the main board - the<br />
MagLev plate(A). This MagLev plate and the imbedded<br />
flexible magnets(B) in the fan blades together generate<br />
the vertical magnetic forces, which form the MagLev<br />
flux(C), an unique and patented invention by <strong>Sunon</strong>.<br />
From the cross-section, the standard magnetic flux(D)<br />
and the MagLev flux form a 90-degree vertical angle. In<br />
others words, the MagLev flux acts in perpendicular to<br />
the standard magnetic flux. This is the first key trait used<br />
to identify a MagLev motor fan. The vertically intersected<br />
standard magnetic flux and MagLev flux ensure that the<br />
rotator is affixed to the MagLev orbit. Regardless of the<br />
mounting angle of the fan, the shaft will always rotate<br />
around a fixed point and at a constant distance from the<br />
bearing without coming into contact with it to produce<br />
friction or mechanical noise. The problem of bearings<br />
being worn down into an oval or horn-like shape after<br />

The greatest benefit with MagLev flux is in fact the 360-<br />
degree complete force of attraction between the conductive<br />
element (MagLev plate) and the rotor above it. This ensures<br />
an evenly-distributed force of attraction to help keep the<br />
optimal balance of the rotor during operation and to avoid<br />
vibration or instability. Fans with well-balanced blades not<br />
only last longer but also produce a steadier airflow. In short,<br />
the second feature used to identify the MagLev motor fan is<br />
that the MagLev system creates a 360 0 -attraction on the<br />

To prolong the lifespan of any fan, it is not enough to<br />
simply put greater emphasis on the coupling precision<br />
between the shaft and bearing, or the type of lube oil<br />
used. By continuously making improvements in such<br />
areas as the motor's precision, lubrication, anti-rolling<br />
fatigue strength, stiffness, grind resistance,<br />
dimensional stability, mechanical strength, etc., but<br />
totally disregarding the implementation of more<br />

<strong>Sunon</strong>'s VAPO shaft bearing system has long proven its<br />
high efficiency with low internal temperature and long<br />
life within the industry. Why does the VAPO bearing<br />

process treatment given to its internal wall surface for a<br />
higher grind and heat resistance, the bearing is<br />

MagLev + Sleeve Bearing System<br />
For most applications, sleeve bearing is the best choice<br />
for an economical solution, which costs far less in<br />
comparison with ball bearings. Sleeve bearings rotate<br />
with the aid of lubricating oil, which make them more<br />
impact-resistant and result in less damage. These are<br />
qualities that ball bearings lack.<br />
If the sleeve bearing is coupled with <strong>Sunon</strong>'s MagLev Motor,<br />
not only will the problem of wear and tear between shaft<br />
and bearing be conquered, but the dust cap inside the<br />
system will also prevent the motor from getting stuck due<br />
to dust. With the MagLev design, sleeve bearing fully brings<br />
out the design's intended advantages to perform better at<br />
higher temperatures, with lower noise and longer lifespan.<br />
However such qualities are less promising when<br />
product lifespan is the foremost concern. Because the<br />
inner surface of Sleeve bearing's bore gets worn down<br />
easily, as dust from the outside may be rolling in and<br />
mixing with nitride particles generated by lubricating<br />
oil to clog the motor. This may result in excessive noise<br />
and much slower motor operation, impacting the fan's<br />

Ball bearings allow rotations to be made on steel balls,<br />
making possible a far longer lifespan than rotations on<br />
sleeve bearings. <strong>Sunon</strong>'s MagLev fan does not only have<br />

Weight of rotor is entirely loaded on to the<br />
shaft. Abrasive rotation between shaft and<br />

weak and unable to absorb external impact.<br />
The bearings can be easily damaged, causing<br />
louder rotational noise.<br />
Entire weight of rotor is completely<br />
suspended by magnetic force in any<br />
mounted position, keeping the rotor<br />
rotating evenly around a fixed axis, while<br />
maintaining a fixed distance from inner<br />
surface of the bearing. No more friction<br />

Oil ring, washer, and lubricant are no<br />
longer used in MagLev structure. Hence<br />
no more oil leakage or stuck rotor<br />

operation. For example, a multi-stage control loop<br />
that drops abruptly in speed when there is a slight drop<br />

General fan designs usually use lower voltages to<br />
achieve lower fan speed. If the customer requires<br />
1500 RPM as the lowest speed, operating voltage<br />
should meet 4-Volt or even lower, this would cause<br />
the sensitivity of sensing IC (Hall IC) rated at 3.5-Volt<br />
minimum operating voltage to be unstable, or to<br />
even quit working. The fan will then also stop<br />
rotating. Therefore, <strong>Sunon</strong>'s new technology has<br />

with low voltage for low speed, providing the<br />

SQlab II is a compact, mobile multi-channel<br />
measurement system for acoustic analysis, vibration<br />
investigation and sound design. It is used wherever<br />
investigation of sound quality should be combined<br />
with vibrational measurements.<br />
The comparison of vibrational measurements with<br />
acoustic signals enables the user to draw direct<br />
conclusions from sound sources and their sound<br />
quality. For this purpose, SQlab II is able to measure<br />
aurally-accurate recordings of sound events using an<br />
Artificial Head and vibration data with<br />
accelerometers, etc. at the same time. Thus,<br />
correlations between the subjective aural<br />
impressions of sound events (airborne sound) and<br />
the related sources (vibration, solid-borne sound) as<br />

It is very difficult to measure the air<br />
performance. The measurement varies by<br />
method. There are two methods to measure the<br />
static pressure and the airflow. One is wind<br />
tunnel and the other is the double chamber<br />
method. The performance specification of<br />
airflow and static pressure shown in this Web<br />
page is measuredly using the double chamber<br />
method. Here, we would like to explain the<br />
double chamber method. (See Figure #1) The<br />
variable exhaust system adjusts the air density<br />
by drawing out the air. Sudden opening of the<br />
nozzle induces the instantaneous change of<br />
the static pressure and the air flow. The<br />
pressure of each manometer is then read.<br />

Maximum Air Flow is measured under the<br />

chamber B by the variable exhaust system. At<br />
this point, the difference in air pressure<br />
