Letter
A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Something to be Nostalgic About
For many area adults, the recent
announcement of the museum’s
acquisition of four fiberglass animals
resulted in a nostalgic trip down the
memory lane of childhood. How
fortunate that the Zooland Animals of
the former Richman Gordman Stores
survived our rambunctious teen years
and let just enough time pass that we
can now enjoy and appreciate their
symbolic worth as mature adults.
I find a certain sister/brotherhood
in sharing this unique experience
with a collective group of adults,
many of us now raising children
of our own. As we reminisce, the
stories are flowing from all over the
world recounting special moments
with these animals — smells, sliding,
conquering Zooland, first kisses,
babysitting and more. I have a hunch
that our parents had no idea the
significance these moments would
have in our lives.
I have often said that as a children’s
museum, what we preserve is
childhood. The museum is embracing
this opportunity to restore and
recapture a special moment in time and
bring it to a new generation of children.

Like us, our children will step onto the
sandpaper steps, take in a whiff and
slide down that elephant’s long trunk.
And, they too, will eventually join our
nostalgic group celebrating their own
childhood experience.

Clifford’s Birthday Breakfast
Help the museum surprise Clifford with
a birthday party! Everyone will love
attending a birthday breakfast for their
favorite Big Red Dog, especially
when the museum is open
exclusively for birthday guests!
Guests will
meet Clifford,
have a light,
kid-friendly
breakfast and
participate in a
special scavenger
hunt focused
on Clifford’s
10 Big Ideas.
Each child will
get party favors and
and work together
to create a giant birthday card for
Clifford! Families will love playing in the
blockbuster exhibit! Help us celebrate
with Clifford on June 26, July 10 or
July 24 from 8-10 a.m. Cost is $ 20 per
person or $ 15 per person for members.

Being a Kid in the Big “O”
Omaha Children’s Museum is happy to
announce the acquisition of the beloved
Richman Gordman Zooland animals.
After receiving a tip about the elephant
on our Facebook page, we contacted
the seller and were directed to his eBay
auction. We won the auctions for the
elephant and the camel, but we didn’t
win the hippo. After much buzz in the
community and a front-page Omaha
World-Herald piece, the hippo-winning
bidder graciously donated the hippo to
the museum. We then received a call

from a Grand Island woman who
let us know she would also like to
donate her camel and kangaroo to our
our new Zooland! We’re excited to
unveil our complete set of animals in
their new habitat at our fall exhibit,
Big Backyard, opening in late October.
We’re also proud to announce that we
have had several contributions toward
the refurbishment of the animals,
including a gift from Gordman’s, who
will proudly sponsor the new Zooland
when it opens. If you would like to

Omaha Children’s Museum is honored
to be recognized by the Greater
Omaha Chamber of Commerce as
one of two Nonprofit Organizations
of the Year for 2010. The award
recognizes organizations for their
excellent stewardship of resources
and exceptional outcomes. We are
always thinking of ways to improve our
guests’ experience and how to better
deliver on our mission of engaging the
imagination and creating excitement
about learning.

you walk into Omaha Children’s Museum, the first things you

of all ages, but also provide great opportunities for children to learn and grow.
Several exhibits are aimed toward
teaching children about science, and
research is showing that these exhibits
could be valuable in shaping the

children about health science.
The study found that parents
and children who frequently visit
the museum report talking more
about science at home. The study
also found that children who visit the
museum often report more science
ability and a greater interest in science.
This research supports the claim
that an afternoon at the museum is
more than just a great time, but also
a positive influence on children’s
attitudes about learning.
Among so many other things, a
parent is the first teacher a child will
encounter, and the museum can
provide you with valuable tools. Every
exhibit at the museum is child-friendly,
but a child alone with an exhibit is
somewhat like a child sounding out
the words of a sentence. Sometimes
they need help linking it all together.
This is where you, the parent, come
in! By actively experiencing the
museum with your child, you can
be the glue that holds your child’s
learning together. Every time you
offer explanations and answers to
your child’s questions, you are helping
them develop the skills to answer
questions themselves. You know your
children better than anyone, and you
can help them make connections that
they may miss on their own.
For example, when you compare
something at the museum to
something they are already familiar
with, such as a favorite toy, game, or
story, you are helping them more fully
grasp the subject matter. Asking your
child questions such as “Why?” and
“How?” can also get them thinking on
their own. Researchers are continuing
to study how parents and children
interact with the hopes of discovering
how people can get the most out
of their visit to places like Omaha
Children’s Museum. While there are
always details to be learned, one thing
is clear: Omaha Children’s Museum is a
valuable place for parents and children
to learn and grow together!

NEW! Art Explosion – (Tuesday-Saturday 2-4 p.m.): From messy
art to science-based art, you never know what exciting projects will
be happening in our Creative Arts Center! It could be slime, shaving
cream, glue, ice cubes, glitter or something else fun. Whatever it
is, it will be messy good times for all. When you’re done, leave the
mess to us!
Carefree Kids – (Monday, August 16): This is a special event for
children whose immune systems have been compromised and
their families. We’ve worked with medical professionals to create
an environment that is clean, safe and “carefree” so families can
learn, play and enjoy time together. For this very special evening,

Clifford’s Big Idea of the Day – (Daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.):
Clifford has 10 Big Ideas that help kids navigate their world. Each
day, we’ll play games, listen to a story, or create art in the Clifford
exhibit and kids will learn ways to share, play fair, have respect, work
together, be responsible, be truthful, be kind, believe in yourself, be
a good friend and help others.
Clifford’s Birthday Breakfast – (June 26, July 10 and 24)
Celebrate Clifford’s birthday with a special breakfast party that kids

Clifford Meet & Greets – (Thursdays at 10:30, 11:30 a.m. and Saturdays
at 3:30 p.m.): Meet everyone’s favorite Big Red Dog! Parents, you’ll want
your camera for when your kids meet their favorite furry friend.
NEW! Club Wonder Why – (Tuesdays 9:30 (members) and 10:30
a.m.): Do you hear the word “why” a lot? This is the perfect first look
at science for preschoolers’ ages 3 to 5 and their adult partner. Each
Tuesday we will explore a different science question starting with “I
wonder why…?”
Costume Parade – (Fridays 1:45 p.m.): Join us as we showcase all
the fun costumes from our Friday Dress Up days. Everyone who joins
in can march and play instruments throughout the museum! Parents
get your cameras ready, this is a parade you won’t want to miss.
Daddy and Me – (Sunday June 20): Bring dad to the museum for
lots of fun play and activities including a Daddy & Me handprint
project to take home. Included with admission.
Great Friends to Kids Luncheon – (Monday, August 31):
This wonderful event brings together those who have worked
passionately to enhance the lives of metro-area children. In its
fourth year, this event will recognize individuals and organizations
who have worked diligently to make the Omaha metro area a

Dress-Up Days – (Fridays): Join the staff as we play dress-up! From
superheroes, to patriots and Dr. Seuss characters, your trip to the
museum is extra special when there’s extra pretending involved.

Milk the Moment Tour – (Friday, June 11): Visit the National Milk
Mustache Mobile Tour. Get your own milk mustache photo, play a
